I had All in the Family at #7, probably too low because I haven't seen it in a while. This show was a lot of things, and I can't picture a major network airing something like it today.

Loved Flying Circus when I was young, but it didn't make my list. It's been too long.

My list-

1. Survivor
2. The Shield
3. Saturday Night Live
5. Married with Children
7. All in the Family
23. Cheers

Looking for 2 more

7. "The Larry Sanders Show" (99)
8. "Cheers" (35)

Only five of my remaining dozen will place, now. Oh, well. Seven really great shows aren't gonna make it.

Funny Clip!^

I had Monty Python Flying Circus at #10.

I found out about that show when I was a kid by flipping the channels. I couldn't believe the PBS channel had something so cool on it! I only understand about half of what they said due to their strong British accents, but it was still the funniest thing I'd seen.

We always watched All in the Family and Maude and The Jefferson. Those were all great shows.

22. The Office (U.S 2005- 2013)

http://i57.tinypic.com/353e542.jpg

Theme Song (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b9GilKnpiv0)

Quote: Close your eyes. Picture a convict. What's he wearing? Nothing special, baseball cap on backwards, baggy pants... he says something ordinary like... 'yo, thats shizzle.' Okay. Now slowly open your eyes again. Who are you picturing? A black man? Wrong. That was a white woman. Surprised? Well, shame on you. ~ Michael Scott

http://i62.tinypic.com/zb9na.jpg

A mockumentary style sitcom based off the original UK version.

Cast connections: The actors that played Jim and Ryan went to high school together and the actors portraying Andy and Kevin went to a Christian school together in Georgia.

Steve Carell: He hadn't watched the British version of the show before being offered the role of Michael. He was also worried about just be copying Ricky Gervias and not make the role of Michael Scott is own.

Pam's engagement ring: Jenna Fischer kept the ring and has been seen wearing it in television appearances. Even after the series was over.

More than actors: Both Mindy Kaling and B.J Novak did more than act in The Office. They wrote, produced and dated.

Phyllis and Creed's former life: She was once a burlesque performer and a NFL cheerleader. She was also the casting director of The Office before they wrote her part specifically for her. Creed was a member of the band The Grass Roots.

Quote: “I’m not a psychopath, Anderson. I’m a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research.”-Sherlock

Theme Song (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uzyKkKB7mT4)

A British series with a contemporary take on the Sherlock Holmes stories.

http://i61.tinypic.com/id86lx.jpg

Preparation: To prepare for the role Benedict Cumberbatch read every original Conan Doyle story.

Spock: Watson refers to Holmes as "Spock" in the show. Leonard Nimoy has also played Sherlock Holmes and Benedict Cumberbatch played Khan in Star Trek: Into The Darkness.

Sherlock Holmes is a Chinese gay icon: Although his sexuality has not been confirmed to be gay, many Chinese people still regard him as a gay icon.

Molly Hooper: The role was only to be a one time thing to illustrate Holmes's lack of social skills and romantic cluelessness. The producers expanded the role because they were so impressed with Louise Brealey's performance.

I've only seen The Office on the back of airplane seats, you know those little TVs. Being too cheap to pay for the sound, I've watched it in silent mode....All I can say is the filming technique used on the show is odd. If you seen the show you know what I mean.

The Office is way too low! :D

Was my #1. One of my favorite things in the universe, if not my favorite thing.

http://media1.giphy.com/media/133W2afB8xSXAY/giphy.gif

Helped me out a lot when I was recovering from my mental breakdown, so it's a very close show to me. See, I have schizophrenia and social anxiety (which anyone on here who knows me knows that), and while I was recovering from both (err... when my social anxiety was at it's peak and I was overcoming it as well as recovering from my breakdown), I turned to The Office to keep me company. You don't know how important that was for me. Not just the humor, which kept my spirits up, but feeling like I was part of this group of people all of whom I loved dearly. I watched the entire series all the way through, twice, while I was recovering.

http://cdn02.cdnwp.celebuzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/15/the-office-5.gif

I even enjoy the not-as-great seasons without Michael, even though there is definitely something lacking without his presence. He is, without a doubt, my favorite character in history.

I was planning to write something longer but I'm installing some very important software right now and that's where my mind is at. Just know I f*cking love that show like nothing else.

Sherlock was my number 6. When I first heard about the show, I had my reservations. A modern day Sherlock Holmes? Starring that weird looking Benedict Cumberwhatever? Yeah, I don't know about that. Thankfully after some insistence by my friend Funny Face, I gave it try. Instant love. The stories are intriguing, the dialogue is witty and engaging and Cumberbatch and Freeman have wonderful chemistry.

They're both pretty good; I think Sarah probably voted for both.

She voted for neither. Of course, that doesn't mean she doesn't like them. ;)

I had The Office at 16. I hated it at first and thought it was a hateful little show. I think maybe three or four episodes in I started to realize it wasn't so hateful and in fact, could be really sweet. I think it was the episode where Pam is talking to the camera about the house she dreamed of having as a child, but is really taking about her art, and states to cry that had me wanting to dig further into the show.

Michael Scott is a great character. I love how accidentally successful he is and the glimpses behind the goofy exterior.

I'm also a big Pam and Jim fan. I hated it in the final season when we see them going through all the marital trouble. I know it's realistic and I know all marriages go through troubles, but I didn't exactly watch the show for a healthy dose of reality.

My favorite character? Stanley. Stanley cracks me up and my favorite Stanley moments are when he cracks up.

My all time favorite moment is when Michael buys Pam's painting of the building the office is in. Anyone who doesn't think the show has any depth didn't see that episode.

Getting down to the good stuff, now!

