Creepiest Movie Scores

Tools

With October approaching and the subsequent Horror season, no better time to discuss and share some movie scores that are creepy and set a very eerie, ominous mood. Which can you think of?

Mutation from the Akira OST leaps to mind right away. Just listen to it; it's very dark and sinister-sounding and the chanting in the background makes it all the more unsettling. Always set a creepy mood for me.

There are a few that spring to mind for me such as Halloween and Scream but the one that has had the biggest effect on me and makes me skin chill the most is from Saw:

I just love the usage of strings, electronics and over all feeling of impending doom that is used in it. I just cannot imagine the final scene in Saw working without this being overlaid to impose upon the ultimate demise of the victims.

Lord High Filmquisitor
Great call on Suspiria. I never found that film proper all that engrossing, but I will watch it ad nauseum just for the score.

Really, any score by Goblin is awesome. A close second to Suspiria in that regard is Deep Red.

Other creepy soundtracks that come to mind are Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Exorcist.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
I had forgotten how the theme went for this but now I listen to it is quite creepy but to be honest the thing about Nightmare that did it most for me was the mantra but the school children that was used:

It's just horrible.

The Witch did have a good score. The approach reminded me a bit of Under the Skin.

insidious chapter 1, such a weird and scary score.

The Bib-iest of Nickels
Not films, but I really liked the scores for the Hannibal tv series and Dexter.

Welcome to the human race...
I'll throw in a mention for Hateful Eight. When I heard the main theme for the first time it really did make me wonder just what the hell I'd signed up for by watching it.

This might just do nobody any good.
Okay, so, it's not a part of the score but the most effective use music for unsettling effect, at least for me, is Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man in Zodiac (2007).

I'd say it's just as effective as Morricone's work on The Thing, Mica Levi's in Under the Skin, etc.
