Trouble with a capitial 'T'
Have you seen Batman (1943)? I never heard of it before but I knew that Orson Welles had plans to do a Batman film with him in the lead role. Too bad, it never got made, it could have been one of Orson's greats and saved him from selling frozen peas latter in life.

I keep reading tells of Orson actually filming The Bat-Man film in 1946, but apparently this is a lark? I can't find any batman movies from the 40s.

Hey Rules. I actually owned one of the Batman serials on VHS. (I don't remember if it was the first or second serial). There were two serials: 1. "Batman" (1943) and 2. "Batman and Robin" (1949). I think you can find both on YouTube. They had different casts, awful costumes, and weren't anything to write home about.

The rumors about Orson sound familiar, but I have no information beyond hearing the rumor that he had plans.

Aside from the '43 & '49 serials, Batman was not seen on film in any form again until the 1966 TV series.

In the late 90's a musician named Jim Steinman (known mostly for his work with Meatloaf) planned to do a Batman Broadway musical, but the project fell through.

And that reminds me of this (a guy who puts lyrics to movie theme music - here he sets Batman's story to the music by Danny Elfman made for the 1989 Batman film)...

I think the Captain Marvel series is in the public domain. I was able to download from what appeared to be a legit public domain site, maybe that is available to.

Yes! Excellent film based on a comic book (and a lot of people don't realize it's based on a comic.)
Never read the book myself. But the movie stars Tom Hanks and Paul Newman (I believe this was Paul's last film before he passed.)

Rumor mill has it that George Miller is in talks for the Man of Steel sequel.

Makes sense, this guy already put all that work into a JL movie.

Anyone here like Mystery Men (1999)?
According to IMDB, a lot of people just hate it.
I never read the comic, but I think the movie is funny (if you're in the mood for something very silly).

To wit:
[Mr. Furious trying to balance a hammer on his head]
Mr. Furious: Why am I doing this, again?
The Sphinx: When you can balance a tack hammer on your head, you will head off your foes with a balanced attack.
Mr. Furious: And why am I wearing the watermelon on my feet?
The Sphinx: [looks at the watermelon on Mr. Furious' feet] I don't remember telling you to do that.

I remember seeing it, but it didn't make an impression.

And what about the Daredevil movie ?

I'm upset that they are rebooting the Fantastic Four (FF) movies. The FF movies were like reading the comic the way the Human Torch and the Thing went at it. I'm a comic book collector since 1973
Agree with you - the 2000s FF movies really don't seem that bad anymore compared to this year's travesty.

Check this thread out. If you like comic book films.

Edit - Sorry every photo is of a cat...apparently.

The list needs to be updated.

I'm probably in the minority here, but my favorite superhero movie is still the 1978 version of Superman starring Christopher Reeve. Superman II was great too, but they should have stopped before making the third movie.

I also love The Avengers and the first Iron Man movie, and I'm one of the few people who liked the Fantastic Four movies.
I agree with you. Superman was very interesting until he put on the panties. But then it was replaced by a comedy. A great one!

I also love Darkman, especially some scenes. Raimi has a unique style. Like when they throw Paulie out the window-'well, Paulie, have a happy flight' and then he crashes on a car and a woman sees it and starts screaming and turns around and sees him again! Smiling. And then his face starts to fall appart. Surreal.

Am I wrong or The Avengers have a not-so outstanding plot? But still a decent one? Great action, though. Don't get me wrong, I like it. I like Fantastic four also.

It's like a cheeseburger. Not the greatest, but appeals to the masses.

I'm trying to remember The Avengers plot. Wasn't it; Loki brings an army of aliens to Earth with some kind of dimensional portal (the thing everyone's after in the other Marvel films - kind of the movie version of the Cosmic Cube?) and the Avengers fight them? With that many characters you kind of have to keep the plots simple.

Donner's Superman (1978) had 3 distinct acts - the first was a dramatic sci-fi movie (Krypton), the second was a coming of age in the American heartland & beginning of the classic "hero's journey" sequence, and the last act was a superhero adventure film.