When Star Trek :TNG was on, I was a die-hard fan. over the years, I have sort of gotten away from the show, although there are a few TNG episodes that are probably some of the best Star Trek content ever created, especially Inner Light and Chain of Command. On this list, I only voted for the original series. That said, I have grown to like Voyager a hell of a lot. The production design is darker, and once Kes leaves and Seven shows up, I think the character set is a bit tighter than TNG overall. Janeway is no Picard, but she becomes a more complex (and more frustrating at times) character that Mulgrew played as somewhat flawed, which made her less of a Mary Sue.

In fact, that is one of my big issues with TNG these days when I try to watch it, they have a couple of crew members like Wesley Crusher that are just a bit too well-rounded to seem like real people. Troi, Alexander, Luaxana, Beverly Crusher...all fairly weak characters when I watch the show now. Voyager is also the most Star Trek of them all, with a ship catapulted into unknown space, forced to wend its way back to familiar space without Federation intervention - the best concept for any of the series, IMO. That said, Voyager has some real stinkers to go with some brilliant stuff as well, so it didn't make the list.

20. Dexter (2006 - 2013)

http://i59.tinypic.com/2u88cuo.jpg

Theme Song (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iZQrkLhSgpY)

Quote: "I shouldn't even be here. Rita will be devastated if I'm arrested. Her husband was a crack head and her boyfriend's a serial killer. It's kind of hard not to take that personally." - Dexter

http://i60.tinypic.com/2wn084j.jpg

A drama series about a blood splatter analyst for the Miami police department. He is also secretly a serial killer that hunts down criminals.

Origin: The series is based off a series off a book, "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. The book is a series as well, but only the first season follows the book storyline.

Deb and Dexter: Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter play brother and sister on the show, but they were married for a time in real life.

Plastic: Dexter had to stop wrapping his victims in so much plastic because the actor's skin couldn't breathe and it became too dangerous.

The Trinity Killer: He was played by John Lithgow and based on the BTK killer. This is Lithgow's second time on the list for being a main character. If you count guest starring then it's his third. He was on one episode of Frasier.

Dexter was my 2nd...

I've been very generous because basically only season 1, 2 and 4 are really worthy of that number 2 spot. Still, the other seasons had its moments here and there and Michael C. Hall as Dexter is great in all seasons and furthermore he really showed improvement on his acting abilities in some of the later seasons as well.

Dexter was also the first tv show I ever followed and the show and characters will always have a special place in my heart. So no matter how bad it became I just can't help how much I really liked about the show.

Has anyone read the books? Are they any good?

I read the first couple of books. The first season doesn't quite follow the book as a certain character that dies in the book lives on in the show, while a character that lives on in the book dies in the show.

The first book is quite good and the second was good, too, but from what I've read about them, the later books take quite a supernatural turn that doesn't appeal to me and wasn't part of the show.

Dexter kicks ass. My girlfriend and I got away from the show after season 4, as the quality took a dip, but the first four seasons were riveting. We will probably finish it off at some point, but the chatter about the abysmal finale and the apparent drop in quality in later seasons sent us off looking for something else to watch!

I had Dexter at #16.

I liked Dexter but feel exactly the same about the quality drop off, although I stuck it out until the finale. The final season in particular was embarrassing when compared to how the show started.

I read a review somewhere which summed it up perfectly - As the show went along the creators fell in love with their character way too much.

Maybe I'll give them a try then. I'd probably get to the books faster than I would the show.

Theme Song (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SCQGnVrTsAM)

Quote: I get my ya-yas from Ikea. You have to put them together yourself, but they cost a little less. ~ Chandler

Longing running popular sitcom about a group of friends living in New York.

http://i59.tinypic.com/2lic6jk.jpg

Spin-offs: Joey

Casting: Courtney Cox was offered the role of Rachel, but she wanted to play Monica because she preferred her strong character.

The role of Ross was written specifically for David Schwimmer.

Jon Cryer and Jon Favreau both auditioned for the part of Chandler. Mathew Perry had another sitcom but it didn't get picked up. If it would have one of the two above would have played Chandler.

Salary: In the beginning each were being payed about $22.00 an episode. In season two they all had slightly different salaries. They were the first cast to go as a group and demand a pay increase and that each one make the same amount.

Mad About You: Lisa Kudrow was already playing Ursula on the series Mad About You. In order that Kudrow could play both roles, Phoebe and Ursula became identical twins. Helen Hunt even makes an appearance on Friends and mistakes Phoebe for Ursula.

Friends and Dexter make 10 from my list, i had them at 25 and 9 respectively. Friends could've been alot higher, but imo seasons 8-10 were just so weak especially on a rewatch that it fell way down my list. Still it's the perfect show to just sit back and watch when your feeling lazy.

Like some others have said it was qute difficult to decide where to place Dexter because of the dropoff in quality after Season 4. 1-4 was without a doubt the peak of the show with 3 as the clear weakest out of them, unlike some others though i thought Seasons 5 and 7 were pretty decent, 6 was terrible and 8 came close to ruining the entire show. No idea what the writers were thinking, having Deborah and fall in love with Dexter, and all of that crap about the Therapist inventing the code instead of Harry .

Season 1 was my favourite by quite some way. As some would have guessed by my avatar the Ice Truck Killer is one of my favourite villains, despite his relatively short time on the show. I'd also say Dexter is at his most interesting here, before he'd began to develop feelings and drift away from what Harry taught him. Not to mention the best flashbacks on the show.

Next up would be both 2 and 4. I can't quite decide what i like better, while Trinity is a fantastic villian; i actually felt that Season 2 had the better sidestories. With the excellent new characters, in Lila and Lundy, as well as Doakes at his best. The rehab and Bay Harbour Butcher storylines were incredibly well executed imo.

