Thanks Cosmic :up:. Really glad that you like Rectify and The Sopranos. Can i ask in what ways do you think The Sopranos is dated? Just curious.
I watched the first episode of Big Wolf, it's not something i'd watch now but i regret not seeing it as a kid because i would have probably loved it. Will watch four more before voting.

Oh it's nothing at all important, and it's more amusing than anything. Just little things, like stealing a truck full of CD/DVD players and having it be worth something for example haha.
If there's no protest i'm going to close these two. Set 4 has been up over a week and Topsy and Cosmic who are the two have been voting on everything so i don't see these changing and i'd like to start moving towards the second round:

My favorite "dated" thing in The Sopranos is when Chris tells Martin Scorsese that he loved Kundun.
FInished five of Big Wolf. Still the same as earlier i won't keep watching it as an adult but i regret not watching it when i was a kid because i would have loved it. Hate The Walking Dead so:

Oh, this is a really hard one! I love Parks and Rec, but when Game of Thrones is good, it's really good. GoT does have a number of bad episodes seasons though, so I'm inclined to vote Parks and Rec instead, but it's very close.

I used to get The Shield and The Wire mixed up a lot, because I'd always hear people saying really great things about both of them. But The Wire seemed to be the one that people really, really loved.
I apologize if I've already told this particular story, but I can't remember what I said about the show when I watched it for its previous match-up. For one of my university classes we had a guest lecturer come in a few times to talk about television shows, because it was his area of expertise. I later saw panels hosted by this guy at our local "sci-fi" convention (in quotes because it's more of a general geeky interest convention than specifically sci-fi) , and every time I saw him he would somehow manage to talk about his favourite show, The Wire.
This professor had shown a few isolated scenes from the series (one of which was actually in the episodes I watched to vote: the one where the kids were learning how to play Chess), and it looked pretty good to me. I think that going into it, it was built up a little too much. I watched episodes of The Shield awhile before The Wire, and I sort of instantly liked that, so I think I just assumed that I would like The Wire as well. However I just found it to be...boring. I just had little to no interest in what was happening.
OK. I think The Wire is something people may not like right away especially but i've noticed people that don't only ever say it is boring, never any other criticisms. Suppose that is just the general feeling some get.

Man I've been really bad about watching shows for this. I can't vote in any of these matches. I really need to watch The Wire though, so I can vote for Blackadder.

I did kind of like McNulty in The Wire, but that was really it. I kept looking random things up on my phone while I was watching the show, which is a bad sign because that's not something I'd normally do.
I might be inclined to give it a second shot in the future, but throughout this tournament I've happened upon enough shows that I want to continue watching that it probably won't be any time soon at all.

Television needs to either make me laugh or present me with truly compelling characters that I can't stop watching. So far this has done neither.
Unless something totally mind-blowing happens in the next two episodes (which I'll clench my teeth and get through only for the sake of Blackadder), I'll be done with this show for good.

I was not compelled by any of them. I realize it's a series premiere, but it seems a very slow start to me. Were it not for this tournament I wouldn't have any desire to keep watching. Perhaps the next two episodes will be a significant improvement, but I doubt it.

It never turns into an action series, so if you think it's slow then it's slow throughout.

I don't necessarily want or need action, but there weren't any strong personalities that stood out to me or fascinating backstories or anything to make me care about any of these people. I'm not saying it's a bad show by any means, just that there's nothing about it that appeals to me so far.

I get it. Too bad. I could watch Avon and Stringer from now till the end of time. Season 1 and 3 are two of my favorite seasons of TV ever.
Sean knows whats up :up:. The only mistake you made there was mentioning Season 3 and not 4 :p. Nah, i love 3 it's just 4 is my favourite and runs every season of The Sopranos and a few of Mad Men close as my favourite Season of a show ever.
Damn Blackadder is killing The Wire. Gonna have to PM Harry Lime, Yoda, etc, to correct this injustice :p

I've actually picked up Game of Thrones again from where i left it and i'm enjoying it again, after a two year break. Still i just don't want GOT or Breaking Bad to win because i think that would be a bit boring. I really can't think of a show that can beat Breaking Bad unless timing and the right people voting come together, we'll see.

