I've seen one other film directed by Bernhard Wicki, which was The Bridge (1959). It was excellent. I have also seen The Longest Day, which he directed some sequences for.

Initially, this film was first announced as a starring vehicle for Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. At one point, William Holden wanted the lead male role, but Anthony Quinn bought the rights and took the role.

This was based on a play and apparently there were some significant changes, including the ending:
WARNING: spoilers below
In the play, the Serge character (who had a different name) was killed by the townspeople. In the film, Karla stops them before they execute him.

I thought this was an interesting idea and I liked seeing Ingrid Bergman play a different type of role. Some juicy dialogue and dramatic moments. It's a 7/10 from me.