The best thing about the show was that while each season was first and foremost about the hunt for a killer, each season also had a main focus on Dexters development. Season 1 had Dexter learning his true identity, 2 had him figuring out whether he could change, 3 with whether he could have a true friend that could know who he is, 4 with him trying to figure out if he could juggle a family with being a killer, etc.

Also just a little correction to your John Lithgow fact, he also played Barneys Dad on HIMYM, so he was actually in four ;).

Of the other two i've never watched Sherlock. The Office didn't make my list, but i think i'm one of the few Brits that preferred the US version. I think it was Sean or Swan who said he might prefer it because he was introduced to it first, possibly that's also the case with me.

19. Friends (1994 - 2004)

I like "Friends" a lot, but it didn't make my list. I think it's just a case of overload with this show. It's in reruns on so many channels, that I've seen every episode numerous times. I bought the DVDs, but I rarely watch them because I can always find multiple episodes airing on at least one of the channels around here.

Not that I'm not prone to making mistakes, but in this case I didn't. I'm only counting shows that made the list so far, not all of his tv show guest appearances. :)

I was one of the people to have Friends at number #2. I've watched Friends for a major part of my life taking a year or so off every once in awhile when I get burnt out. I always come back though. It's a funny show with character that are familiar and endearing. I don't imagine I'll ever stop watching Friends.

The Office was my #5. There is only one comedy I rank ahead of it, and there were moments during its run when I thought it would over take it. The first five seasons are incredibly consistently hilarious. There is not one episode that I don't like in that stretch. It is one of three shows that comes up for me on at the very least a weekly basis. It is always because somebody does something that reminds me of a moment or character that makes me bore my friends, family, or co-workers with another anecdote. I could literally post hundreds of quotes from this show that make me laugh as much as the next one. I don't have the time and you don't have the patience, so I will do a top ten episodes with my favorite moment from each.

10: The Dundies S02 E01

Tons of Michael being Michael so I think my favorite part comes when a couple guys at the bar start making fun of Michael and the crew starts chanting for more dundies despite their hate for them. Its a he may be an idiot but he is our idiot moment. The Office has a few of those.

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x369/seancriswell/dundies.jpg

9: Niagra S06 E04

I am revealing my soft side here, but that's okay. Still plenty of Michael's antics but this one is about the wedding. I am not ashamed to say I love the dance montage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJd9l-7Jp_M

8: A Benihana Christmas S03 E10

The Office has a few great Christmas episodes but my favorite is when Michael gets dumped by his girlfriend after photo shopping himself into her ski trip photo that was taken with her ex and her children. Hard to top that moment. Jim calls it "a bold move".

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x369/seancriswell/benihana.jpg

7: The Client S02 E07

One of my favorite things about the character of Michael is that he is the greatest salesman ever. It shows that there is an actual reason why he reached the position he did and somehow makes up for a lot of his deficiencies when it comes up. This is the first episode I really remember it being show cased and I didn't see it coming.

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x369/seancriswell/theclient.jpg

6: The Injury S02 E12

This is generally considered one of the great episodes of the series. My favorite moment is at the beginning when Michael is trying to get Pam to come get him because he "burned" his foot. She won't and Michael is yelling don't send Dwight while Dwight is already speeding out of the parking lot. We see him hit a pole, get out of the car and throw up on his hood, only to jump back in and speed off to "save" Michael. Fantastic epsiode.

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x369/seancriswell/injury.jpg

5: Dinner Party S04 E09

Again a great opening sets everything else up. Michael gets his dinner party together by pretending corporate has forced them all to work late. He makes a fake phone call to corporate and tells them we are not working. He then invites Jim and Pam to dinner because they have no excuse. This episode is a great show case for crazy Jan.

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x369/seancriswell/dinnerparty.jpg

4: Stress Relief S05 E13

Nothing in this series made me laugh as hard as this opening. I was literally crying.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BignPBV32Sk

3: Sexual Harassment S02 E02

The great thing about this episode is that it is an absolute show case for Michael saying inappropriate things so here is just one example:

" Times have changed a little. And even though we're still a family here at Dunder Mifflin, families grow. And at some point, the daddy can't take a bath with the kids anymore. I am upper management, and it would be inappropriate for me to take a bath with Pam. As much as I might want to. "

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x369/seancriswell/sexual.jpg

2: Fun Run S04 E01

This is the episode that got me hooked on this show. I laughed so much at Michael making a charity for rabies as a result of him hitting Meredith with his car that I went back and started watching the series from the beginning. This episode is non stop laughs for me but the moment when Michael is spouting the danger of rabies before the run begins, with Darryl playing with a squirrel in the back ground is absolutely amazing.

http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x369/seancriswell/funrun.jpg

1: Diversity Day S01 E02

If you haven't watched The Office, start with this episode. If you think Michael is a racist idiot after watching, maybe this show isn't for you. If you think he is socially awkward, has zero self awareness, and is culturally ignorant then keep going because you will probably love this character and show as much as I have grown to.

Friends was at its peak when I was marooned for a year doing a post grad away from home and new wife, living in Uni halls as a 23 year old alongside a crowd of teenagers. The girls all loved Friends and forced us to watch the thing in our communal lounge.

I turned to drink.

It probably wasn't the show's fault but I've not been able to watch an episode since. :p

I liked Cougar Town. Terrible and misleading title, which the show went on to mock, but once it gets to season 3 I start to lose interest.

Love Friends. Love, love, love, love, love Friends. I'm the third of those who had it at #2 on their list and this is the first thing that's come up that got the points I meant it to have. :D

The best comedy show? Maybey not. The funniest comedy show? Probably not. My favourite comedy show? By a mile. Even with the last couple of seasons being a bit weak (especially the last which wasn't supposed to happen anyway) this is among my ultimate comfort watching. I can put pretty much any episode on at any time and I'm good with it. It was on for 10 years and, in the UK at least, it's been on multiple times every day for the last 10 years and I watched a good number of those repeats before I put them all on dvd... Then bought the 15th anniversary boxset. I've watched them every night since and I still watch the occasional repeat on tv. I adore this programme.