Gonna try to get Parks and Rec watched soon so I can vote in that. I'm not enamored with GOT - aside from Tyrion and maybe Jorah - but I've kept up with it which is more than I can say for a lot of shows.

And last comment right now. I don't think this is more true about any show, even shows i prefer. I'm pretty sure HK has said something like this before even though The Wire isn't one of his favourites. The only character who had a decent role in the show that i didn't like/ didn't find interesting was Brother Mabuse or whatever his name is, and even he played a part in one of the best arcs of the show.
I think The Wire suffers a little by the voting rules here, it is certainly not just The Wire that does and i imagine some shows suffer more. The reason i think this is Omar only appears in the third episode and he doesn't really end up a crucial part until a bit later on, i think the excitement he brings could convince someone to give the show a bit more of a chance and thus they get spend more time with the other characters and might begin to see their appeal. Obviously with MV it had no chance in voting anyway going up against her favourite show but i think she would like it more than she imagines at this point. Anyway thanks for giving it a try MV.
Also Omar is only my third favourite character i just think he is clearly the most exciting.

Well we'll see what I think of this Omar character when I get to him. Either way the show has no hope of getting my vote in this round.

Really like that you included Avon. I prefer Stringer but i feel he does heavily overshadow Avon because he is more unique. Avon was an excellent character.
His conversation with Stringer about them growing up together the night before Stringer is killed which Avon played a part in, is one of the most devastating scenes in any show for me when i re watch it. So simple yet so much going on and as happy as it is it is subtly heated as they aren't getting on at that point. i think it is the #1 scene for me on how much better it becomes on a re watch.
I myself have quite a few problems with season 5 even though i still love it, it is clearly a step down for me. Although the ending is possibly my favourite of any show. Not that anything amazing happens but The Wire never did concern itself with mindblowng, what just happened scenes, so to me it was perfect, just wrapped everything up perfectly while telling you that nothing changes. Couldn't ask for anything better.
Not even sure that needed spoilered but just in case.
Season 2 is interesting because i love it, i think it is the weakest of the first four but not by much and i think it is quite a bit above Season 5. I always think the fact that i had all of the episodes ready to watch and didn't have to wait inbetween seasons to get back to Marlo and Stringer was the reason i didn't have a problem with the focus of the season. I thought that would be the same for everyone who wasn't watching as it was airing, but you weren't either right? If you weren't then there must be just some fundamental problems with that season other than the shift in focus that i don't see/realize.

I easily would've voted for Hannibal over Breaking Bad, but apparently no one else liked that show like I did haha.

That is all understandable. Although i will say The Wire is good from the start, you definitely appreciate everything a lot more when you go back but yeah it is all great. The Wire reminds me of people who complain about films just being all explosions nowadays even though they don't try anything more subtle, The Wire isn't a Breaking Bad that has a character blow himself up in a room with a dangerous drug dealer a few episodes in to get you hooked, you do have to be willing to invest some time to recognize the brilliance of it. Just a rant from a fanboy haha, i understand that there is only so many hours in a day bla bla, so a show you aren't enjoying isn't ever going to be a priority.

Absolutely. As i said i think even its biggest fans would agree with this. I remember Holden Pike saying he didn't think it started to get really good until the hunting episode in Season 2 which is a few in. I think i'd agree with him but Season 1 is just so dull, i'm still shocked (and glad) it got picked up for a second.
I find that a lot of sitcoms are that way. A lot of times you have to get into the characters personalities before the humor really starts to take over for you. I still don't love the first two seasons of either Seinfeld or Friends. The Office took me binge watching season 4 during the writer's strike before I fell in love. Now the first season is close to my favorite, but it took two shots to get there.
Season 2 is interesting because i love it, i think it is the weakest of the first four but not by much and i think it is quite a bit above Season 5. I always think the fact that i had all of the episodes ready to watch and didn't have to wait inbetween seasons to get back to Marlo and Stringer was the reason i didn't have a problem with the focus of the season. I thought that would be the same for everyone who wasn't watching as it was airing, but you weren't either right? If you weren't then there must be just some fundamental problems with that season other than the shift in focus that i don't see/realize.

