Lionsgate Already Planning on Eighth 'Saw' Film

Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, writers of Saw IV-Saw VI are reportedly coming back for two more installments, which would lead the popular horror franchise all the way up to number eight. The news was disclosed via RiskyBizBlog announcing the writing duo's work on the new horror series Clive Barker's Hotel.

As usual, the continuing plot and storyline for all Saw sequels is being kept tightly under wraps. What is known is that Saw VII will be in 3D. Does that mean Saw VIII will be as well? I guess that depends on how popular the first 3D installment is.

Saw VII will haunt up theater screens on October 23rd of this year, with Saw VII hitting in 2010 and Saw VIII arriving in 2011.

Kate Beckinsale back for Underworld 4?

Less than a week ago it was announced that Screen Gems were working on Underworld 4. Apparently they are planning to film it in 3D, and they also intend for it to start a whole new trilogy. However, a few questions arose from this news. Firstly, which cast members would be returning? Would Rhona Mitra be carrying on from Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, or would Kate Beckinsale be returning to lead the franchise? Well according to Bloody-Disgusting Beckinsale may be back:

…we started doing some digging and have stumbled on to a pretty big discovery. Two sources have told Bloody Disgusting that Kate Beckinsale is in fact attached to return as the beautiful vampire warrior Selene, who made her first appearance in Len Wiseman’s film from 2003. What does this mean? It means Kate-Beckinsale-in-pleather-in-mother-effin’-3D, that’s what! Now, I should be clear that this should be taken strictly as rumor as we have not been able to get any official confirmation from people involved in the actual film, or studio for that matter.
A quick glance at Kate Beckinsale’s IMDB page shows that she hasn’t got any projects lined up, so that could increase the chances of her returning. However last October when asked if she would play Selene again she said:

“I feel like I’ve played that character enough times that I don’t think I’d be excited to play the same character again. It’s a weird experience. I’ve never done that before, you’re playing the same character in two movies, and after two, I feel like I’m kind of done with that.”
But if the script (and pay) is good then I guess she would find it hard to turn down.

Exclusive: A Look At The MACHETE Script!

So Robert Rodriguez got himself a crazy cast for his Machete movie. He got that crackhead Lindsay Lohan and he even scored himself Robert De Niro. Lohan and De Niro are gonna be in the same movie. It boggles the mind to even say that.

If there is an action script with Latinos in it, you bet your ass we are gonna take a look at it. It's almost a given.

Guest script reviewer ScriptShadow managed to take a peek at the 87 page Machete script and chimed in his thoughts below. Yes, it really is a super lean 87 pages. You can read his review .

Valkyrie's Christopher McQuarrie Writing the Wolverine Sequel

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Oscar winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, of The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun, and Valkyrie most recently, has been hired by Fox to write the next Wolverine movie. Hugh Jackman is set to return and will also produce along with Lauren Shuler Donner. The movie's story line will take its cue from the early 1980s Frank Miller / Chris Claremont mini-series, which is set in Japan and has Wolverine dealing with ninjas as he struggles whether to follow his animal killer instincts or a new life under a samurai's code of honor and respect.

Wolverine 2 has no scheduled release date.

Warner Brothers and DC Lose Certain Superman Rights

Warner Brothers and DC comics have lost a little bit of Superman, and could lose him completely come 2013. Judge Stephen Larson has given Superman's co-creator Jerry Siegel rights to additional works in the franchise, including the first two weeks of the daily Superman newspaper comic strip and early issues of both Action Comics and Superman comics. According to Variety, this means that the Siegel estate now owns the rights to all depictions of Superman's origins from the planet Krypton, his parents Jor-L and Lora, Superman as the infant Kal-L, and the launching of the infant Superman into space by his parents as Krypton explodes and his landing on Earth in a fiery crash.

What this means for Warner Brothers and DC Comics is that they've lost a little more control over certain aspects of the Superman character. DC still owns other important elements like Superman's ability to fly, the term kryptonite, the Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White characters, Superman's vision powers and expanded origins. The main point to this lawsuit is figuring out how much the Siegels are owed from profits WB and DC collected from Superman since 1999, when the heirs legally took back half of the Superman copyright.

In a statement, the two companies said, "Warner and DC Comics are pleased that the court has affirmed that the vast majority of key elements associated with the Superman character that were developed after Action Comics No. 1 are not part of the copyrights that the plaintiffs have recaptured and therefore remain solely owned by DC Comics." That is all well and good, but copyright law dictates that full ownership of Superman goes back to the Siegels in 2013. This will give the Siegels the chance to set up Superman pics, TV shows and other projects at another studio away from Warner Brothers.

