There's other things I could have done given the time and opportunity. I woke up and the challenge was over. Some people didn't even get a chance to participate. Challenges like these should last 24 hours.

FACE YOUR FEARS

This is the final challenge we will have before the process of getting into THE FINAL THREE (whatever that process will be, I'm still figuring it out exactly).

It's storytime, again. But don't you worry -- I'm not the judge.

That will be seanc.

I realized that three out of five of you are great writers - Suspect, Cosmic and 7thson. The other two.... well, I do hope you produce something.

I want you to write a non-fiction piece on FEAR.

Specifically, something that has to do with you and fear.

You can write about something that scares you. You can write about a scary event that happened in your life. Maybe a scary event that you eventually overcame and got over -- or one that you still haven't got over.

If you need to, you can fictionalize it, or fictionalize parts of it.

Remember that you are in the FINAL FIVE. This is a great opportunity to not only impress seanc, but everyone else, especially those who might be judging you if you make it into the FINAL THREE.

I invite anybody who's played the game and been eliminated, or even anybody who comes into the thread and sees what's going on.... to write their own non-fiction stories about fear, too. I'm thinking about writing something. Even seanc can write something, if he wants.

But only CosmicRunaway, 7thson, TheUsualSuspect, Jeff Costello and Yam12 will be judged on their stories by seanc.

Composure is part of the game. That's also the time of the game I started to crack up. As much as I was rooting for you, after you lost, I felt a certain sense of relief. This was because I knew that I now never had to vote you out. I had been playing so hard and I suddenly had this realization that I couldn't vote out anybody in my alliance. This is when I started thinking that down the road I would quit or find another way out of the game. I asked SC if I could vote for myself or not vote at all and he said no. This really weighed on my mind despite the fact that I was never concerned about being voted out myself. I think my mind is just conditioned a certain way after watching the show for 35 seasons and seeing how upset people would get after being eliminated. This is one of the reasons I will never play again.

That was our plan to. I was worried you were going to use an idol and wanted someone to throw a vote to Velvet. But no one did. We were too quick in wanting to get our votes in that we messed up too.

Nothing To Fear

Matt stayed at home, playing Rocket League, as he did every night this past month. He was on a hot streak. His wife Michelle, pregnant 9 months, was at her sisters visiting for the evening. He enjoyed this time alone, as he knew it would be in short supply in the near future.

It was snowy outside, a few weeks away from Christmas. The city had had a small ice storm a few days prior, but conscious neighbours salted their driveway and sidewalks for pedestrians. Typical days in Canada.

Matt had just score his highest goal count for the night and was turning it off when he received a phone call. On the other end was Sarah, Michelle’s sister.

“Matthew?”

Matt answered, a little surprised that Sarah would call him.

“Yes?”

“Not to alarm you, but Michelle. She fell.”

“What?”

“Yeah, she was walking to the car with Mike and she slipped on the ice and fell. Don’t worry she is okay.”

“What about the baby?”

“I don’t know, but I think you should come and pick her up. She’s really upset, Mike can drive your car back and I’ll follow, bringing him back home.”

“Okay, I’m on my way”

Matt raced to get his shoes and jacket on, nervous about what had just happened or the repercussions of it. He feared the worst.

The house was only ten minutes away, he got there in under eight.

Michelle sat on the steps, tears in her face. Matt asked what had happened, but got the same answer. She slipped an fell on her way to the car. But why? How? Wasn’t the driveway and sidewalk salted? Didn’t Mike, her brother-in-law, take care of it?

Apparently not.

Michelle didn’t blame him, Matt was angry but let it go. He asked her if she wanted to go to the hospital, she said no, she thinks she is okay. She can feel movement. She claims to have only fallen on her side and the jacket and snow cushioned the fall. Was this enough to calm Matt? No, it wasn’t. He was nervous and scared and feared something might be wrong.

She didn’t go to the hospital as her next check-up was only a week and a half away. Once that day came, she told them that she had fallen and they immediately scolded her for not coming in at once.

Matt was at work in Toronto, more than an hour away. He received another call. It was his wife, Michelle.

“They are yelling at me for not coming in, they are sending me to the labor ward”

“What does that mean? Are you having the baby?”

“I don’t know.”

“Should I leave work? Tell me what is happening?”

The decision was made, Matt left work and headed towards the hospital.

At the hospital the doctor is inspecting Michelle, he says that there is not a lot of fluid around the baby and they need to induce labour right now.

Hundreds of thoughts ran through Matt’s head. Was it a mistake not coming in right away? Is it his fault for not forcing her to come in? Is there something wrong with the baby?

Hours pass, they sit in the hospital room waiting for the baby to come. Michelle insists on natural delivery, no epidural for her. But the pain is too much, she needs one now. She was a trooper though, lasting hours through the pain.

The specialized nurse came in, only she can administer the epidural. She tries…but fails. She tries again, but it’s not working. 45 minutes later and two full kits used, she finally gets it right. A 5-minute procedure lasted almost an hour. Matt watched in agony as needles penetrated his wife’s spine over and over and over. Blood and bruises everywhere. But the pain has gone away and she can relax now….

…but she can’t. In those 45 minutes, her body was telling her she is ready to deliver.

Less than two hours later a baby is born. A boy. Jackson. 6lbs and 5oz. He’s small, smaller than expected.

But he’s healthy.

The fear of delivery has passed, now the fear of fatherhood begins.