I think so, yes...and sorry, but I just don't know what's Cosmic cube. and then some sort of a slimy gigantic worm terrorises the city and in the end Ironman takes some sort of bomb to explode in the other dimension

I agree. The 1st act was what captured me. And the music ...

I must say I LOVE Gene ...

In Marvel Comics, the Cosmic Cube was an artificially created object that granted its wielder near omnipotent power - turning any wish into reality (of course, one must always be careful what they wish for).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_Cube

In the Marvel film universe, the Cube is apparently referred to as both "the Cube" and "the Tesseract."

Just KISS and call it the All Spark. Fun to do in a room full of Marvel nuts.

I know that's not what you were referring to...
but KISS and Marvel Comics and "Comic Book Movies" (even made-for-TV ones)?
(Perfect together?)

For me the best Comic book films are:

Superman The Movie - the original and best comic book film. Love the three act structure to the film which each have their own styles, the only down side is the ending is a little weak as you can tell it is a larger film that has been cut in half, the other half been Superman II which was mostly filmed at the same time.

Superman II - A great sequel that ups the bad guys and continues the story and development of the main characters. Bot cuts of the film are worth a view to. Watched this one to death as a kid.

Batman - This is all about Jack to be honest who seals the film in every way. Its a tight film from start to finish. Some great lines also - "Where does he get those wonderful toys" "We've been ratted out boys" "I'm Batman". This is the most un Tim Burton film you will find, looks like he had to rein in the goth and weird stuff as he might have been under too much pressure from the studio, he did let it all loose though on Batman Returns which is why the film never really feels like a Batman film and more a Burton film about the bad guys.

X-Men 2 - The first comic book film in my eyes to really take the themes and characters of the actual comic and make a great film out of. It has great action scenes and loads of character development. This is when Hollywood woke up to the idea that comic book films have the potential to be very good films and make lots of money.

Spiderman - Have been a Spiderman fan for many a year and was hoping this would be a great film, i didn't need to worry because Rami nailed it. The only weak link in the film is the actual bad guy who is a little bland.

Spiderman 2 - This is everything the first film is and more, the action and the effects are better, the story is better and the bad guy has more depth. Its much like The Empire Strikes Back of comic book films in that it gets straight into the action with nothing to setup and ends with lots of open threads for a sequel to wrap up. Love it

V for Vendetta - The first real adult comic book film for me and just showed that it didn;t have to be about superhero's for them to work on the big screen.

Batman Begins - At last we got a Batman origin story and a great one at that. Loved the layered story that Nolan uses to split the film up. And the realistic approach was a breath of fresh air. Only slightly let down but the other the top action sequence final act.

The Dark Knight - The best and last great comic book film. It will be a long time before this film is beaten. Its just agreat film and to boot it has Batman in it. It could be a film without Batman in and it would still be great. The realistic approach is fully used here and is all the better for it. And The Joker is just amazing.

As for the MCU i enjoyed phase 1 and most of phase 2 but i have to admit Age of Ultron has left me with fatigue to be honest. There was just to much going on and no real direction of where it was all going. It felt to much of a set-up for all the other films to come and had no real great story of its own to tell. I understand what Marvel is trying to do and kudos to them so far for creating such a great world over all the films but i think they are starting to think of to many films ahead. Phase 1 and 2 were so good because we got to see are fav characters up on the screen for the first time and then get together for a big fight in The Avengers. Unfortunately that new factor has worn off now so they are trying to replace it with loads of characters and big story arks with lots of films feeding into each other. I don't think its working to be honest and hope they slow down because they are building themselves up for a big fall.

And then we have DC which is playing catch up to what Marvel have done. I will reserve judgement on them until after Suicide Squad and Batman Vs Superman, but to be honest both films look very far from the greats of The Dark Knight and Superman the Movie. I understand they are going for a fresh take as you can;t do the same thing over and over but i just don't like the look of it all so far, and hey i enjoyed Man of Steel, but i wish they had made a direct sequel to that and then created a spin of into Justice League.

Maybe i'm getting old or maybe their are just to many comic book films at the moment but i long for the days of original Summer Blockbusters that are not Sequels, Reboots or Comic book films, but the studios have to make money!!!!!!!