A little sad it's here. I thought it'd be top 20, but I hoped for top 10. :(

Friends is my all time favorite comfort sitcom as well. I think The Office is funnier and Seinfeld more clever, but Friends appeals to me no matter what mood I'm in and it never grates on me or becomes too obnoxious if I'm in the wrong mood.

There are so many great moments from each character. Ross and "pivot Pivot! Cracks me up every time. It's such a simple thing, but I think the fact that Friends had such a simple easy humor is what makes it so great and so darn watchable.

Joey's reaction to the turkey on the head is priceless as is Monica being cool with Chandler's supposed love of shark porn. That was funny.

Ross was the most annoying character. It's funny that David Schwimmer was the only one with a character written specifically for him, but I think he is the only one that the character may have been better served being played by someone else. Not that I don't like Ross, I do, but there were elements of his character that someone else may have done a better job with.

I can't see anyone else being Phoebe, Monica, Rachel, Joey and especially Chandler. Jon Cryer? Blerg.

I give a lot of credit to Mathew LeBlanc. I'm not usually a fan of characters in the Joey realm, but LeBlanc made Joey really easy to like.

Ross just got less goofy as the seasons progressed and when he isn't as goofy he tends towards being whiny.

What I liked was that it plays out like a soap opera but only with much more realism and light intelligent humor. I think most people can find a bit of themselves in one of the 6 friends. I didn't vote for it as I didn't have room on my list. But it's worthy of a top 10 finish.

Pretty glad Friends is this low. It definitely had its moments, and was very funny early on, but it really does lose a ton of steam and the fact that they exhausted nearly all of the romantic combinations available to them before calling it quits is just a massive creative failure. I'll always think of individual moments a lot more fondly than the show as a whole.

18. The Twilight Zone (1959 -1964)

http://i61.tinypic.com/1214gut.jpg

Theme Song (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-b5aW08ivHU)

Quote: There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Anthology series created by Rod Serling. It was a series of unrelated stories of the supernatural, psychological horror and science fiction usually ending with a twist.

The Twilight Zone became a franchise including a film, comic books, a radio show, magazine among other things.

Twilight Zone firsts: It was the first show to picture what a nuclear blast might be like in the episode" Time Enough At Last"

It was the first to mention fighting in Vietnam in the episode "In Praise of Pip".

It was among the first to feature black actors.

The Sixth Dimension: Rod Serling originally made up the sixth dimension to use for the opening narration. When a producer asked him what the fifth dimension was he responded, "I don't know, isn't there five?" He then changed it to "There is a fifth dimension"

William Shatner/ John Lithgow connection: Both actors play the part of the man having a nervous breakdown that sees a gremlin on a plane. Shatner in the show and Lithgow in the film. They do a spoof of it on the show 3rd Rock when Shatner, who plays the Big Giant Head, mentions seeing something on the wing on a plane. Lithgow's character replies, "Hey, that happened to me!"

It is an episode that has spoofed on many shows including a Simpson's Treehouse of Horror episode.

Robert McCord: Other than Rod Serling, he was the only actor to appear in all of the seasons.

Ross is, probably, the most physical character when it comes to comedy, so it's not a surprise that I liked him least. That said, over the last few months, I've started to prefer him to Rachel. Those two have always been my least favourite characters, though. I prefer the other four (plus of combo of Joey/Chander) much more than either of them,. Least interesting, least funny and most annoying characrers IMO.

My favorite Friends moment is when they are clearing out the apartment above them. It had belonged to an old man who lived alone. He left them his belongings, most of it's junk and is being tossed. They find the man's school yearbook and it's about to be tossed in the trash. Later Chandler looks at the yearbook, as says something like 'people wrote some nice things about him, I think I'll hang on to this.'...That one really touched me, I think about it to this day.

I really like that episode too. I think that episode is probably why I identify with Chandler so much.

I haven't said anything about The Twilight Zone. I've seen a few episodes here and there. Mostly from people who were big fans of the show. I liked them and wish there was something similar on tv now.

I like the film and I've read a couple of the comics that were interesting.

I love "The Twilight Zone", but it just barely missed my list. (I had to double-check my list, because I was sure that I included it, but apparently I didn't.)

http://i62.tinypic.com/10xzl9w.jpg

Theme Song (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j5bsytSl8X0)

Quote: Is everybody happy? Cried the Sergeant looking up
Our hero feebly answered yes, and then they stood him up
He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die!
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die!
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die!
He ain't gonna jump no more!

The risers wrapped around his neck, connectors cracked his dome
Suspension lines were tied in knots around his skinny bones
The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die!
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die!
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die!
He ain't gonna jump no more!

He hit the ground, the sound was SPLAT, his blood went spurting high
His comrades then were heard to say, A HELL OF A WAY TO DIE!
He lay there rolling round in the welter of his gore
He ain't gonna jump no more! ~ East Company song

Based on a book by the same title and produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. It follows the Easy Company during Word War II from jump training until the war's end.

http://i62.tinypic.com/16awe8i.jpg

Pyrotechnics: More were used by the third episode than used in the entire Saving Private Ryan movie.

Boot camp: The actors had to train every day starting at 5:00 am. For approximately sixteen hours a day they had to do things such as calisthenics, parachute jump training and weapon training.

David Schwimmer: he makes the second actor to have back to back shows on the list. The first was Mila Kunis. Friends was on hiatus while this was filmed, so he essentially did both roles back to back as well.

