So, time to signup for fantasy baseball again.

First thing's first: if you're not in this league already, there may be room for you! I should warn you that it's a competitive league, so you'll want to have played fantasy baseball before, and while it's not necessary having played Roto-style before is a big plus. If you'd like to play just reply and say so, and we'll do our best to make room. Please note that we give priority to a) returning owners and b) more active users.

If you're a returning owner, please take a moment to ensure your email address with Yahoo is correct, and if it's not, please PM me the address you're using so I can update it accordingly.

Please read this in full:

I'm thinking Saturday, March 6th or Sunday, March 7th, around the usual time (1:00 PM ET/10:00 AM PT). Either works for me, but I need everyone to please reply by letting me know your availability for both dates. IE: "I can do both the 5th and 6th" or "I can do one but not the other." Also fine to say "I can do the following weekend but not that one." But whatever you say, please do not just list a preference without signaling your availability for the other options. This happens every year, even when I put it in bold red text, and it even happened last year despite me including a whiny paragraph like this one about it.

Also please note that you must confirm your involvement even if you're a returning team. If I don't hear from you, either in this thread or via PM/profile comment/post comment/carrier pigeon/whatever, you won't be able to play. It's a simple way to hedge against inactive owners and, frankly, I think it's a fair way to give new people a chance to join the league.

I want in! I feel like you guys are gonna have some problems this year. I've already read some articles. That will either intimidate you, or... it won't. With that said: I fully intend to keep taking first place until I don't. So, come and get some mofos!

I'm watching The Battered Bastards of Baseball on Netflix. A documentary when Kurt Russell's dad Bing Russell bought a baseball team called the Mavericks in Portland, Oregon. Maybe 15 minutes into it, and so far so good.

New name "Chasing Homers" a good name for a fantasy baseball team? Yes? No? Complete ass?

There's gotta be a way we can just make @Holden Pike join this league. This game is so fun and challenging! I pay so much more attention to the game now too. The acumen that is required to finish in the top 3 is probably gonna test even the most knowledgeable baseball historian. Seriously. That's how tough this league is.

Thanks for the invite, but I'd be terrible at fantasy baseball. I'm a Mets fan, but I like to watch baseball, not manage it. I follow the games more than the statistics. (When the Mets win, I'm happy. :))

Okay, draft order coming right up.

Like every year (I did a video one year but nobody seems to be demanding proof so I'll skip that until someone does), I take the list of teams as Yahoo displays them to me, put them in a text file with numbered lines (1-12), then go to Random.org and grab a random number from 1-12. Whichever line that is is the first pick. Then I remove that team, grab a number from 1-11, and repeat for the second, and so on.

Yeah, I think this is definitely the first year in a long time where you can legitimately consider not going with him first, to be sure, but that's pushing it. At that point you're basically assuming he'll miss ~20 games.

I thought I was gonna be last again, but 10th will do. The only time I ever got the first overall pick was the only time Yahoo screwed up the draft order, and we just went with it anyway. Me and early round picks are simply not meant to be.

Yeah I know Trout's ranked like 9th in some places but I suspect the ADP will be higher.

It's not insane to take him 3rd or 4th though, particularly if you buy the injury risk thing. But if you let people him in the bottom half of the first round you're basically saying you think he's landing at least one moderate DL stint.

Gonna be hard to top that so why bother? Of course, when you throw the unpredictability of real people into the mix things get a little trickier. I think there was four or five actual people in this draft and who knows how many of them auto drafted after the first couple rounds. I landed Trout in the five position which I believe is right where Yahoo has him ranked.

I haven't drafted in the middle rounds in a minute. It's so much more engaging! I've gotten Trout more than once so this might be a really interesting draft. Acuna seems to mostly be going number 1 but I've seen Tatis also go first. I have yet to see Trout go number 1. End of an era. And maybe, just maybe he'll have one of his finest seasons on roids. I could really fix him up.

He had a cup of coffee with my team in his rookie season and I haven't come close to getting him since. I'll take him. If not imma gonna get the guy I want at 7 even if Trout's gone. You can't stop me. You can only hope to contain me. That's a really old saying that I just made up!

Was making a special point to get some mocks in, and boy...you just can't. There's just almost nothing but bots in those, at least during the day, when I'm trying to do it in the background of various work tasks. Guess I have to sacrifice my precious evening-and-weekend-time to get something real. Booo.