Yeah, Avon is severely underrated for me. I loved him right from the beginning. Stringer ends up being the bigger personality but Avon always stuck for me. Might have just talked myself into him being 1 and Stringer being 2.
Weirdly i actually liked the first season of Friends less going back. I had seen plenty of episode on TV but it wasn't until my sister bought the boxset that i started watching them in order and i thought it was great, watching those episodes now they go down quite a bit probably because like any sitcom there's some out of character moments since the show is finding its feet, and it also has this weird mellow feel that creeps me out haha.
Seinfeld i agree with you on. Of all the shows in my top ten i think it had the shortest peak 4-6 IMO, the show really wasn't ever that consistent which was due to how experimental at the time at least it was i imagine. The first three seasons have some absolute classics but they also have these really weird boring (Honeykid quotes this part) episodes. I caught the episode in Season 3 i think with Michael Chiklis and it is just not very good, i could see what they were attempting but it just didn't work that well and the jokes weren't funny (here's another for you HK).

Actually that makes a lot of sense. I was blind watching it too, nothing was spoiled for me thankfully but i did know that Stringer and Avon came back into it because i was talking to my uncle about how much i was loving Season 1 and he did say don't get put off with Season 2 it gets back to the Barksdales after it.

I don't actually agree with this. IMO, Avon is always the bigger personality most peoples love and focus on Stringer comes from his laidback and rational side rather than anything he actually does directly, i think that's why the scene where he finally snaps at Avon is one of the most talked about non-death scenes because it is so uncharacteristic of Stringer, the guy who tried his utmost to make Avon see that revenge and rivalries should play no part in their business decisions. That and his circumstances, him going to college to learn how to be a better drug dealer is such an interesting thing alone.

This is a common complaint, even amongst the fans of the show, it's kind of sad that the show starts off very weak. Parks and Rec doesn't really lose the awkward vibe until the third season, when it starts to pick up a little more steam, the cast become more comfortable in their roles, and they add two major characters. The first season is something I've only seen once, and the second season doesn't get much play from me. Leslie is taxing until she loses the "dumb blonde, who's just happy to be there" thing and actually fills her character out.
I tried to watch GoT a couple of times and couldn't get past certain characters propensity to annoy me. Now, I contemplated skipping to the second season, but I don't think that would do me any favours in the way of continuity or understanding the characters. I'm kind of in a place where I either have to power through how awful I find Joffrey in hopes that it will get better, or just resign myself to enjoying fantasy in novel form only.

I was less bored by them, but still not really engaged with the story or the characters. Cop shows have never really been my thing.
Watched the first episode of You, Me and the Apocalypse. It was alright, i liked seeing some familiar faces like Pauline Quirke and Pam from The Office, i think the latters story in prison was my favourites. As it stands i'll more than likely vote for Bob's Burgers but i'll watch the second and third eps later before voting.

For some reason I remembered You, Me, and the Apocalypse being a half hour show. Weird. And I only saw it a couple of months ago so you'd think I'd remember it better haha.
I wasn't exactly sold on the first episode either, but found it interesting enough to keep watching. I don't remember at what episode I really fell in love with it, but I do know my favourite character gets introduced in episode 2. :)
If you're one of those people who skips the intros to shows, I should note that the bunker part of each opening is different and shows different characters/has a different voice over.
The first episode was 43 minutes. Some shows start off with a longer pilot then go down to 20-30, so that may be what it is. I'll see later.

No, I just have terrible memory. They're all 40ish minute episodes.
Watched the next two of Apocalypse, and yeah it does stay at 40+. I think it got better in those two but i still just found it alright, pretty entertaining but not something i could see myself becoming a fan of. Plus i read that there won't be a second season, so i have no intention of finishing it.

Watched the first two episodes of Daredevil. I'm actually enjoying it a lot more than I expected. I do have mixed feelings about it, though. I really like the dramatic scenes and find the characters likable, but my eyes start rolling when he gets into fights and starts doing his crazy flips or when his super senses start going.
I doubt it'll get my vote over Arrested Development, but of the shows that I've been introduced to through this tournament I've liked this one the best so far. I never would've guessed that.