Roles: There were 500 speaking parts and 2,000 extras.

More than Das Boot? I was young and God knows my memory is almost non existant of it, but the overriding feeling I have of it is a huge, overblown Hollywood mess.

Band Of Brothers is fantastic and, if I'd been voting on quality and not what I love, it may well've made my list. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone and everyone who thought they'd be interested as well as asking people who aren't to give it a go. Also, don't let David Schwimmer's appearance put you off. Because of this, he's effective at proportion to the amount of certainty he can project. Certain linguistic anthropologists think that religion is a language virus that rewrites pathways in the brain. Dulls critical thinking. ~ Detective Rustin Cohle

A drama crime series about two detectives searching for a serial killer in Louisiana using multiple time lines over a period of seventeen years.

It is developed as an anthology series and will have a different cast and story each season.

In one season it has won five Emmys.

Networks: Unlike the other show in this entry, networks were fighting for this show. HBO won.

I haven't seen "Mad Men", but I gave it + rep because it's one of my Mom's favorite shows. (It's probably tied for her #1 with "Downton Abbey".) She even bought the special Barbie dolls of the main characters from "Mad Men". She keeps trying to get me to watch it, but I don't think it's my type of show.

I tried watching the first few episodes of "True Detective" because it got great early reviews, but I just couldn't seem to get into the show.

I had True Detective as my no. 21. Surprised me when I thought about including it as it was still quite new when I made the list. Given all the things I've since thought about that I've missed off the list , it'd prob drop off the end if I made the list today but it was a compelling series, very enjoyable.

Mad Men was my #3. I can't believe the number of detractors it has on here. Every single thing about it is perfectly conceived with the exception of one character who doesn't take up a lot of space anyways. It blows any drama that had to try and find 25 stories a year for its characters out of the water, and is among the best of the new form of TV as well.Gandalf says it seems way too high, I say it is a travesty it wasn't top five. Mad Men, I don't know. I went through the first seasons pretty fast, then suddenly stopped when season 6 aired and Don seemed to be treading familiar waters.

I have heard a couple critics make that point about season 6. I thought that was the whole point of season 6. Although I was watching Don fall into the same habits as previously, it still never felt repetitive to me. His progression away from Megan felt so natural. She never felt like a soul mate or someone who was going to tame him. She always felt like the new car that he would eventually grow tired of. Like how I imagine his relationship with Betty probably was at first.

Camo

Mad Men was my number three. In my eyes it's pretty much the perfect TV Show, while i obviously prefer the two i have above it; if i'm going by quality rather than enjoyment Mad Men would have been my number 1.

It has hands down the best Cast of Characters, of any show imo. Don Draper is my favourite ever TV Character, which is really surprising considering how unlikable he is. It's mostly a combination of how, cool, witty, charming, smart, funny, cunning, and most of all how downright self-destructive he is. Joan and Peggy are also two of my top Female characters ever. Joans transformation from essentially the office bimbo to Partner in the company, was extremely well executed. Hendricks played it to a tee, from Rogers mistress to the strong, confident businesswoman shown today. Peggy has also had a similar journey, to think that she'd move from Dons assistant to essentially the Female Don, was also well done. Her relationship with Don is imo the best written and most complex in the show. I feel like Joan and Peggy are great representation of Womens growing role in society during the 60s.

Something that most shows like Mad Men fail at imo, is effective humour. Not the case at all in this show, i feel like that's the entire reason Roger was conceived, the guy has me in stiches no doubt one of the funniest characters on TV. The scene when Don constantly challenges him to race until he vomits, was hilarious even though i'm not sure it was intended to be. Also this scene with Roger on LSD, nearly killed me. :D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpWlKCfSPcU

Honestly there's a tonne more to say about this fantastic show, but i feel like i'll end up accidentally giving a scene by scene description if i carry on :p. At this point i still haven't watched Season 7 part 1 because i wanted to wait for the second part, so that's something to look forward too :D.

Only watched the first four episodes of True Detective, and while i liked it alot i think this is way too high for an eight episode show. In my mind it's a joke that it's finished above shows like Mad Men, and a few others even ones i don't particularly like. I mean what if the Second Season is nowhere near as good, something that i think is highly possible? Would everyone still have it so high?

My List:

3.Mad Men
5.Sons of Anarchy
6.Community
7.It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

14. Lost (2004 - 2010)

Theme Song (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L7PVvcKewKw)

http://i58.tinypic.com/2ikayjp.jpg
Quote: Locke: Where do you get electricity?
Ben: We have two big hamsters running around in this giant wheel in our secret underground lair.

A science fiction mystery series about a group of survivors that crash onto an island.

Lost plane: Lost was an extremely expensive show to produce. The plane alone cost 10 million. They didn't have time to build a plane set, so they bought a real one and flew it to the island.

Bits of the plane were used as percussion for the show's intro.

Character's names: Most of the characters name reference theologians and scientists. Locke for example was an influential person in the Age of Enlightenment.

Jack: most Losties already know that he was originally meant to die the first episode. But did you know Michael Keaton was originally cast as Jack? He backed out of the part when he learned that Jack survives as he didn't want to be apart of a long running show.

Those lying producers: Producers told fans that there was a clue in the first episode that hadn't been discovered. They were just having fun; there was no hidden clue.

BBC sitcom set in a fictional hotel.

Origin: the Monty Python crew stayed at a hotel where John Cleese became fascinated by the owners behavior. He found him the rudest man he had ever met.

The hotel owner criticized Terry Gilliam for switching his fork from one hand to the other while eating among other rude things.

The idea for Fawlty Towers arose from this visit.

Oops: John Cleese nearly knocked Andrew Sachs out with a frying pan. The actor had made an unexpected move during rehearsal. He had a headache for two days.

