Re: 21st Hall of Fame

Looking forward to this! and I really hope everyone likes my nom this time around:p

Wyldesyde19 12-26-19 10:34 PM

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

I’m in, but give me a day to go over my collection to choose a worthy nominee 🙂

Wyldesyde19 12-27-19 02:35 PM

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

Ok, I’ve narrowed it down to about 3 or 4. Will make my pick probably later in the day.
Go ahead and announce the nominations if I’ve taken too long in the meantime. I don’t want to hold it up

Siddon 12-27-19 02:58 PM

Oh we're not even close to announcement's we've got four noms...

Anyways I changed my mind...my new nominee is celebrated it's 30th Anniversary this year and was an Oscar winner and favorite film of mine from 1979.

Cool, I just didn’t want to hold it up any, especially since I’ve got a few really good choices and it’s so hard to pick.
Also, if your pick is what I think it is, it may be one of my potential picks as well. In which case, that helps narrow things for me

Citizen Rules 12-27-19 03:47 PM

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

I'm sure some of the regular HoF members are off doing the holiday thing, so I bet in a few days when they're back on MoFo we'll get more members joining.

ahwell 12-27-19 07:15 PM

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

Yeah, Miss Vicky and rauldc will hopefully join, plus neiba and a couple regulars I’m probably forgetting. Hopefully we can get it up to 10 like the last couple.

edarsenal 12-27-19 07:19 PM

I'm in -- NO IDEA what to nom, so I'm off to figure that out lol

I'm still stuck with the thought that I'd have to watch a bunch of movies I've already seen, but I'm thinking about it.

That’s fair enough. You’ve checked off 4 of the 5 current noms so no worries if you’re not up to it. Just thought I would ask.:)

Magic. :D

The format for the mention feature is (without the spaces): [ MENTION=75520 ]Frightened Inmate No. 2[ /MENTION ]

The number in the first bracket is unique to each member. So if you go to their profile and look at their profile's url, you can see their number. I got his number - which is 75520 - and put it in the bracket.

I'm pretty sure you don't even have to put the user's name at all. Let me test that. Ahwell's number is 101613.

@Watch more Joaquin

Did you get a mention, ahwell?

I didn’t get the mention notification, but I see what you mean now.

CosmicRunaway 12-29-19 06:41 AM

I haven't participated in a General Hall of Fame in what seems like forever, so I probably should join. The problem is that I always take a long time to think of a film, even for speciality HoFs with more limited options. Lately I've only been catching up on the 2019 flicks I missed in theatres, so I haven't watched or rewatched anything I'd nominate.

So I'm thinking about it, but am not overly optimistic haha.

You don't need the user's number to use the mention tags. Without numbers you definitely need to spell their name correctly though. I use the @ shortcut for anyone with no spaces in their name, and mention for everyone else.

In the "go advanced" post area, the little speaker icon at the top will put the mention code in for you if you don't want to type it out.

For most MoFos, yes. For whatever reason, it doesn’t work for Inmate. Try it and see.

Chypmunk 12-29-19 10:59 AM

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

I think it might be because mentions going into prison need to get vetted by the Governor first. That is purely a guess though so don't quote me on that.

We have virtually no old movies, which is interesting. Oldest is 1979, 2 from the 80s, 1 from the 90s, 1 from 00s and last 2 from 10s.

I almost went with “Seven Samurai” but felt it was a too long.
In fact, there were a few of my picks from the 70’s that ultimately passed on.
Don’t worry, they’ll get nominated down the road 😏

Seven Samurai would've been a great nom and I've never seen it yet...

I have a text file with 100s of potential HoF noms for me to use, including some from the 70s. I wish I could nominate them all:)

I really considered it, but it’s really long and I took that into everyone’s account. Watching a long movie is quite chore, especially if one doesn’t enjoy it
Although I thoroughly enjoy Seven Samurai

I always try to pick films that aren't too long for that reason. I made an exception with Brimstone but quite a few people hated it so I'll try to keep my noms under two hours. Still trying to decide whether or not to join (maybe I'll rewatch a potential nom later today).

I’m in the same boat with the western HOF. Only reviews 1 of the 8 but I should be able to start hitting a few more in the next few weeks
Almost done with the comedy HOF

Haha, actually my nom is also inspired by Citizen Rules, although I'm not sure he knows what it is. We discussed it earlier this year.

My memory is so short that I don't have a clue to what is. I guess I'll wait and see.

Glad! to hear we've got 10 members so far:)

Really look forward to Tree of Life.

