MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups/Draft

It's almost time again.

First thing's first: if you're not in this league already, there may be room for you! I should warn you that it's a competitive league, so you'll want to have played fantasy baseball before, and while it's not strictly necessary to have played Roto-style before it's a big plus. If you'd like to play just reply and say so, and we'll do our best to make room. Please note that we give priority to a) returning owners and b) more active forum users.

If you're a returning owner, please take a moment to ensure your email address with Yahoo is correct, and if it's not, please PM me the address you're using right away so I can update it accordingly.

Draft Time

Please read this in full!

I'm thinking Saturday, March 9th or Sunday, March 10th, around the usual time (1:00 PM ET/10:00 AM PT). Either works for me, but I need everyone to please reply by letting me know your availability for both dates. IE: "I can do both the 9th and 10th" or "I can do one but not the other." Also fine to say "I can do the previous/following weekend but not that one." But whatever you say, please do not just list a preference without signaling your availability for the other options. If you do that you are not confirmed. For those who think this sounds harsh, I can only say that in the long history of the league, I ask people every year about this and every year someone skims the post and doesn't read it.

Also please note that you must confirm your involvement even if you're a returning team. If I don't hear from you, either in this thread or via PM/profile comment/post comment/carrier pigeon/whatever, you won't be able to play. It's a simple way to hedge against inactive owners and, frankly, I think it's a fair way to give new people a chance to join the league.

Now for draft order so I can fuel my hopeful delusions with multiple mocks :)

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

In!

Aiming for 5th place, as usual ;)

I can do both the 9th and 10th*

*Confirming as we speak with my wife, just to make sure I am not forgetting a wedding or something. 99% sure I am free for both days though.

Powdered Water 02-01-24 01:57 PM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

I too am 99 percent sure I can do both days. Or even later in the month if necessary. I may have some kind of work schedule by then tho. So there's a small possibility I may have a conflict. But as of right now its all gucci!

Sedai 02-01-24 01:58 PM

Confirmed on both dates!

Banknotes Harper 02-01-24 06:26 PM

I'm in. Both dates work for me, with a preference for Saturday.

I'm in and I can make either date work!

In and I can do both days

TONGO 02-02-24 01:01 PM

4 more to go, and then we can determine draft order, yes.... :licklips:

TONGO 02-03-24 10:26 AM

I asked Holden again. He gave his annual "Nope". :(

TONGO 02-03-24 12:25 PM

Not that we're going to do it, but would it even be fun if we did an 8 team league? Imagine our rosters lol! There would be like zero reason to have to trade, the waivers would look flush for once, and able to pick up players with no wait time because I wouldn't have to pick them up and drop them so much. Hm! I think it would look good but feel empty

As far as I know, I can do either day.

Bumping this to say there's a decent chance we'll have an opening if anyone's been looking to play.

Maybe I can have two teams. Up my chances lol

TONGO 02-06-24 03:39 PM

Wylde still said hes still thinking about it and says hes interested.

I wish we could finalize everything so I can give proper notice to get that day off from work.

I'll sell mine for a lot less than the Orioles went for.

TONGO 02-07-24 01:38 PM

2 more spots to go. Yoda said he's pretty sure Adam is 90% in but is out if the country right now. So that would mean one spot left.

Yoda 02-07-24 02:46 PM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

Yeah, haven't heard from mikey. He hasn't visited the site since the last season ended, so I dunno.

Yoda 02-12-24 10:35 AM

Alright, I tagged him a week ago so at this point if somebody's interested in the spot, let me know. Want to finalize teams soon so we can draw a draft order and settle things.

Wyldesyde19 02-13-24 06:30 PM

So, as I indicated to Yoda in PM, I’m willing to join. It does sound fun.

Yoda 02-14-24 11:48 AM

Adam's good. Or, as he put it, "as good as he can be." He travels all over for work now and might be in Tokyo, but would try to draft from there if need be.

He was in Dubai just a couple of weeks ago, too. I asked him "When did you become James Bond?" and he sent me this:

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

Okay, we're set, I'll draw the draft order in a bit (tomorrow if work is too distracting, probably) and post it here so you can all mock more productively.

Yoda 02-14-24 01:28 PM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

Started sending messages asking for slot choices, everybody make sure to check and reply quickly. If you haven't received one, unfortunately that means you're on the back half, choice-wise, but hey, don't worry, decent chance people in front of you pick slots you didn't want anyway! :)

Sedai 02-14-24 02:14 PM

Also: A BIG thanks once again to Chris for doing all the behind-the-scenes work in the league. Much appreciated!

Wyldesyde19 02-14-24 02:57 PM

Thanks for accepting me in the league guys. Looking forward to seeing how this goes. It’ll be interesting, at the least. Hopefully I don’t mess up my line up and second guess my starters oh well*
Let play ball!

With 180 days of lineups coming...this is definitely happening.

But that's the nice thing about roto, there's just so many decisions, it's unlikely a single decision swings things. It really is one of the fairest fantasy experiences out there, because it's the accumulation of thousands of decisions.