I knew that everything wouldn't be tied up neatly at the end, so I wasn't too bothered. How could it really? The writers had already admitted that they were coming up with stuff as they went along. That was part of the fun.

I got into it season two, but I went back and watched all of season one right before then watched it as it came on tv. At the time I worked with people that were really into it and we all couldn't wait to talk about it the next day.

14. Lost (2004 - 2010)
13. Fawlty Towers (1975 - 1979)

I didn't watch "Lost" during it's original run, but due to the great reviews of the show, after it ended, I bought the whole series on DVD, and watched it as a long marathon. Like most fans of the show, I loved most of it, but I was a bit disappointed by the ending.

I didn't include it on my list, but I'm not surprised to see it appear this high up on the list here.

I've never seen "Fawlty Towers", but it doesn't seem like my type of humor.

That's basically the same reason why it didn't make my list. It's not the type of show that I would watch multiple times. I've seen the whole series once, but I'm not likely to ever sit down and watch it again, or even watch any of the episodes in reruns.

That's the reason why several very good shows didn't make my list. If a show isn't something that I would watch over and over again, it probably failed to make my list, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't a good show, or even a great show.

Both were on my list, i had Lost at 10 and Fawlty Towers at 19. I think Swan and Godoggo put it perfectly, i loved the ride and at one point i was pretty much obsessed with it. Also even though i wasn't crazy about the ending myself i thought it was pretty much the best we could hope four. The first two seasons in particular were so perfect, imo it dropped off in quality after that but was stilll very good. Just thinking about it actually makes me want to rewatch it :indifferent:.

Fawlty Towers was just unbelievably funny, i always remember searching the TV Guide for UK Gold when i was a kid in the hope that it was on even though i had seen every episode multiple times. It really is a shame that the show was so short :(.

3.Mad Men

I'd probably have had Fawlty Towers in a top 30 or 40 but it didn't make my 25.

I didn't have "Fawlty Towers" on my final list, but it is one of the best comedies of all time, each of the precious dozen episodes a perfectly crafted two act chaotic farce. Not sure how it placed above "Monty Python's Flying Circus" on such a poll, but whatevs. And as much as I loved "True Detective", I wouldn't put any show on my list that has only had one season. What if the next season is dreadful?

Just realizing that the five left from my list that will make it are all likely top ten, and may be darn close to being the actual top five.

I suppose it depends whether a second season is imminent or whether one season is all there's ever going to be. I wouldn't downgrade a one season shown because a second season might have been terrible if they had made one. Speaking of one season shows, still waiting for Firefly to show up (possibly in vain...)

Yes, I meant in its first season when more are coming. A show that was prematurely killed or that was designed to be only one season long is obviously different. There will be at least one more full season of "True Detective" so, for me, the jury is still out.

^This^

Surely all this was foreshadowed when

He started to fall for Megan? I thought that was the point? That he'd become a cliche and was dating/marrying his secretary. It was only ever going to end one way and season 6 was when they pulled the trigger

i guess that means no friday night lights.
Was FNL really that popular? If it was going to show up I'd have thought it'd be long ago. I really liked the show and I'd happily watch it all again, but it never felt like something that had anything more than a devout, but small, following.

No time for Lost (sorry) but I didnt' stick with it for long and I've said plenty of times how I went with that, so I won't bother.

I'm really surprised to see Fawlty Towers this high up. I thought it'd make the list, but top 50, maybe top 40 at best. And that would be relying on lots of high votes mainly from the Brits and/or Commonwealth countries. As it hadn't shown, I thought it hadn't made it.

For those unaware, this is a stone cold classic in the UK. I can't remember a time when this wasn't considered the best of its type and, even though I'm not much of a fan, I can always sit and watch any episode when it's on because they're so familiar to me. A bit like Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. If this had just been a UK vote, I'd have expected this in the top 10 and nothing Monty Python would've come close to it.

I had Lost at Number ONE.

My favorite show of all time. That said, it is most certainly flawed, but no other show has inspired me to go read about science, history, philosophy, and many other subjects, some of them pretty far-fetched or perhaps horse ****, but interesting nonetheless. Sure, an argument can be made that it was just a hodge-podge of half-baked philosophical ideas, myth, legend, with plenty of comedy and pop culture nonsense interspersed throughout, but hey, I guess I find all that stuff tremendously entertaining.

Make no mistake, I am not claiming Lost is the best show ever made. Far from it. If there is one show that perhaps bit off more than it or its audience could chew, it's Lost, but man, what a ride.

The much maligned ending was just fine for me. As the old cliche says, 'the point of a journey is not to arrive, but the journey itself'.

And Lost is one hell of a journey, folks. From the statue of Tawaret to the Dharma Initiative to a visit to the Lamppost and through the Looking Glass, Lost was a culmination of everything that had come before. At its heart, underneath all the mythology and culture tropes, Lost was a human story, just as flawed and wonderful in its own way as we are.

I'm not surprised these two are so high . Buffy doesn't appeal to me but I perfectly well see its appeal. It's well made and well written.

South Park is funny, rude and anarchic , a perfect programme for when you're growing up - I suspect given the age demographic here that a lot of people who love it watched it in their adolescent years. It performs the same sort of role that Monty Python did in my generation - most adults thought it was extremely silly and that's what made us love it even more.

The Buffy club knows how I feel about the first season and a half of that show. I like the characters but the writing and plot lines are not compelling enough to keep me watching.

