Star Trek...A Journey with TOS, TNG, DSN, VOY, ENT

Tools

Wow. That was an interesting video! I never knew any of that stuff.
(Very sad, though. I didn't even know he had died).

Not that I really remember Michael O'Hare's acting, but looks-wise, he reminded me of Scott Bakula (Captain Archer from Enterprise).

R.l.P.
They do resemble a bit indeed ! Remember seeing Scott in Quantum Leap... that was a famous one.
Enterprise got a bit more into the Vulcan culture also evidencing the Human - Vulcan relationship.
Even though they were a close ally to the humans, their Vulcan High Command was pretty secretive and they used to hide many things from the humans

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

I finished the first leg of my Star Trek journey by watching all 79 episodes of the original series plus the pilot, The Cage. This is the umpteenth time I've seen these but it had been over 10 years since I last watched them. I wasn't sure if my fond memories of STTOS would remain intact...they did! I loved re-watching the show and even though I knew the episodes by heart I found new things in each episode to be fascinated by. I'd list my favorite episodes and least favorite too, but it would be hard! I like them all, even though I'll be the first to admit there were a few episodes that were poorly written.

I also wanted to count the number of 'space babes' Captain Kirk kissed. We always hear he had a girl on every episode but I don't think he kissed all that many, but I forgot to count...anybody know the exact number?

I do know the exact number of times it's eluded too that Kirk had sex. Most of those times were in the line of duty, seriously or he was under some alien influence. There was only one time Kirk had sex for the sheer fun of it. Anyone know which episodes?

Trouble with a capitial 'T'
I don't know, but I'd love to find out how many non-human (aliens or androids) he slept with.
From a production stand point, as opposed to in-universe, Captain Kirk is eluded to having sexual relations during the episodes five times by my count. Here's one.

Miramanee from The Paradise Syndrome, also that's 1 space babe he kissed.

Question: was Miramanee human? I seem to recall some reference in the episode that the people on that planet may have (somehow) been directly descendent from Native Americans from Earth (but I could be wrong).

Ohh, good call! I almost said he never had sex with humans (as eluded too during the run time of the episodes, that is). But you're right Miramanee was human and her tribe had been brought to that peaceful planet by advanced aliens. So that's the one an only human he slept with, but it was honorable he did marry her first!

...And she got pregnant!
That means David Marcus (Wrath of Khan) had a half-sibling he never knew.

How sad, I just realized that after ST-III both of Kirk's only known children had died.

But then, with Kirk, who knows how man Kirk siblings might be out there.

I'd give her a HA! and a HI-YA! Then I'd kick her.

It's always interesting to see this kind of casting information because it gives you an idea of how different the show could have been. (Not necessarily better or worse, just different.)

Yaphet Kotto would've been more Sisko than Sisko.

Wow! Just catching up with this thread. How far are you now? I once had the same ambition ... until I saw there are close to 900 live-action episodes alone!

I finished ST original series for the upteenth time, finished Next Generation which I've a number of times, currently on season 5 of ST Deep Space Nine I believe this is my fourth time watching it. I usually watch one a night after I finished watching the nightly movie. Oh then I watch some lighter fare and currently am watching Hogan's Heroes which I've never seen before.

That sets me off on a nostalgia binge for sure. I grew up on 60s TV. Comedies to name just a few: Get Smart, The Flintstones, Gilligan's Island, The Jetsons, My Favorite Martian, Hogan's Heroes, F Troop, McHale's Navy. Dozens more actually.

Ah, but dramas left the most lasting impressions. Such as: The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents (I can still remember the theme music), The Prisoner (gotta track that down again), The Invaders (also want to revisit sometime; scared the bejesus outta me), Star Trek of course, Combat! (still seems very authentic and memorable), Rat Patrol, The Avengers, The Outer Limits, The Wild Wild West, Dark Shadows (parents hated it, so only now and then), Smothers Brothers, Mission Impossible, Night Gallery, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Man from Uncle, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir, The Big Valley, Batman, The Saint, The Time Tunnel. I had to do some Googling for a memory aid ... and left out many more than including here. Wonder when we had the time to watch them all!