I do like your pick! However, I may not like it as much as other films here. 😏
Moonstruck and Quills are pretty stiff competition and Dark City is a personal favorite of mine.

Wyldesyde19 01-01-20 09:11 PM

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

I own a few of these and Moonstruck is available on Amazon video last I checked. Will double check later on.
Going to get a head start tonight on this

Miss Vicky 01-01-20 09:51 PM

I've seen 6 out of 10 of these and have 4 of those 6 on DVD.

Being There - I haven't seen this one and I'm not sure I've ever even heard of it.
The Breakfast Club - Seen it numerous times. It's an all-time favorite.
Dark City - Seen it, own it. Very good movie, but not a favorite.
Jagten - Seen it for a previous HOF, IIRC. Good movie.
Moonstruck - Have seen it multiple times, but not since I was a kid. I vaguely remember liking it.
Pretty Baby - Never seen it.
Pride - Don't think I've even heard of this one.
Quills- My favorite movie. I nominated it in a previous HOF, but I think raul was the only person who participated in that one that is also participating in this one. I'm interested to see what the rest think. Doubt it'll do well, though.
The Tree of Life - Never seen it.
Wedding Crashers - Not a favorite, but it's a rare comedy that I like. Plus I've got a soft spot for Vince Vaughn.

Citizen Rules 01-01-20 09:58 PM

As usual my thoughts on the noms

Pretty Baby (1978) pahaK...Good choice! I've heard about this movie since I was a kid but never seen it, so glad to have a chance to watch it. I do have a quality link if anyone needs it.

Being There (1979) Siddon...I thought for sure when Siddon said he went with an Oscar winner from 1979 it would be The Deerhunter. This looks cool and like something I might like.

The Breakfast Club (1985) Citizen Rules...Which one are you? And which one am I? Take a guess if you can, but I bet you'll guess me wrong.

Moonstruck (1987) edarsenal...I might have seen this, but don't remember it so glad to have it nominated.

Dark City (1998) wyldesyde19...Interested in watching this again.

Quills (2000) Miss Vicky...I knew you'd nominate this! I do like Kate Winslet and Phoenix is a great actor, but you already knew that! I don't know if this will be something I like, so we'll see.

Wedding Crashers (2005) rauldc14...This sounds fun and I might have seen it. I don't log films so who knows.

The Tree of Life (2011)
ahwell...You say we talked about this? I don't remember what I said, but this is one of the very few films that I shut off at the beginning and wished I had seen the whole thing. Now I will!

The Hunt (Jagten) (2012) neiba...Wait a minute, didn't you nominate this before in the 13th HoF and then dropped out. Does that mean you're planning a repeat;)

Pride (2014) The Usual Suspect....Never heard of this so this will be a blind watch.

The Deer Hunter won the previous year (1978).
I actually thought he might have been nominating Apocalypse Now, which was one of my choices. It was either that, Norma Rae, or Kramer vs Kramer.

Wyldesyde19 01-01-20 10:10 PM

I’ve seen 5 of the films and have heard of all but two. A quick search on Wikipedia reveals they were both nominated for major awards previously.
The Hunt (best foreign film Oscar nominee I see)
Pride (best comedy or musical golden globe nominee)
Both look interesting.

Quills just may be the front runner in my opinion, as that’s an amazing movie that I can’t wait to rewatch. (Thanks Miss Vicky!)

Obviously I’ll wait and see the others I haven’t seen yet before I make my decision. (particularly Being There and The Tree of Life).

Of course that makes since, I hadn't thought about that. BTW all of those films are good!

As it was I only seen the first 10 minutes or so. Well one of these days I'll hopefully get to check it out again.

Wyldesyde19 01-01-20 11:38 PM

Wedding Crashers

You know what? Shout out to rauldc14 for this nomination. This is one the few comedies that still holds up over a decade after its first release.

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play 2 friends who crash weddings. It plays off of hijinks like you would expect, but you know what? They are tied together very well. And there’s also some heart to this story.

Vaughn in particular is hilarious in this, as he takes the hits, both literal and figuratively, throughout the film. Wilson plays his part as the rake who secretly wants to settle down. If he could only find the right woman.
Enter Rachel McAdams. The scenes between them are funny, and somewhat relatable as they both long for each other both are prevented from coming out and saying so for their own reasons.
If there is one issue with this film, it’s that it’s too long. They could have easily trimmed about 20 mins. I would have started with Will Ferrells scenes myself. He’s completely pointless in this, and he hams it up in what few scenes he’s in. Not a fan.