In order to get a new Superman or even Justice League film featuring the superhero off the ground, Warner Brothers and DC will have to get the project into production by 2011.

Godzilla is Back!!

Bloody Disgusting reports that a new “Godzilla” picture is in the works. Legendary Pictures, the crowd behind superhero jaunts Watchmen and The Dark Knight, are reportedly behind the Jurassic creature’s Tinseltown resurgence. There's no other details at this stage.

The last time Hollywood tackled the Japanese Lizard things didn’t work out so well. 1998’s Godzilla, starring Matthew Broderick, and directed by Roland Emmerich, wasn’t just slammed by fans, it was a box office disappointment to boot.

Roy Billing Joins the Dawn Treader

New Zealand actor Roy Billing (TVs “Underbelly : A Tale of Two Cities”, “Charlie & Boots”) tells Moviehole that he’s off to Queensland on Monday to film a role in Fox’s The Chronicles of Narnia:Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

“I hop on a plane on Monday”, Billing says. “I’m playing Chief Dufflepud – a gnome-like creature who hops around on one leg. There’s a whole heap of [Dufflepuds]. It should take a week or so to film my scene”.

Billing says the first thing he has to do when he arrives is get fitted for his prosthetics.

The Dufflepuds are a curious group of [one-legged] creatures that Eustace, Lucy and their companions come upon in their adventures. Though not intelligent, they have the power of invisibility.

Of the local actors involved in the directed sequel, Gary Sweet (“Macbeth”) has the biggest role, says Billing.

“Gary has quite a big role – he’s playing a Sea Captain. He’s probably in a half to three quarters of the movie”.

Though he’s been working in the industry for 30 years, this is Billing’s first time doing a big Hollywood production. He didn’t need to think twice when asked to come onboard.

“The first Narnia movies were a big success, and I’m sure this will be too – with all the special effects and so on. It should be good”.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third in the epic series of films based on the bestselling books by C.S. Lewis, began principal photography on location in Queensland, in July.

Predators Start Date Announced

A couple of months ago it was announced that a director had been found for the upcoming Predators reboot/sequel in the form of Nimrod Antal. The Vacancy director was just one of many that was in the running to direct the highly sought-after project, with another notable naming being The Descent helmer, Neil Marshall (who I, and many other fans, strongly favored).

With Robert Rodriguez on-board to produce (he was also rumored to be directing)at one point, Antal on-board to direct, and Alex Litvak and Michael Finch having written it, it looks like Predators is definitely on the way. And now Production Weekly<&callback=load_tweet">/a> is reporting a shooting start date (and location) for the film: September 28th, 2009 at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Predators is being said to be about a “very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors - that are not always from outside their group.” Sounds like it’s putting a new spin on the franchise but at the same time keeping the spirit of the original - I’m sure fans will agree that’s a good thing.

As stated, Predators is (apparently) to start filming on September 28th, 2009, and is slated for a release on July 7th, 2010.

Sony Hires Spider-Man 5 & 6 Writer

Variety reports that Sony Pictures has engaged screenwriter James Vanderbilt to write Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.

Production on Spider-Man 4 will begin early next year for a May 6, 2011 release. Vanderbilt wrote the first draft of the script for the fourth installment. David Lindsay-Abaire was brought on board to do a rewrite, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script.

The trade adds that director Sam Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but executives at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline.

It's unclear whether Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will be back for 5 & 6, but if they aren't, Vanderbilt's script would be the blueprint for a franchise reboot.

Little Fockers Starts Casting

Even though screenwriter/director John Hamburg didn't have much he could say about the comedy threequel Little Fockers, including whether it might start shooting soon, director Paul Weitz and Universal are certainly moving full steam ahead it seems.

The blog Spoiler TV has gotten their hands on a casting call that includes five auxiliary characters for the movie, most of them with only a few lines, and a description of some of the things that take place in the movie involving them.

The "Henry" mentioned might be one of the twins had by Ben Stiller's Greg Focker with Teri Polo's Pam, and the fact they're casting a Russian girlfriend for Owen Wilson's Kevin confirms that he is indeed coming back as previously reported. There's also a medical conference and one of the characters they're casting will be getting an enema. Fun!

You can read the full descriptions below:

[TOUGH KID] 7 yrs old, he teases Henry for peeing his pants, gets in Greg’s face when he threatens him…2 lines, 1 scene

[[RUFUS] Tough 5 yr old who takes Henry’s tricycle, runs him over, but then gets knocked off the bike by Samantha…1 line, 1 scene NEED LEGAL 6 TO PLAY 5 YRS OLD

Straw Dogs Remake Gets Started, Adds Cast

In a new take on the original Sam Peckinpah fim, James Marsden stars as a Hollywood screenwriter who moves with his wife (Kate Bosworth) to her hometown in Mississippi, where he clashes with the local residents who don't want anything to do with his Yankee ways.