I wasn't big on the first episode either. But the very end of episode 2 I was a huge fan of. Then at the end of episode 3 when we meet Kingpin, things get way more interesting and it's solid from then on.
I was also disappointed with season two, and not just because Steven S. DeKnight was not involved. Towards the end, s2 got a bit silly, which I didn't really agree with. But John Bernthal killed it as the Punisher, so it gets respect for that.
The second episode was really good actually. It won't get my vote but i'll watch the third before doing so, and i might keep watching it depending on how i feel after the third.
Watched the third episode of Daredevil; I do agree with my friend the show has gotten better with each episode, i don't love it but i'm interested in seeing where it will go so i'll probably watch the rest of it after i've finished with the other shows i've added. Even though i like it Arrested Development is in my top five so easy decision;

I voted for It's Always Sunny in round one, but that's only because I liked it slightly more than what it was up against. I watched 2 seasons of the show and just never liked it. While The Simpsons decreased in quality in recent years (or so I've heard, I haven't watched it in ages), it was good in its prime.

I'd say Sunny's longevity is at least as impressive since The Simpsons has been awful for the last 17 years, and Sunny is at least still watchable 11 seasons in, The Simpsons only made 10 IMO. Also The Simpsons has no restrictions while It's Always Sunny can't go to far out there meaning it is harder to come up with stories.

Yeah it is. It hasn't actually fallen off that much from its best seasons, while The Simpsons is a completely different (and crappy) show from Season 11.

If, in the terribly unfortunate event that Spartacus loses (I imagine that even if you like it Camo, you won't vote for it over Rectify), that would mean that I have no nominations left in the running. In that event, am I still allowed to vote in future matches?

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Daniel vs The Simpsons - Derek - Tough decision, but I went with Sunny because I am more likely to watch an episode of that than the Simpsons if both are on tv.

It didn't really click with me, but I don't know how I'd feel now. However, I do feel confidently enough that it wouldn't be something I'd enjoy more than Twin Peaks.

Anyone could vote in this i made that clear. I've got seriously bored of writing this haha, but as long as you've seen at least 3 episodes of the 40 minute-1 hour shows and 5 of the 20-30 minute shows in a match then you could vote. If you were to look through this thread you'd see me saying more than once that you can vote without nominating as long as you've seen those agreed upon amounts.

Maybe Arrested Development would have a shot as well? I don't remember what numbers it had vs its competition, but I voted for it over my own nomination in the first round, and if it wasn't up against Daredevil I likely would've voted for it over any other show in that set, apart from maybe Parks and Rec. I'd have to seriously think about that one for awhile.
As I've said a few times now, I have not seen Twin Peaks in many years. I think I'll have to borrow my friend's DVD set (because it's disappeared from Netflix again :rolleyes:) and watch a few episodes before its next match up, because I imagine that these decisions are only going to get harder.

Arrested Development has kind of struggled so far, i just checked and it won 4-2 against Life on Mars in the first round then 3-2 against Daredevil. Parks and Rec is another show that might have a chance i think, it won 6-2 against Game of Thrones.

True. I just like to make fun of Canadian Netflix because our selection is just so pathetic when you compare it to the American version haha.
It's probably a problem with every country's version of Netflix, but it seems like whenever I want to watch to movie or show that I've seen on their listing before, it's not there any more. It's very disappointing and makes me wonder why I keep using it.

Same here. I had American Netflix for like six months, it was really jarring going back to the UK one haha. The only thing i can think of that we have and the American one doesn't that i like is Community.

Oh, and 24 is another we're interested in.
Dexter, Deadwood and to a lesser extent Sons of Anarchy are favourites of mine. Game of Thrones i'm on and off with, i stopped watching it for two years then started again recently, was really into again and flew through a Season but i've went off it again. The 1st Season of 24 was really good, kind of went off it at the start of the 2nd and haven't went back yet. Not a fan of Hannibal.
Watched the first two episodes of Spartacus, sorry Cosmic i'm not enjoying it so far. I remember you saying that you didn't like the first few yourself so it is unfortunate that i have to watch them or i'd be lost. It won't get my vote against Rectify but i'll watch the third probably tomorrow, maybe i'll like it enough to give it more of a shot.

