I know next to nothing about russian cinema. I have seen three films by Tarkovsky and they were all brilliant. Solaris, The Mirror and Stalker. They all made a deep impression on me when I saw them and they have a unique feel over them that I have never seen in any other movie. Especially The Mirror is so beautiful to watch that I can't even find words. Utterly incomprehensible, but breathtakingly beautiful.

now they were out - they were wild with freedom. They weren't thinking about the slavery of poverty. Or the slavery of welfare and food stamps. The rest of us would be all right until the poor learned how to make atom bombs in their basements.

Check out Nostalghia if you liked Tarkovsky's other work.
It's more like a painting then a movie.

My favorite Russian movie is Andrei Rublev, I could have done without the animal cruelty in the film.

Others I've seen,
Stalker
Solaris
Ivan The Terrible Parts One And Two
Alexander Nevsky
Battleship Potemkin
Strike
The Man With A Movie Camera
Dersu Uzala
Brother
The End of St. Petersburg
The Thief
Earth
Chess Fever

I'm sure I'm missing some.

Im confused by the question. All of them have english subtitles.
On the left is original Russian title and on the right - english title.
If you are asking what above mentioned movies are about,
check my site for descriptions.

Here's some really good movies from last few years:
Прогулка / The Stroll
Бедный, бедный Павел / Poor Poor Pavel
Дневник камикадзе / Kamikazee’s Diary
Кармен / Carmen
Идиот / The Idiot (mini-series)
Карлик Нос / Karlik Nos
Отец и сын / Father and Son
Старухи / Old Women
Война / War
Звезда / The Star
Кукушка / Cuckoo
Любовник / The Lover
Русский Ковчег / Russian Ark
I have created a page listing Russian films released in 2003, because of such discussions:
http://www.geocities.com/rusatg/2003.htm

Has anyone seen Ночной дозор / Night Watch?
It has surpassed Spiderman 2 in Russian movie theaters.
It's a bit like Matrix with Horror twist.

I've been trying to find it for quite a while now, it's kind of hard since I'm in Canada. Is it worth the search? I hear it was very original and creative, I'd like to hear feedback from people who've actually seen it. Thanks in advance!

Sorry man, I hadn't heard of it until just now. Even in my Foreign/Indy friendly city, we don't get much Russian cinema.

I just saw Night Watch. It's a pretty awesome movie, although I still think it was really confusing. Can't wait for Day Watch!

"I can't help it..."
Russkij Kovcheg (Russian Ark) is well worth a look

I saw that on DVD a couple of months ago. Not much of a standard "storyline", but man, was it ever impressive to watch.

Well, that is what my site is for. Netflix has some good Russian movies, I keep up complete list (theirs is a bit inaccurate).

Question for those who've seen both Tarkovsky & Soderberg's versions of Solaris, which did you like more and why?
I prefer the Russian version, of cause the book is even better, but Clooney's effort is pretty good too.

Sigh... the only Russian film that I have seen would be "Russian Ark" of 2003. It's sort of a documentary, and was filmed entirely in a single day. Yet preparations and sequencing took *months* to plan.

Lilja 4-ever was insightful, in a Russian kinda way.