I read SC and Suspect's stories this morning before work, but didn't have a chance to comment on them.

Suspect, I'm glad your wife was okay after her fall and that you had a healthy baby. I can't even imagine how terrifying that ordeal must have been. As soon as you mentioned salting the sidewalks, I knew where this was headed because icy walkways and roads are a huge issue here for almost half the year, especially since the ground is so uneven. Even though I knew everything worked out fine for the three of you, it was still troubling to read about.

SC, thanks for sharing. I think I was expecting a more concrete fear from you, so it was a bit of a surprise to read something so existential. I think what you said is something that a lot of people can relate to.

Once I finish my post-work tea and take a walk to the grocery store and back, I'll be able to sit down and write my story. What I shared for that psychological study challenge are things that practically everyone knows about me anyway, but what I think I'm going to write about for this challenge is something only one other person knows. If you feel uncomfortable reading it, don't worry, it was 5 years ago and I'm definitely over it now.

“You need to find someone who is more than just a few inches taller than you, so that you're not taller than him when wearing heels. It just doesn't look right, and no guy is going to want a girl who makes him look short.”

“All you ever wear is men's clothes. What, are you going to be a transvestite now?”

“Red looks really good on you. Don't dye your hair dark again; it makes you look sickly, especially around the eyes.”

“With the good grades you get now, imagine what you could do if you put effort into anything else, instead of just spending your time playing video games.”

“Wow, those pictures are really good! You could be a real artist! Your aunt had talent like that when she was younger too. She didn't pursue it though, since there's no money in it. They're called starving artists for a reason.”

I learned the hard way that the problem with having a family that is always joking around and making brutally honest comments is that they can be hitting at hidden insecurities, and when you think about their words out of context later, they can often sound like insults. I was never directly discouraged from doing what I wanted, but those critical lines continued to add up over the years. It made me start to think that nothing I did would ever be good enough. I was being told that none of my passions would actually make me happy because they wouldn't lead to what society deemed to be a successful life. It seemed like everyone thought I was capable of so much more than what I was doing, and that it was a waste of my talents not to be pursuing something bigger.

In my group of friends, I was always the rational one. I was the voice of reason when people were upset, I remained calm when things started to come apart at the seams, and I lead the way when we suddenly found ourselves lost. Since I never let irrational or inconsequential things bother me, everyone came to me with problems to solve, but no one ever asked how I was. When I started to feel like a failure, and that I was wasting my life away, I didn't think I had anyone to turn to. So I did the worst thing possible; I suffered in silence, and tried to ignore what I was actually feeling.

Fear is not tangible, and it's not something that is easily understood. It can defy all logical reasoning, and disguise itself so that we don't even realize what it is we're truly afraid of. It doesn't matter how calm or rational you normally are, because fear is nothing if not patient and persistent, and it can build up over time if we don't address and come to terms with it. After having suffered the consequences of suppressing how I felt about my body, you'd think I would have learned my lesson, but I didn't.

What I did decide was that I was going to try and do more. I moved back home so I could save up money to finish my previously abandoned University degree without having to work a full-time job at the same time just to cover living expenses. I hate that town so much, but I thought it would be worth it if I could get my life back on track. I had been gone so long that I needed to reapply to the University, but I was accepted right away, so I thought everything was going to be fine. One of my best friends needed two new room mates, and since a mutual friend of ours needed a new place at the same time, it seemed like the timing was just perfect.

That's when I got the letter from the National Student Loans Service Centre.

I wasn't approved for the grant to cover my tuition. They couldn't justify giving me more money since I was on repayment assistance for my previous student loan the entire time I was out of school. Reading that letter was my breaking point. Everything hit me at once. I'd be trapped in that town for the rest of my life. I was a failure, and I'd always be one. The Universe didn't even want me to succeed. What was the point in even trying any more? No one even cared about me.

I was having a text conversation with my friend on Skype at the time. I had to tell him the bad news, even though I was shaking and I could barely see through the tears in my eyes. The more I explained what was going on, the more it hurt. I didn't know how to cope with these feelings I had been suppressing all my life, but I let them flow through my fingers regardless. I didn't feel relieved; I felt burdened down even more. It was inescapable. I don't know if I wasn't thinking at all, or if I was thinking too much, but I found myself in under the desk, heart pounding, with a blade in one hand, held shakily against the wrist of the other.

It wasn't the first time I'd thought about killing myself. But it was the first time I decided to talk about it. I got up from under the desk and told my friend. I even told him about the other times as well. I didn't know what to do. I kept eyeing the scissors to my left. I got a message back about a high school friend of his who had killed himself, and about the effect his death had on his friends and family. He told me about how he can't even listen to certain songs he used to love any more, because it reminds him of his friend.

Luckily, I realized that my fears and insecurities were no reason to unleash that kind of devastation on the people I loved. And it wasn't the end of the world after all, since my parents were able to pay for my tuition, and I survived working part-time while taking only a couple of classes each semester. I guess the moral of the story is not to let fear hold you back from trying something you want to do. Even if there's a chance that you might not succeed, letting fear win is not the answer.

I don't mind sharing because one thing I did learn is that pretending these issues don't exist is not healthy at all. I just hope that no one worries about me about reading that. Unlike everything else I've posted about myself, it isn't something I can laugh off just yet, but I'm seriously in a good place, and it's no longer an issue.