I might, just maybe watch Strange New Worlds when I get done rewatching all the older Star Trek shows.

Oh so many great TV show there! I want to watch them all! I was born in the early 60s and watched many of those shows in reruns in the early 70s, though I haven't seen them all. The wife and I started a TV nostalgia kick about 15 years ago by watching an entire run of old TV series. First we watched one of my all time favorite sitcoms Lavern & Shirley, then Happy Days that ran for 11 seasons the last season most of the original cast was gone. Then for some reason I decided to watch Joanie Loves Chachi which was OK and only 2 seasons. Then Mary Tyler Moore show, followed by, you guess it, Rhoda. The original Outer Limits and Twilight Zone. Then Gilligan's Island followed by Batman which I hadn't seen since the late 60s and thought it would be silly but it was good fun. Then The Time Tunnel. And what might be my favorite TV show The Love Boat, followed by, yes, Fantasy Island (the original not one of the reboots). M*A*S*H* and all the episodes of Family Feud game show with Richard Dawson as host.

Probably the biggest binge watch I did was watching in order all of the surviving 757 episodes of What's My Line? which was fascinating to watch for the history alone. After I'm done with Hogan's Hero's I'm not sure what vintage TV show I'll be up for next?

Off topic, but have you ever seen the film Auto Focus (2002)?

It was a movie about Bob Crane's life & death. I kept hoping the film would delve into how Hogan's Heroes was pitched & developed (how do you pitch a "Nazi sit-com" to America 20 years after the war?) Sadly, beyond just a mention, there was little focus (no pun intended) on Hogan's Heroes. The movie was mostly about Crane's sex addiction and weird relationship with John Carpenter (not the famous director).

Hey Cap, I've heard of that title but no I haven't watched it. Looking at the film's description makes me think my wife would hate it, so nix that movie I did watch some interesting special features on the Hogan's Heroes DVDs. There was an interview with Bob Crane's widow Sigrid Valdis which is the name she went by as an actress, but she introduced herself on the DVD as Patricia Crane. According to her the show was in deep trouble from critics mad that Hogan's Heroes was seemingly making light of the POWs that had been held in German camps as the show made the Nazis look too benevolent. So reportedly they changed the format in the second season and made the Nazis more deadly dangerous while keeping the comedy.

There was an interview with Bob Crane's widow Sigrid Valdis which is the name she went by as an actress, but she introduced herself on the DVD as Patricia Crane. According to her the show was in deep trouble from critics mad that Hogan's Heroes was seemingly making light of POW held in a German camp with funny Nazis. So reportedly they changed the format in the second season and made the Nazis more deadly dangerous while keeping the comedy. As selling point to the critics the show's PR people pointed out that many of the cast members were themselves Jewish and Robert Clary who played a French POW was actually in a German concentration camp, half of his family died in the concentration camp...and so the cast and show was poking fun at the Nazis and having the last laugh at them.
Interesting. I did know about Robert Clary. Also I read an interview with Verner Klemperer (Colonel Klink) asking why he, as a German Jew who escaped the war, would play Nazis in movies & on TV. He responded that he'd take any role as a Nazi in order to mock & disparage them.

You're right, your wife probably would not like Auto Focus - it's an uncomfortable film about a disturbing subject especially since Bob Crane seemed like such a nice average guy (he was also a drummer). It does have some interesting performances by Greg Kinnear and Willem DaFoe as the main characters, though.

There was one part in the film where the actor playing Richard Dawson gives Crane advice. It's made clear the two didn't really like each other while making Hogan's Heroes, but the advice Dawson gives is for Crane to not keep so much porn laying around in his car and trailer. Dawson ended up being right as Crane's porn addiction did ultimately end up hurting his career (and possibly even cost him his life).