Seriously, this is a good comedy, and entertaining to boot.

I think I was around when Quills was nominated before, I dug it.

I've also nominated Dark City before, love that film.

I'm really glad people have not seen my nomination, some people haven't even heard of it. So it'll be interesting to see people's reaction to it going in blind.

That’s a large reason why I’ve joined this. So many films out there’s it’s impossible to know them all. Sometimes, there’s that person who has seen a film I’m not familiar with that’ll get my attention.

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

Pretty Baby (1978) pahaK: Like I said, back to the roots: a young girl and kinda controversial film :D Really interested in what people think of it.

Being There (1979) Siddon: Despite being an Oscar winner I don't think I've even heard of it before.

The Breakfast Club (1985) Citizen Rules: I'm almost certain that I've seen this but don't remember anything. It just sounds vaguely familiar.

Moonstruck (1987) edarsenal: Familiar name but I've never been too interested to see it. I guess that'll have to change.

Dark City (1998) wyldesyde19: Saw this when it was new. I think I mostly liked it but there might have been some issues that prevented me from adoring it. Been meaning to rewatch it anyway so now I will.

Quills (2000) Miss Vicky: Seen this one when it was released as well. Again, don't remember much but I think the experience was mostly positive.

Wedding Crashers (2005) rauldc14: Pretty sure I've never seen this. So many comedies this time around :suspicious:

The Tree of Life (2011) ahwell: Haven't seen this. Not too fond of Malick usually so we'll see...

The Hunt (Jagten) (2012) neiba: This one has been on my watchlist for quite a while.

Pride (2014) The Usual Suspect: Haven't seen this one either. And my god, another comedy :(

CosmicRunaway 01-02-20 03:29 AM

I had The Hunt ranked first on my list in the 13th HoF before it was disqualified, so it's nice to see it get another chance.

When I was home last week there a couple different Vince Vaughn films on tv. Dodgeball, Old School...and something else I don't remember now. Maybe it was actually Wedding Crashers. It was weird to see them in between all the Die Hard, Rocky, and Home Alone marathons that were on most channels haha.

I also thought I had watched it cause of a HoF! :O maybe 1 year ago or smthing like that!

Pretty Baby (1978) pahaK Never heard of it

Being There (1979) Siddon Never heard of it.

The Breakfast Club (1985) Citizen Rules Lovely movie that I am looking forward to rewatch. And my bet to win this thing.

Moonstruck (1987) edarsenal Never heard of it

Dark City (1998) wyldesyde19 Never heard of it

Quills (2000) Miss Vicky Watched it 1 year ago, it's pretty good. i'm curious to see how it will do here.

Wedding Crashers (2005) rauldc14 i always considered one of those cheap comedies you watch on a lazy sunday. i watched bits of it on various occasions but never the whole thing.

The Tree of Life (2011)
ahwell I won't rewatch this one cause I was involved in an essay about it last year so I remember it very well... I'd say this is a modern 2001: A Space Odyssey. It won't do well here but i'm willing to bet this is the most perfect film of this HoF by a landslide. It's art cinema at its peak.

The Hunt (Jagten) (2012) neiba @Citizen Rules is right. This is the second time I nominate this. I never got to see how much MoFos like it or not cause i had to give up on the HoF. It won't happen again, but if by any chance did, i think we can say that the film is cursed.

Pride (2014) The Usual Suspect Never heard of it.

An interesting set of movies with some surprising choices. I have seen 4 and a half, 3 of them are huge favourites, and there's a lot of unknown films. Maybe I can find some hidden gem.

Pretty Baby (1978)
Nominated by: pahaK
Like CR, I was very curious about this when it came out; should be a very good watch

Being There (1979)
Nominated by: Siddon
I had seen this in 9th Grade with a strong love for his Pink Panther role and his cameos on Laugh-In and was surprised at the complete difference of the role. About a decade ago, having learned of his hatred of playing a buffoon (The Inspector) and that this was a film he had wanted to do for a very long time I rewatched it with much more appreciation and a more open mind.
Looking forward to a rewatch.

The Breakfast Club (1985)
Nominated by: Citizen Rules
Been a few decades since my last watch of this; it should be a lot of fun.

Moonstruck (1987)
Nominated by: edarsenal
I had watched this dozen of times when it came out and re-watched it the night I decided to go with it. LOVED Olympia Dukakis in this and still do.

Dark City (1998)
Nominated by: wyldesyde19
HUGE fan of this. I own the Director's Cut. Great to have a reason to see it again.

