Does anyone buy tickets at the theater anymore?

Yeah, people have definitely hurt the experience (sorry Sean Baker, but I'll go to the theater if you can find a way to stop all the noisy, rude idiots from going too).

it's a crap shoot, do I get a respectful audience and have a grand time, or do I get the worse of the worse and have to leave and get a refund?

There are movies where a big screen viewing is a transformative experience, with the perfect print (or whatever you call them these days) and a great sound system. 2001 A Space Odessey or Godzilla Minus One in the IMAX was eye popping astonishing, I was so happy seeing those - so I still take my chances. But no, I don't go as much as I used to. Juror #2 I did because it was important to me seeing it in a theater, but most others I'm perfectly fine watching at home.

But reading through this, and I'm surprised to see so many who bypass the online ordering thing, I thought I was a rare bird.
I feel very lucky that there's a theater in my town that people go to just to watch movies. People don't talk, they don't use their phones, there's never an issue. Been going to this theater for a decade and I won't even say I could count on one hand the number of rude people I've seen in the theater because I could count on no hands. If that changes I'll stop going because that's what drove me away from theaters in the first people. Ordinary f*cking people. I hate 'em.

The Guy Who Sees Movies
It's been a long time since I bought them on line or in advance. So far, since the beginning of the plague era, no movie I've wanted to see was close to a sold out theater (I do go to the theater), so, I can make a last minute choice, say hello to the person in the sales booth and get my ticket torn in the time-tested manner. Sometimes, I even buy popcorn.

Yeah, I have several of them in my town. In one case, the owner used to walk to the front of the room and give a lecture on NOT using phones during the movie. We don't get the lecture any more, but the audiences seem to be better behaved in general.

I never pre-order and always buy tickets in person.

The theaters I usually go to (when I go, which is much less often these days) are never super crowded, and I usually go to matinee showings. I show up 15 minutes after the official "start" time to skip the majority of the preshow padding and still have plenty of good seats to choose from.

I also rarely (if ever ) go to a movie the week that it opens.
