The Hilarious History of Holiday Horror

With the release of Eli Roth's 'Thanksgiving' I thought we could categorically add another HOLIDAY HORROR favourite to this Topic Thread.

In 1974, before John Carpenter's Halloween would become the highest grossing independent film of all time, and ignite a trend of slasher flicks designed around specific holidays, there was a small Canadian picture about a sorority house that is terrorized by a stranger making frightening phone calls during Christmas break.

So I offer the first Holiday Horror movie, BLACK CHRISTMAS by Bob Clark. Coincidentally another amazing Christmas movie would be directed by Clark - just a little less bloody, in A Christmas Story.

You Better Watch Out, aka. Christmas Evil (1980) is one of my favourite holiday horror films.

Black Christmas is really the great Christmas horror movie.


Going down a bit for b-movie levels, I did enjoy To All a Goodnight (1980).

There is also Silent Night, Deadly Night.

Blood Rage will remain my Thanksgiving horror movie of choice.

This one just got added to Shudder. I was "watching" it, but then realized I wasn't tuned into it, so I'll have to give it a spin some other time.

There just aren't any Easter Horror movies, are there?

Okay, the working title right now is just "Risen"... think Night of the Lepus (1972) meets Harvey (1950)... throw in some reanimated corpses (that hatch out of colored eggs when you find them) and a big knife! (Oh, and "Peeps" that grow into full size, zombie chickens once they're in your throat with really sharp talons!)

The head mean girl has major theater kid energy. It goes a long way for the entertainment value.

Also the 2006 remake of Black Christmas is top tier. The 2019 one can kick rocks.

Remarkably, the only one I ever heard of on that list was Night of the Lepus.

The 2019 one was absolute trash to me. I'll never watch that one by myself ever again.

I know a lot of people don't like the 2019 one, but I really enjoy it. I found it fun and entertaining. I've watched it 5 times.

I thought the 2019 Black Christmas was 'okay', but there was no reason to connect it to the far superior original. I haven't seen the second one.


Number one holiday horror movie ever has to be Gremlins. Brilliant movie, and surprisingly dark for Spielberg. Black Christmas (1974) is the second best.


Third best came out of nowhere for me. It's Advent Calendar (2021). Low budget, but extremely good, with plenty of dark, visceral moments. Instead of cheap scares, it focuses on psychological terror, that slowly builds to a cunning ending.