It used to be my favorite show of all time back when it was on, and I was pretty obsessed with it. I have seen the show in its entirety perhaps 3-4 times since the 90s, and over the years, my favorite seasons, themes, and characters have changed. For instance, as the show aired, I recall being annoyed by Season 5, but after I last watched the series, season 5 is probably one of my favorites. A groundbreaking show in many ways, and beneath its goofy surface, the show was witty and sometimes quite intelligent. The Body is still one of the best hours of TV ever produced, and i also like Restless a whole hell of a lot.

I didn't vote for South Park.

Don't mention the war.

Buffy was my #7 choice, though that's about where my list was just left as it was because I'd have never been happy with it had I tried to place everything perfectly. I love Buffy. I think Angel might be better, but I'll never love it like I do Buffy. It's the wonderful characters, the chemistry between the actors and the great writing which set this apart from all its contempories.

I've not watched South Park regularly since season 2 or 3, but the odd episodes that I do see are usually OK and, as others have already pointed out, when it works, it really hits the spot.

LOST and Fawlty Towers seem too low, they're two of my very favourite TV shows. The former was probably the first serious show that I really got into, I remember my parents watched the first season and I saw bits and bobs, so I watched it all myself and became hooked, they stopped after a couple of seasons as they got tired of it. I don't think the ending is great, but I don't think it's as bad as everyone thinks either, if you ignore the alternate universe stuff, then I am fine with most of it.

In fact, I would say now that Twin Peaks and The Sopranos are my top two TV shows. But when it comes to favourites, I can't say anything would be ahead of LOST apart from them. There are so many great moments in it.

The opening scene from season two was just amazing, I remember sitting there thinking WTF is happening.

SPOILERS

And the 'Not Penny's Boat' moment is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in anything ever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-KaR5NUrws

And then there was Ben murdering Jacob.

There were so many fantastic characters, Ben has to be one of the greatest villains ever created, and I absolutely loved characters like Desmond and Charlie. The show was about much more than 'making sense', and there was always going to be strange mythology involved that didn't make sense, so I thought the explanation where we went back to Jacob and the Man in Black made sense.

I'm going to pretend the last two entries didn't happen

Why?
Just being a hater ;) Both shows are far to high IMO but MO doesn't really matter. That's what the people voted for.

South Park was my number 2. So glad too see it this high :D. I really had no clue of the thoughts on it here, so anywhere from 40 to top 10 wouldn't have surprised me. Instead of just ranting about why i like it, i'm going to steal Seans idea and post a top 10 episodes in a little while.

I will say one thing though, in my opinion South Park has been able to enjoy a much higher level of consistency than similar shows like The Simpsons (you'd be lucky to find more than one above average Episode per season since Season 10). Mainly because it decided to change the initial formula of the show when it started to get stale. The first 3 SP seasons are completely unrecognizable to any of the later ones.

The development of certain characters has been exceptional as well. For instance Randy was largely a boring side character only brought out when a parent was needed for the story for the first few Seasons. Ever since Fingerbang (Season 4), he's become one of the most hilarious and popular characters on the show. Same goes for Butters if you watch his first big appearence in Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub (Season 3), it's clear how far he's come.

Also Randy Marsh is my hero :D.

Buffy is a very good show. It just barely missed my list, but the last few seasons made me decide to leave it off in the end.

My List:

2.South Park
3.Mad Men
5.Sons of Anarchy
6.Community
7.It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
9.Dexter
10.Lost
12.Deadwood
13.The Shield
16.Batman TAS
17.Only Fools And Horses

Top 10 South Park Episodes (kinda)

http://i60.tinypic.com/21alnqr.jpg

I decided to steal Seans idea, but as i'm sure was the case with him i could do a list tomorrow with 10 different episodes.

10.City Sushi (Season 15, Episode 6)

Quite a recent episode that i don't think you'd see on alot of similar lists. The pronunciation of City-Beef,Chicken,etc, by a heavily stereotyped Chinese Character gets old really fast. Add in a heavily stereotyped Japanese character and this episode should have been horrendous. Yet the sidestory of Butter imaginary friends, and Schizophrenic (sp?) counselor make this a recent classic.

9.A Ladder To Heaven (Season 6, Episode 12)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVM3O6zOhIU

8.Awesom-O (Season 8, Episode 5)

This was the episode that got me back into, South Park after not watching it for a good 5 years. The first time Butters got his own back on Cartman. It starts out as a simple manipulation of Butters naivete, but escalates into a mission to find an embarrasing video Butters has of Cartman. It also features the crazy SP Military attempting to use Awesom-O as a weapon, and what i imagine the actual process of coming up with Adam Sandler movies looks like :D.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkzYbbv2eTA

7.Woodland Critter Christmas (Season 8,14)

An episode completely revolving around Stan. The first appearance of the Woodland Critters, the most evil things in the SP Universe. From the shock of finding out that the Critters are the evil ones, to the even more shocking ending which is actually not that surprising at all :D.

I'll post the top 6 in an hour or two because somethings come up....

WOW SPOILERS IN HERE PEOPLE!

I'm currently watching Lost it's not everybody who followed it when it aired...

That's the way it is here on MoFo. We wrap spoilers for a few years, but then they are usually dropped after something has been around for a while. Just sort of let your eyes blur if you run across pics or text in regards to Lost in this here thread. People are posting pics and vids from pretty much every show as we move along, and i see no reason to single out any particular show to wrap with spoilers in a thread of this nature. Threads like these are always littered with spoilers, it seems. I will post a tag at the start of the thread warning people off the countdown if if they see a show in the front list they are currently watching.

EDIT: Message added.

@Godoggo - Feel free to move the warning around to wherever you think it is best used in the post with the main list. Thanks!

I get what you are saying Sedai, but it should just be common sense to write spoilers or to add the spoiler tag if you're about to spoil something. People are just lazy I guess.

