The Mad Prophet of the Movie Forums
Owning Mahowny-(1st time) Not very exciting, but very watchable. Great performance from Hoffman. I imagine this would make a wonderful double feature with Scorsese's Casino.
The Cat in the Hat-(1st time) I saw this to appease my family, and to be a filler for time before I saw The Human Stain. It wasn't as completely horrible as most are saying, and there were a few scenes that were VERY funny (well..one scene). But, in the end, this was a sadly overdone movie that falls on its face most of the time.
The Human Stain-(1st time) I've been wanting to see this for a VERY long time. I loved it. Anthony's best film since the brilliant Titus. Very tragic...the best movie ever made dealing with race. If you want to see a movie about racial identity and prejudice, as well as how reverse-rascist our society is becoming, see this movie. (I liked this more than I liked Do the Right Thing, although I can't exactly place why). A great movie...great performances...haunting...one of the years best movies.
City of Ghosts-(1st time) I really liked this one too. For some reason, it kept reminding me of The Quiet American (which is a much superior film), but that is mainly due to my love for the movie. In the end, I liked all of the characters, (this movie had some great characterizations), and I found the title to be very appropriate. For whatever reason, this film maintains a very supernatural feel, despite the fact that nothing deals with the supernatural.

It Could Happen To You ~B~
Nicholas Cage in one of his better roles. A delightful tale that makes it possible to believe someone is prepared to stick to a promise regardless of what loss it means to them. Let down by the annoyance that is Rosie Perez. What was required was a vapid, selfish b***h of a wife, not a ten words a second, screetchy pain in the arse. I hated her character but not quite in the way that I expect the film wanted. Everything else was a joy.

**The Majestic**
A film starring Jim Carrey that I wasn't really aware of before has turned out to be a little gem. Popular and income rich films rarely have this depth. Such a shame that the masses miss out on such films as these for some of the more popular tripe. Not to say this is a perfect film though.
Carrey has a wonderful performance here, an entirely serious role that works. The Truman Show was a great film but his serious acting here out-weighs that performance. An emotional film of many facets that I'm ashamed to have missed before.

Patlabor 2 ~C~
Yawn. I have seen this before but long ago. However I just found out why it was so long ago. The first film kept me enthralled, the caharcetrs (bglfjkkfyrrur, EDIT: characters) well-rounded but this, it drones through the majority of the movie. The animation is on par with the first but the action is at the bearest minimum. Not a good film to watch if you haven't seen the first, characters established in that just appear out of nowhere on this, for those familiar with the first it should be a grave disappointment after high expectations. The action scenes at the end I loved, typical Patlabor, but again familiarity with the characters is key. I so want to love this and in a way I do but god, it was boring for a long while there. Talk, talk, talk. Much like this post. Way to many words.

Love Actually - (1st Time)Very funny film, I really enjoyed all the love stories, its like the Magnolia of Romantic Comedies. Great performances by most of the cast, especially Bill Nighy, he was the funniest character in the movie. Go see this film, it is very enjoyable.

I gave it one only because the great John Turturro made me laugh more than once. It was a truly terrible movie. All of Sadler's movies are. He should let himself be hired more often. At least then we could like him.

Japanese Story
2003 | dir. Sue Brooks
*** ½

Very strong Australian film that builds perfectly, twists wonderfully, and then fails slightly at its end.

In the Cut
2003 | dir. Jane Campion
***

Despite a wonderful performance from Meg Ryan and a strong storyline involving her sexual awakening, the film's main plot [and visual approach] is a little too "television" for my liking.

Mystic River
2003 | dir. Clint Eastwood
*** ½

Flawed but engaging picture that fails to be anything other than strongly told. Eastwood has no real desire to push the boundarie, I don't think, and while he is clearly a fairly traditional director, he's very good at it. And that's fine by me.

Everything you've heard about Penn's performance is a little silly and over-the-top, by the way. Personally, I was much more partial to those of Kevin Bacon and Tim Robbins.

So. The 2003 list thus far:

01. Kill Bill Vol. 1
02. Japanese Story
03. Mystic River
04. School of Rock
05. Intolerable Cruelty
06. In the Cut

Note that those first two are almost interchangable, and that I probably need to see them both again, in close proximity to one another.

Not one stinkin' four star film in there, dammit. I'm hoping Dogville, Lost in Translation and Cold Mountain will end change all that though. Possibly 21 Grams. Maybe.

It hasn't been a bad year by any means. But it's not yet shown me its brilliance yet either...

Exactly!!!

I didn't like it. It was somewhat boring and just didn't draw any attention. It goes on and on, and there were moments that I felt so embarassed for each of the actors. I love watching Hugh Grant's (for example) films, , but this just didn't cut it.
I advise you to stay away from this flop.

I didn't think any part was boring, I thought it was very entertaining and funny.

I actually wanted for the film to keep going on and on, i didn't want it to end. As for the embarresing moments, there were some, but they were very funny.

Donnie Darko: 10/10 (one of my top 20 now...**** probably one of my top 10 now)

Army of Darkness bootleg edition: 6/10 ... its not as good as the vhs release...its got some extra stuff that is good but it took out some of my favorite quotes and they have the orignal ending (which i think sucks compared to the released ending)

Whether it is conspiracy, ridiculous, or truth, it is surely an exceptional film.
