Movies that should be remade.

Have no desire to see The Princess Bride remade but I do like the idea of a female reboot of Revenge of the Nerds
I wonder how that would turn out, given that the female remake of Ghostbusters didn't do well at the box office, and that it was controversial with fans to the point that, to my knowledge, the next Ghostbusters film treated that movie as if it never happened.

Love this, I thought Day Of The Triffids was aces and should be a much more well-known film.
BBC did a remake that was great for about the first 30 minutes (it's on YouTube).

A modern remake could only hope to make it as genuinely creepy and disturbing as that 1980s series.
The thing is, it has various time jumps that also makes it feel like a series so I guess a film story would use a shorter time span.
But like I said, that atmospheric horror practically doesn't exist anymore.

Not sure if it would count as a remake, but I'd like to see someone take another crack at a Watchmen adaptation. I am not a fan of Zack Snyder's take: I found it impersonal, low on creativity, and he kept wanting to turn it into an action movie even though the book tells more of a noir/murder mystery story. At least we have the HBO sequel series, which I loved.

Victim of The Night
well they messed up snow white that shouldnt of remade in the first place
I'm shocked.

Too soon. Too much super-hero stuff out there now. We have serious saviors, sarcastic quippers, anti-heroic avenging angels, villainous demi-gods, postmodern capes, hopeful hipsters. Watchmen (the comic) worked, in part, because it was a surprise. The approach was a surprise. The mystery had surprises. The ending was a surprise. Now we have various cuts of the movie, a live action TV version (which was horrible, IMO), cartoons, and Heaven knows how many comic-books and tie-ins.

Out of curiosity, what was wrong with it? I'm aware that it has a terrible IMDB score, but I've heard mixed opinions on it.

That score was decided a long time ago. Pure internet revenge.

I'm not saying that this remake is good, but SO much worse than the other bad remakes?
Worse than Maleficent? I find that hard to believe.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but there was a lot of controversy before it was even released because Disney cast a Latina actress as Snow White, and used CGI instead of hiring little person actors as the dwarfs.

Why is it that the only movies that get remade are the movies that rocked when the first came out? The films that really could have benefitted from being remade never get noticed,in that sense.
I think it's rare they will remake a movie which did badly to begin with.

So basically racist whining?

I've only read a few reviews, but people who have seen the movie seem to like Rachel Zegler's performance as Snow White.

I think most people are more upset about the CGI dwarfs.

Right, the original was never about the character's race, and the actress in the remake had fair skin. So maybe some racist will whine about it, but I don't care.

People complained about Hugh Jackman being cast as Wolverine because he was an unknown actor who was too tall for the character. People complained about Heath Ledger being cast as The Joker because he was too young and too good-looking.

They both proved everyone was wrong to prejudge them.

I've never understood why so many people complain about casting before they've even seen the movie.

It's a European fairy tale. The character is considered beautiful, in large part, because she has snow white skin. The story is no more about her race, I suppose, than Jackie Brown is a story about an African American woman, but Snow White is a white character. We could remake Jackie Brown and shrug when viewers objected to Anya Taylor Joy playing the titular role. But the people objecting, by logical necessity, would not be "racist" for objecting, although we might disagree with the objection.

I'm thinking of proverbial racist trolls on social media loudly voicing their opinion, and making the main issue with the film the race and perceived "wokeness" of the character, when there are probably bigger problems with the film. I've had it up to here with people whining about "wokeness", and in my opinion, the individuals doing that have become the new "SJWs". I run into them on social media today a lot more than I do some "woke person" irrationally whining about "racism, sexism, homophobia", and so on.

My recollection is that some racists objected to the Disney Star Wars films featuring a black Stormtrooper, for example. (Even though the series had always included non-white characters, not to mention a diversity of alien species). As another example, some people whined that a Wolfenstein game remake was "racist against white people" because it involved "killing Nazis" - in a series which had always been about killing Nazis in WWII.

I'm not saying that everyone who objects to the casting is automatically a racist, but the character has fair skin (I would have had to look the actress' bio up on Wikipedia to know that she was Hispanic), and IMO, fairy tales like Snow White aren't strongly about the race of the characters. They're just meant to be simple stories relatable to children and adults.

If we want to judge remakes/adaptations by whether they were fully faithful to the original text, prepare to be disappointed by most of them since artistic liberties are incredibly common and run through almost all of them to different degrees. Even with Snow White, Mirror Mirror portrayed the seven dwarves as thieves, which was 100% unfaithful to the original story, but that film didn't get the same controversy that the recent film is getting.

In my opinion, using CGI dwarves is far more egregious than casting Zegler as Snow White.

make my day

this should be