Quills (2000)
Nominated by: Miss Vicky
meh

;) @Miss Vicky

Wedding Crashers (2005)
Nominated by: rauldc14
TBH I'm seriously dreading this one. Sorry raul

The Tree of Life (2011)
Nominated by: ahwell
Have not heard of this but I am intrigued

The Hunt (Jagten) (2012)
Nominated by: neiba
Haven't seen this but DO remember the talk regarding this film. Should be both harrowing and incredible

Pride (2014)
Nominated by: The Usual Suspect
Have not heard of this but looks very worthwhile

Is the director's cut longer? How does it compare to the theatrical release?

@Wyldesyde19 have you seen the director's cut? Opinions? Just wondering which version to watch.

I’ve been told directors cut is the better one by far, so that’s what I’ll be watching (unless Wyldesyde19 cares which one).

CosmicRunaway 01-02-20 06:25 PM

If possible, I actually recommend watching the opening of Dark City's theatrical cut, then switching to the director's cut after. The voice over is unnecessary, but I think the opening sequence is far more interesting in that version.

WARNING: "Opening Difference" spoilers below
The theatrical cut has everyone suddenly falling asleep at the exact same time, which is a bit creepy. The director's cut just has a guy checking his watch. If you've seen the original version, you know why he's worried about the time. If you haven't, then it lacks context and doesn't have that same air of mystery.

Siddon 01-02-20 06:41 PM

This is like Cinema Paradiso all over again, this is the one I'm watching because I own it.

I’d have to double check but I’m pretty sure I own the directors cut.
I’ve seen both, but it’s been so long, Since I’ve seen the original version, I can’t Accurately compare. The last several growing have been of the directors cut, if indeed I own it.
It doesn’t matter to me which version you watch unless there is a need to

cricket 01-02-20 07:06 PM

Wedding Crashers is my #4 comedy since the start of the 90's behind Beerfest, The Hangover, and Old School. It doesn't get much better if it's the type of comedy you like.

I'm not a big fan of historical costume drama types, but Quills is one of the best I've seen. Oddly enough it has one of the funniest scenes I've seen in any movie.

Saw Dark City once and couldn't get into it. It's really not my type but I would try it again.

I'm not generally a fan of rom-coms either, but Moonstruck is one of the best I've seen.

Saw The Hunt twice. Didn't love it as much the second time but it's a great movie.

I love 70's Hal Ashby and nominated one of his movies before (Coming Home). The only one I wasn't a big fan of was Being There. I was surprised because I've always thought of it as his most well known and most highly acclaimed. It should do well here.

There are movies that I think are the best representatives of their decades; Easy Rider for the 60's, Saturday Night Fever for the 70's, and The Breakfast Club for the 80's. A total classic that'd most likely be my #1 here.

I will definitely watch Tree of Life and I'll see about Pretty Baby and Pride.

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

The Tree of Life

I'll do my own nomination first, as it's the only one I've seen and I won't be rewatching it because it was only a month or two back. To me this is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and my fourth favorite of the 2010s. I haven't seen anything else by Malick but I'm really looking forward to his stuff now (especially A Hidden Life). Brad Pitt gives his best performance in my opinion, and the rest of the acting is great too. The cinematography and visuals are absolutely eye popping, I mean, some of the best I've ever seen. This movie could have been a pretentious mess, and in many ways it can verge on pretentious, but Malick holds it all together with believable characters, moments of both life and death, and an overall feeling of pure wonder at existence. Just incredible.

Re: 21st Hall of Fame

Pretty Baby

This film wasn't really for me. I liked the first hour and thought the slice of life parts were set up really well. It kind of reminded me of the Florida Project.

However, the second half, most notably when Violet gets involved with Belloq, really goes down hill. I think the characters make decisions that they wouldn't have at the beginning, the plot becomes unrealistic, and it just drags.

It was an interesting watch, but not something I really want to return to.

You know, I’ve watched both the original and directors cut of Apocalypse Now Redux and I much preferred the original version. Have not seen the latest version. So I understand what you’re talking about.
I own all three versions of Close Encounters of the Third Kind but have yet to watch them all. I wonder how those are?
And I haven’t watched all...what is it, 4 versions of Blade Runner?

Yup 4 versions of Blade Runner on the Blu-Ray set. I think the worst Director's Cut I've seen is Dune. I like Dune but only in the original theatrical cut. As far as Blade Runner goes I'm totally a fan of the original theatrical cut and I hate the so called Final Cut of Blade Runner.