Sedai 02-15-24 10:13 AM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

In a completely bizarre turn of events, I've started researching players on a day that isn't the same day as the draft. :D

Let's see if putting some extra work in changes things up for me...

TONGO 02-15-24 11:40 AM

I must have been at the end of the line because I haven't heard from Chris though he already has my draft order. Nice thing about Fantasy Baseball is your entire season doesnt live or die by however well you draft. So much talent out there, I've heard of 20 team Fantasy Baseball leagues. Imagine that! You can't do that in fantasy football.

It is always quite nice to pick first and just tell everyone who you're taking. YOU CAN'T STOP ME.

Wyldesyde19 02-15-24 03:32 PM

Until he gets injured and is out for the rest of the year. Or worse…he pulls a Mike Trout.
Then it’s all like “Now who’s laughing?”

We can always trade draft positions. Your first pick getting hurt and being a bust would hurt alot less if it was the 11th pick ;) Seriously though, glad you're here and thanks for stepping up.

Thanks to Yoda also for his time and patience getting this together.

We allowing a prospect slot or two this year? Best to cement it now before we draft. I say Yes :)

Yoda 02-15-24 06:41 PM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

I mean, I'd be fine with it but I'm not sure of the mechanics and we'd need, say, two-thirds buy-in very very quickly to do it this year.

It's very hard to get responses from people on even the most basic stuff so significant changes tend to require a lot of lead time.

TONGO 02-15-24 08:59 PM

Yeah. Best to just let things settle now that all the pieces have been set.

We all do that, so good luck in a piranha pool! ;)

TONGO 02-16-24 12:30 PM

Well having done a few mocks, I now know who Im definitely not getting, and it's the guy that's fallen down to me everytime - Shohei Ohtani. Our league is the anti-mock, the anti-reasonable, and even the anti-anti.

Wyldesyde19 02-16-24 07:18 PM

So looking at the stats that we get points for, how hard are holds? Does the pitcher need one out or does he need to go a whole inning without giving up a run or is it the lead?
Reading about it seemed to say it’s both but depends on the lead, I guess?

TONGO 02-16-24 07:48 PM

I dont know the fine points of the rules either. Just Closers in the 9th get Saves, and 8th inning setup men, and any other pitcher having a 0.00 ERA inning gets a Hold. I think. I probably wasn't the best choice to answer this question :/

Wyldesyde19 02-16-24 07:52 PM

Lol yeah, it’s a little confusing what I’ve read about it as there are a few conditions that can be met

Yoda 02-16-24 08:08 PM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

It's exactly the same as saves, except it doesn't end the game. So yeah, any even a single out can do it.

Wyldesyde19 02-16-24 08:22 PM

Originally Posted by Yoda (Post 2439644)

Yeah, that makes less complicated then the following description I had read:

One of two conditions must be met for a pitcher to record a hold: 1)*He enters with a lead of three runs or less and maintains that lead while recording at least one out. 2) He enters the game with the tying run on-deck, at the plate or on the bases, and records an out

TONGO 02-17-24 12:16 PM

I know me and PW have spoken about auto drafting, I actually will next season for Football, but it really is a night and day difference in the mocks I've done for baseball. As Forrest Gump said "I'm not a smart man, but I do know what suck is." It is in everyone's best interest to be there for draft day.

Banknotes Harper 02-17-24 02:40 PM

(1) is what most people think of for a save situation

Less commonly, (2) would also get you a save if you come in, say, with a 4 run lead, bases loaded, and get the last out(s).

Even less common than that, a pitcher can get a save if they pitch the final 3 innings of a game while maintaining the lead, no matter how many runs they're up by.

TONGO 02-21-24 02:35 PM

Allright, here's another proclamation from me which will make everyone say or think "Bull****!" while reading it. I am done with Mock Drafting. The more I do it, the more I just know I'm setting myself up for disappointment. That's worse than wasting time, it's like a toxic timesink. Best to go in with a clear mind and no set agenda which gets torpedoed.

That is all.

Wyldesyde19 02-21-24 03:33 PM

Lol yep. I did a few and got pretty much everyone I wanted and said “Well, this is just unrealistic. Thanks for getting my hopes up mock draft!”

Sedai 02-21-24 03:46 PM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

Especially in the MoFo draft, where pretty much everyone is super active and at least somewhat knowledgeable about the player base, the drafts end up being exceptionally challenging. I would say the ability to keep a fluid outlook and adapt quickly is more important than any target lists or things of that nature. Try to capture value and upside as best you can in a pool full of managers trying to capture value and upside. ;)

TONGO 02-26-24 12:23 PM

Less than 2 weeks now to the draft. Oh I wish we knew what we all had already so I could start trading my team away. ;)

You guys can’t take them all….right? RIGHT?!

Yankees: No. After a *ghastly* near .500 season, they look adequately retooled after bringing in Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, Marcus Stroman, and Trent Grisham.

