What was the last movie you saw at the theaters?

There Will Be Blood

I am half agony, half hope.
I went to see The Kite Runner today. I haven't read the book, so I can't compare the two, but the movie was very good.

It was interesting for me because I didn't find the protagonist very likeable. I felt a little uncomfortable throughout the movie because I like a character I can believe in. I didn't have that kind of feeling for Amir.

He does eventually redeem himself as much as he is able, and I think what he does will ultimately help him assuage the guilt he should have, but I'm never entirely sure he felt.

It gives a look into some of the customs and people of Afghanistan pre-Taliban and after.

Just watched The Spiderwick Chronicles and Juno...

Put me in your pocket...
To those of you that have seen Sweeney Todd...
...how gory is it (the killlings)? Tim Burton gory or slasher flick glory?

My daughters' been begging me to see it and I'm not sure if it would be too much. Burton's Sleepy Hollow was rated PG-13 and Sweeney Todd is rated R. Are the killings pretty graphic?

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
Actually, Sleepy Hollow was rated R, but Sweeney Todd is much more violent. The throat cuttimgs are numerous and in grisly detail. The Demon Barber actually slices four of them during one song alone! It's your call, but it's a strong R if you ask me. My daughter is 16 now, but I would have taken her to watch it if she was 10. (But you have to remember who her pop is.)

Opps...sorry about the mistaken rating.

Thanks for letting me know that it's a strong R Mark. I may make her wait till it comes out on DVD. Seeing something violent on the big screen can make more of an impact than seeing it on the small screen...where you can fast foward or run out of the room if you want too. My daughter would like to think she's tough, but I suspect it's more of a wanting to be cool thing with her. 'Ooo..but it's Johnny Depp mom'.

I dunno...could be I'm being a little too over protective. Maybe I should just go see it by myself first.

Hitman - Story seems predictable.

I'm Not There
Interesting to say the least. The segments with Cate Blanchett as Dyaln/Jude Quinn were by far my favourites (The Beatles cameo was very funny). Maybe one of the best films of the year, but I'm not certain.

I Am Legend
Definitely not one of the best films of the year. It should be called 28 Days Later: Big Willie Style.

Thursday Next's Avatar
I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Went on a rare trip to the cinema last night, having persuaded Mr. Next to babysit, to see Lust, Caution.

I thought I would be late for the film as it took me so long to find somewhere to park and then ages to queue (which I should have realised going for an 8 o clock film on a Saturday night!). But obviously I forgot to take into account that there are always at least fifteen minutes of adverts before a film and as it was I even got to catch a few trailers (looking forward to My Blueberry Nights, The Other Boelyn Girl and Juno).

Lust, Caution is a good film. I think Ang Lee is one of my favourite directors. Even though I don't like all of his films, I love some of them (Sense and Sensibility and Brokeback Mountain) and I like the way his films are all different in terms of setting and genre, characterised by style, polish and drama.

Lust, Caution is the story of a shy student who accepts a job pretending to be the wife of a businessman in order to seduce and allow the Chinese resistance to assassinate a leading collaborator.

Tony Leung is always good value and Wei Tang who plays the heroine was astonishing. The film was long, but well paced so it never dragged. I know that this has been described as an erotic spy thriller...but while there was quite a bit of sex towards the end (with a surprising repertoire of different positions), it was quite raw and violent, so those looking for a bit of titillation will be disappointed.

The ending colours your entire view of the film, so I really can't give it away, but I will say the film as a whole was a little more brutal than I was expecting.

WARNING: "Lust,Caution" spoilers below
It annoyed me at first that she would betray her friends in order to save the life of a mass murderer just because he gave her a pretty ring, but as I thought about it I realised that her friends/the resistance had done nothing but pimp her out for there own purposes for years, and she had been abandoned without affection by them as well as her father, so why wouldn't she put Yee's twisted affection first? Or was it that she just lost her nerve?

the killings are very graphic and lots of blood all over.....mr todd does a great job of slashing people's throats..and mr. burton goes through much lengths to show that..

the movie is excellent though...great acting and johnny depp, helena bonham carter and even alan rickman can sing...

i am legend...not as gory as i thought it would be and a sad story...

will smith is the standout as a scientist trying to find a cure for a virus that has infected the entire country, especially the new york area...

excellent acting all around and great cinematography...don't miss this...i'm actually surprised that will smith wasn't nominated for anything else...

Aye boy don't spit in my drink!

There Will Be Blood
Written and Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring Daniel-Day Lewis, Paul Dano, Dillon Freasier

Paul Thomas Anderson has scored himself quite a bit of critical and audience recognition over the past decade with Boogie Nights and Magnolia (I love both), though some naysayers would accuse him of biting off a bit too much from obvious influences of his like Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman. Whatever, no biggie in my opinion because all influence those two had on him is not at all evident in this multi-layered and slow-boiling character study.

Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) is a beaten down roughneck who wisely decides to make a go of the oil drilling business after getting burned while digging for silver. The way he acts indicates that he hasn't had much luck with people, love, God, family and even happiness. The entire film stretches out over almost thirty years telling the story of this one man and we, the audience, are given the task of wrapping our heads around the idea of a man with no emotional attachments on this Earth. Why does a man who hates himself persist? I still haven't come to a clear understanding of Daniel Plainview, but I had fun watching him troll through the beginning of the twentieth century, extracting oil in a most efficient fashion from the Earth.

Daniel Day-Lewis, at first, just looks like he's doing an alteration on his Bill the Butcher performance, but by the end of the movie it's apparent that he's done something much grander than that. Watching him on-screen is sickly fascinating, but it's impossible to turn away. On paper the character of Daniel Plainview is a heartless monstrosity. It's simply his nature and Daniel Day-Lewis brings him to life.

Another performance and character that I have to mention is that of Eli, played perfectly by Paul Dano. Eli is an overzealous preacher that attempts to interject himself into various facets of Plainview's drilling of the small settlement of Little Boston and if it weren't for the faint smell of exploitative scumbag that hangs around his head, we'd almost feel bad for him. The clashes between him and Daniel Plainview are some of the best parts of the movie and Dano, amazingly, holds his own against the great Daniel Day-Lewis while he's at the top of his game.

This movie was like a tiny flame that slowly, but surely, grows into a raging inferno and I had so much fun watching.

I am Legend........Awsome! check it out!

the last movie i've watched was Enchanted. .