Yeah, Spartacus doesn't really get that good until episode 5 or 6 (something happens in one of those episodes that is major spoilers and it changes things considerably). After that event it's really interesting, though I don't blame people for giving up before then haha.
While I do really enjoy the last half of Season 1 and consider it really good television, Season 2 (Vengeance, not Gods of the Arena) is the real reason why I love that show. I usually recommend people skip Gods of the Arena because it was just a mini series they wrote to kill time because Andy Whitfield was dying of cancer :( :bawling: :(, and it is not necessary viewing for season 2. To me it makes more sense to save the mini-series until after War of the Damned (Season 3), because you're more invested in certain key characters at that point, allowing it to have more of an impact.

Neither had I. It's not a bad show by any means, but I just can't get into the whole zombie thing. Unless it's horror/comedy. Especially horror/comedy starring Bruce Campbell. I can get into that. But zombie drama? No thank you.

In the Flesh was on Netflix here not long after season 2 aired, but before the DVD release. Despite hearing good things about it from people whose opinion I trust, I was very hesitant to watch it because I've been sick to death of zombies since long before The Walking Dead first aired. I wasn't sold on it at first, but season 1 was only 3 episodes so I decided to at least watch those. The very end of episode 3 did get me interested though, and I gladly watched the rest of the episodes and bought both seasons on DVD as soon as they came out here.
I still haven't warmed back up to zombies though, which is why I didn't watch iZombie until this tournament. I really liked that show as well, and binge watched all the episodes (in between watching new shows for this tournament).

If literally no one else is able to vote, those of us who did vote in that match could re-vote in case one of us is fine with letting the other show go through?
Even though I voted for Fawlty Towers I could be convinced to let Rectify through instead. They were both decent shows.
If someone wants to do that, then cool it would help. I would change mine in most matches but i really want Rectify to go through so some more people might end up watching it if it goes up against one of their shows or whatever. If Topsy ended up changing hers to Fawlty i wouldn't be bothered since that is also one of my favourite shows but yeah i'm not going to change mine this time. I think it would be best that i ask about the site first before anyone changes theirs though.

Ooooh, this is a tough match up as well. I was going to start rooting for In the Flesh as the underdog winner after all my noms were out, but I like Parks and Rec too much to vote otherwise.

Tough, tough choices. Seriously, any one of those four in the matches I voted in could be the winner, and I'd be totally pleased. Same goes for Parks and Rec. I haven't seen either in the first match or In the Flesh.

Yea, I may need to watch something in the near future if I want to get a vote in this game. I was thinking Twin Peaks for this round to help save B. B., but my vote wouldn't make a difference.

I don't think I'd end up doing it. It would feel cheap just voting in 1 round the whole game to save my nomination.

Oooh, this is tough. I didn't get around to re-watching any Twin Peaks to see if I'd like it more or less now, but I have a feeling that I'd probably like The Shield a little bit more than it.

I've probably seen 3 episodes of The Sopranos but it was so long ago that I could never vote in it's match. I know I'd love it but my wife has never been interested.
Yeah, you'd definitely love it IMO. Maybe not as much as The Shield or BB but i'd be surprised if it wouldn't become a favourite.

It's weird too because my wife loves Goodfellas, Casino, The Godfather, etc.
Scorsese is definitely a big influence on the show, especially Goodfellas, Casino and Mean Streets and The Godfather is mentioned a lot.

I'm not so sure that it will but yeah you should watch more. I like every Season about the same but most think it keeps getting better til Season 4 then it goes down a bit. Been thinking about watching it again myself.

You're making me choose between one of my favourite live action comedies, and the absolute finest show ever on television. The choice is not as hard as it may seem.
I wanted to give the semi's at least a week but i've posted the matches about the site and the only non-regular who voted was Fabulous. I'll give them another 24 Hours before we move on to the final. I'm going to leave the final up for a week at least, i'll PM people to get them to vote if i have too :p

I've watched a couple more episodes of The Shield. I keep liking this show more and more. I think I should watch a couple more of the Sopranos as well to make it more of a fair fight in the next round (assuming 2 people don't come in and vote for Parks and Rec before you close these matches).
Well the final is definitely being left up for a week so just vote when you are ready. Hope you continue to enjoy The Sopranos.

Well I like what I've seen already, so the chances are high. Whether or not I'll like it more than The Shield is the real question haha.
I mostly joined this tournament in the hopes that I'd find some new shows to watch. I'd say this is mission accomplished. :cool:
I found a few as well. I Claudius would probably be my favourite.