Red Sox: Probably yes. They've finished in last place in the AL East 3 out of the last 4 years. Their ownership has been trying to use "being smart" as a cover to excuse spending below their means. I wouldn't be surprised if they came in 5th again.

My best guess for the AL East standings is: Orioles (1st), Yankees, Rays, Jays, Sawx

Maybe even if the Red Sox get Montgomery, they're still a 5th place team!

I think the Rays will battle Baltimore for 1st.

Banknotes Harper 02-29-24 02:17 AM

Re: MoFo Fantasy Baseball - 2024 Signups

I think they have a great collection of position players, and lots of intriguing pitchers, but the rotation depth looks to be a problem. No Glasnow and no McClanahan at all, and no Baz until June or July.

The hardest time of the fantasy baseball year for me is the period of time between drafting my team and Opening Day. It's terrible waiting!

Its hard, but at least we have a healthy hope that our squad could be "the one". Then the season starts. You peek at your team and the Hits/At Bat counter says 2/30, or the balls being hit are thrown by your ace who had an ERA less than 2 the year before, or worse....they do phenomenal. Then nothing for three months, but you dont make any changes cause you think theyll rebound. Thats not even touching on how fragile everyone is. Theres way more injuries it seems in Fantasy Baseball than Football. There is no predicting it, there is no getting comfortable. Its great. :) I can see now why a dog can have so much fun chasing its tail.

TONGO 03-05-24 03:24 PM

Hey if you're a baseball fan and not a headcase like me then you'll find a greater appreciation for the players and the game. There are players I never would have ever heard of that I now know well because of Fantasy Baseball. Statwise at least.

3 more days. I actually did a mock draft today and it was the first time where it wasn't a snake format. Interesting. Yoda please make sure ours is set up correctly in case Yahoo tinkered with their defaults. :)

The word for the day is "Finally". Under 4 hours now till we draft. No notes, no set plan, just me and my gut. I found out quickly doing mock drafts was as constructive as playing a timesink game. My apologies ahead of time to whoever is picking right before me, I'll probably be cussing you on some occasions when you grab my pick. PW picks behind me. its ok Chris, I forgive you ;) Picking behind me must feel like that box of chocolate analogy.

If anyone is open to a trade before the season I mostly respond quickly. That's all I hope for when sending an offer too. Trading is a part of baseball. To simply not trade I dont think someone can win. I wish Mark traded, I think he only did twice, like ever. If he had I'm sure he would have won a season or two. He had a great baseball mind, and temperment for it.

This season I'm dedicating to my Dad who passed away in September. He was 94. He played for a world champion softball team in the late 50s as a catcher. His picture from back then is the photo im using for my team. He coached little league for over 20 years and loved the game. Yes he watched the Rays games too, but I strongly feel Pop would Not have played Fantasy Baseball the way I have (understatement). He was a winner, and understood how mangers and players think alike. Anyway, I'm not pointing at an outfield fence with my bat, just hoping to have fun this year and not ruin anyone elses.

Took the day off from work for this, and now my Wifi is down. So it looks like I'll be doing it from my phone again. That's a scary spot to be in when you only have 2 or 3 bars.

94! Dang. I'm torn between wanting to say "condolences" and wanting to say "congratulations," because what a run. And yeah, while a lot of people just come to the game on their own, there's obviously a lot of stuff with fatherhood tied up in it. A lot of guys basically bequeath the game to their sons.

Anyway, just have some fun today and remember: you've got thousands of decisions throughout the season and lots of time to figure things out. The draft may be the single most important day, but it's still less important than all the stuff you do after it combined.

As for mocks, yeah, I'm coming to the same conclusion: too many bots, too many people who don't take them seriously. I get a little something out of them, still, but it's usually more a vague sense of which things I should or shouldn't wait on. It kind of refreshes your memory of various mid-tier guys and after awhile you kind of realize you like taking your chances at some positions and not others. But I get that from a relatively small number of mocks, too, and eschewing them a bit over the last few years has still worked out okay.

Plus, basically every year I begrudgingly take someone I didn't really want and they have a great year anyway. Last year it was Adolis Garcia. Shows what I know.

Looking forward to it. :) Draft days are some of my favorite days of the year, even though I'd say I leave them happy maybe a fourth of the time.

Under 90 minutes to go: https://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/30231

Make sure to test the draft thingy in your browser/turn down security settings/whatever, since it can take a few minutes to sort that out sometimes.

I like the app. I've only had it crash a few times in all the years I've been using it.

I think Dan set one up last year, I'm kind of catching up on stuff, we'll see if he or Tim or whoever gives it a go. If they do I'll help disseminate it.

Every-fricking-Ray that I wanted to draft got nabbed before me the round I was gonna take them. Even Junior Caminero! sickening  I grabbed Taj Bradley to act as a band-aid for this compound fracture to my soul.

I dont think I have to worry about home runs this season, but my stolen bags could use a boost. We will see, hopefully it wont matter.