I usually have pretty good luck getting A full draft. It is pretty crazy how quickly people bail tho. Usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes to get one going. Seems like a lot of waiting just to make a pick or two. Besides, the later rounds may be even more important than the early rounds. Its usually just a matter of waiting to see who's gonna make it to you early on. But later on? That's when these leagues are won.

Sheesh! Just did a draft where Soto finally fell to me at 7. Then I nabbed Machado, Sherzer, Abreu, Suarez, Voit and Snell. That was just the beginning. Wow. What a mock. Some times the stars align and you get 2 or 3 good guys to choose from at every round. Goodtimes.

We did the same thing in the previous football season. I'm sure it's come up before then, too, even though it never happened back in the day.

Because the switching has to be agreed on.

Initial order is random because it's the only fair starting point. How would you assign them otherwise? And what would you do if people wanted the same spot?

It never happened because I think most of us assumed we weren't really supposed to switch.
I'd assign the picks the same way just about every sports league does. Whoever wins the league gets last pick second place gets second to last and so on.

In All seriousness, what’s the benefit to trading to the fifth position?

Leaving aside that those leagues need parity to function in a way fantasy leagues do not, they also do it because the last place team still has the same roster afterwards, so they give them a draft advantage to compensate. The logic there doesn't apply, because we're drafting entirely new teams each year.

Possibly nothing, but I prefer it (slightly) because I think the gap between the 2nd-best and 5th-best player is fairly small, so I'd rather have a slightly higher 2nd round pick.

This is pretty much the only reason to trade a draft slot: because you have a slightly different opinion about where some early round skill tier ends or begins. There's obviously no consensus here, as evidenced by the fact that I wanted to move AWAY from the edges of the round and PW apparently wants to move towards them.

For what it's worth not that I ever chime in on here I don't agree with changing spots either. If you were to allow trading of spots I feel like one should give up something for a preferred slot over the other.

Up until the last fantasy football season trading picks hadn't happened. I bet if we take a lightning poll we may find that most of us didn't realize that was an option and I think we discussed this a few years back and it was frowned on. Maybe I'm misremembering. Anyway...

My memory, for whatever that's worth, is that we talked about how we couldn't trade picks in just some rounds and not others, since I don't think that's even possible through the site. I dunno if that's what people would be thinking of, but I'm happy to go back and confirm if anyone cares.

Is anybody else going to have a hard time watching their favorite team this year? The only way to watch the Brewers this year is to have cable. None of the streaming services are carrying FSN anymore. Had sling a couple years ago but dropped them when they quit carrying FSN's local stuff and moved to YouTubetv which has just dropped FSN. Fubo, Hulu Live, neither carry FSN anymore. Sinclair Broadcasting is the common factor in all of this so I'm pinning the blame on them. mostly. Only reason I have any streaming tv is for baseball. Does anybody know if it's possible to avoid blackouts with MLB.tv if I use a VPN?

I would if I felt any desire to watch the Pirates, yeah.

MLB.tv is so bad now. I got it a few years ago and really liked it, but then the following year it actually had removed features, which is nuts. I think they switched to some other video player and it borked a lot of stuff, so I canceled. So many horror stories about stuff like that, where they simultaneously say you can't quit after the season starts, but you don't even know what product you're getting until then. It was great for that one year, though!

I highly doubt the Marlins will be much of anything this year. Last year was just pure luck and certainly the shortened season helped them probably more than any other team.

Thanks! I do like the double picks that come with 1 and 12, but mainly my analysis was just what my hypothetical team would look like after about 4 picks at each slot. After that, I feel like your specific draft position matters less.

It's almost draft day and no one asked, so I thought I might offer a few draft day tips!

First off: If your home team stinks, don't draft them. Any of them. It's liberating not supporting a home team that isn't committed to actually winning. And you can definitely be successfull at this game when not using your home team. I've been doing it for years. It works great.

Next: K's... about half the league needs to catch up to the K game. If you can draft men that average 3 k's per inning, that's great. The rest of us try to get a 1to1 ratio whenever possible. There are many teams in this fine league that don't gather 1500 k's by seasons end. Go get them people.

Ok. I've gotten Trout at least 5 times now. It's a thing. I trust this fine mofo league won't let me get my hands on him but we'll see. I love that guy.

It's good to know who I'm not gonna be getting lol, and after doing a few mocks in the 10th position I honestly have no indication who I'll be getting. It was random there and here is a world of it's own. I'm scared! :(