Now Variety is reporting that the production is finally getting started in Shreveport, Louisiana, and three new cast members have been added. James Woods, Dominic Purcell and Willa Holland will all contribute their talents, though the article doesn't specify what roles they'll play.

Straw Dogs is set to be released February 25, 2011.

David Goyer Talks Blade 4

MTV News spoke with David Goyer, writer of The Dark Knight, and he revealed that there’s been talk of the next Blade film at New Line Cinema, confirming that “there’s been murmurings” about the next Blade feature film project.

He didn’t specify any details, so the talk is likely about the Deacon Frost-centered movies we heard about earlier.

The other option is to re-cast but since this is within continuity and focused on Frost, that wouldn’t be necessary or a good idea. Although Snipes’ recent years have been riddled with legal issues and behind-the-scenes problems, I still would enjoy watching him convert vampires to ash. Maybe he could cameo in the next Twilight film…

Goyer had this to say about the current state of the franchise:

“I think when you revisit these characters, the question is, how long should they stay off the shelf?… When we did ‘Batman Begins,’ he’d been off the shelf for about eight years. It hasn’t been eight years yet for Blade. I think usually if you give them a little breathing room between iterations, it’s better.”
Distancing themselves from the last remnants of the Blade franchise as it was would be wise. Blade: Trinity was not well received, nor was the short-lived Blade television series on Spike TV that Goyer helped produce and write the pilot for.

Iron Man 2 Prequel Comic To Introduce Movie Whiplash

Jon Favreau loves to take chances when it comes to the Iron Man movies. First he cast a forty-something Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark (brilliant!) and now for Iron Man 2 he’s decided to highlight what even fans of the long-running comic book would call a cheesy, second-tier villain: Whiplash.

Basically Whiplash is an ex-con who figures out how to build a suit that uses electrically-charged whips as a weapon. And yes, at one point in the comics he did look like he was into bondage with a black leather costume replete with a zippered mouth.

But for Iron Man 2, Favreau has decided to change the character and make him Russian, combining Whiplash (who will be played by Mickey Rourke) with another armored villain known as the Crimson Dynamo. To help familiarize fans with this amalgam of a character, Marvel will be putting out a four part comic book miniseries that will introduce Ivan Vanko (Whiplash’s real name) and what leads up to his hatred and need for revenge against Tony Stark.

Iron Man vs. Whiplash will premiere in November of this year and will be written by Brannon Braga (long time Star Trek scribe and currently working on the hit Fox TV series 24) and Marc Guggenheim. Here’s the official description of the series:

Before he strikes in Iron Man 2, meet the all-new, all-different, all-deadly Whiplash in this special in-continuity adventure! Who is Anton Vanko and why does he blame Tony Stark for the murder of thousands? For that matter, why does the United Nations? Brannon Braga (TV’s “24″) and Marc Guggenheim (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and artist Phil Briones (SUB-MARINER: REVOLUTION) have the answers!

Iron Man 2 opens on May 7, 2010.

Smurfs Movie Will Be Set in the Real World

The live action Smurfs movie has started casting and they aren’t looking for little blue people. Odds are the Smurfs will be CGI or something, but the movie will contain humans. In the Smurfs cartoons the only human involved was the evil wizard Gargamel, but for the live action movie it looks like they’re going a different direction. Specifically, they’re casting kids.

Backstage has a casting notice posted by Sony Pictures Animation in which they describe two specific roles they’re looking to fill. Here’s what Sony’s looking for:

Sophie: ages 8-10, a girl of great imagination and originality, though always appealing, she is often socially awkward and doesn't fit in with the other kids, she's smart and open, though she can be physically clumsy, when she discovers that the "doll" her father brought home from Belgium is actually a living, breathing Smurf, she takes "Clumsy" in as a member of the family and tries to get the household to embrace him and the rest of the Smurfs.

Sam: 13-16 (to play 14-15), Sophie's brother, a good kid, but he's going through that phase where he can be difficult and withdrawn and retreat to his room to play video games, through his involvement in the Smurfs' quest to get home, he reconnects with his parents and sister.

So if you’re hoping for a magical movie set in a remote, fantasy village full of Smurfs under assault from an evil wizard, forget it. It looks like they’re taking the Smurfs out of their fantasy environment and turning them into Alvin and the Chipmunks. Instead of mushroom huts hidden in the weeds, they’re plopping them down in the real world where they’ll hang out with awkward kids and video game obsessed teenagers.