Cause when I'm about to write something that is a spoiler I automatically think "hey, I'm not the only person in the world I should probably warn people so they can still get a great experience watching the movie/show for the first time." Of course it can slip, but people should seriously try their best to remember.

And I didn't read in depth I just saw the video linked with the titel "*character* dies". That's a little hard to unsee compared to plain text. :p

We need to come up with a statute of limitations on spoilers. After a certain period of time if you haven't seen it, you don't care about it enough to go in spoiler free.

Negative. Laziness has nothing to do with it, at least in my case, where I specifically and knowingly made the decision to NOT wrap spoilers on stuff that is older, since that is how I was told things run on the site when I first joined and raised a similar issue when I got spoiled.

The issue here is that threads with too many spoiler tags are unwieldy to many members, and list threads such as this one tend to have alleged spoilers in a large portion of the replies when new titles are posted. So we tend to pop a global warning at the start of the list to let folks know about possible spoilers in the list threads. Otherwise, it makes it rather tough to really talk about any of the reasons something is a favorite.

Sorry you got spoiled, because that burns by ass when it happens to me too, and I have added a warning at the start of the thread warning future readers about potential spoilers. :)

For the record, when I asked what a good amount of time was to consider dropping tags off of spoilers due to content age, I was told 5 years or so. This show, which started airing twice that many years ago, didn't air its last episode until 2010, so I guess it is sort of on the fence.

@Sadai Well the spoiler tag on this forum is also kind of stupid. I've been elsewhere on other forums where the spoiler tag takes up one line. And when it truly comes down to it - one line of "spoiler tag" with 10+ lines crammed up inside or 10 lines of exposed spoilers - which really takes up the space and which is the most annoying if you don't know about the given spoiler?

Also, it doesn't have to be a spoiler tag, it could just be the word SPOILER written like that right before the spoilers come. Simple as that. I'm new here yes, but I think it's stupid people have just chosen to say "**** it" and let it be because that's how it just is, apparently... Especially on a movie site with movie lovers you would expect people cared enough and had passion for the subject, that they know how fantastic it is to watch a twist ending you don't know about beforehand. And the other way around as well - how annoying it is to read a spoiler and just sit and wait for it to happen in the given movie/show when you watch it.

And it's total ******** that thing about "it's old so if you haven't watched yet it too bad"... So let's all ruin great old movies and tv shows because hey, they are old and all us old people have already seen it. I'm not ****ing 50 years old, if I wanna watch Psycho spoiler free then that shouldn't be a problem, though that is a stretched example to use but you get the point (I actually never got exposed to the twist ending of that movie. Pretty impressive... ;) )

But if people love to get spoiled over and over around here, and aren't interested in doing something about it, I guess I'll just have to adapt if that's the case.

The Twilight Zone was my #2. Almost every episode is like a brilliant short film. In fact, any time I watch an old horror or science-fiction film from the 50's or early 60's, I often think to myself, "Well, that was decent, but The Twilight Zone could've done it so much better in a fraction of the time." Like the show itself, Rod Serling's imagination existed in a different dimension; plus he had a fantastic voice and screen presence. (Insert him as a host of Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo and even that show might become watchable.) The episodes were proof that even pulp stories could be highly intelligent and thought-provoking. The twist endings, even though you knew they were coming, often managed to pack a punch. I don't typically think of myself as a fan of science-fiction, but Twilight Zone was never about aliens shooting lasers or Jedis molesting Ewoks. Instead it used highly-imaginative, fantastical stories to examine what it means to be human. The show explored our darkest fears, our deepest desires; it worked as horror; it worked as fantasy; it worked as science-fiction; it worked on a psychological level, a sociological level. It introduced many iconic actors and actresses. It captured the public's imagination in space exploration. And it also did a better job of probing the paranoia and fear and distrust that stemmed from the Cold War than anything else I've seen. The Twilight Zone isn't necessarily my second favorite show, but it's as good as anything in the history of television, so I had to put it near the top of my list.

Lost was my #5. I was hooked from the very first night it premiered. I've never been as emotionally invested in a show before or since, which also means I've never been so let down by a show, either. People point to the last season and the finale and the "flash-sideways," but for me the show started trending downwards after season three. "Through the Looking Glass" was the peak of the show for me, and the ending ("We have to go back!") provided one of the biggest holy *****! moments I've ever experienced. I introduced one of my friends to the show, and he and I used to have long discussions (often while stoned) about what was going to happen, theorizing all these crazy possibilities. I used to get on message boards devoted to Lost and discuss episodes and read people's theories. The show was a phenomenon. I thought I was obsessed with it, but there were people out there who would comb over every episode, looking for clues and meaning in the tiniest of details. And that's part of what made the show so fun--- trying to solve this elaborate "mystery" as we all tumbled down the rabbit hole together.

But the mythology and guesswork were just part of the appeal, since the show excelled at character development and made me emotionally invested in everyone on the show--- quite a feat given the size of the cast. The flashbacks were often just as fascinating and revealing as the developments on the island. When a character died, which was often, I was always devastated. The show was at its best when it sparked the imagination of its fans. When it started answering some of its big questions, I often felt underwhelmed. Peeking behind the curtain just wasn't as fun. Some of the plot developments in later seasons felt too much like the writers had written themselves into a corner. I was enormously disappointed with the entire last season, but I had given the show the benefit of the doubt, trusting that it would redeem itself in the end. . . then came the finale, which confirmed my biggest fears and has since soured my memories of one of my most beloved shows. But no matter the destination, the ride was unrivaled. I don't think there will ever be anything like it again.

I made sure to watch True Detective before submitting my list. I didn't vote for it, but it barely missed the cut. McConaughey has been on an amazing hot streak as of late. He's like a batter hitting home runs every time he steps up to the plate. His performance as Rust Cohle is just as impressive as his Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club. I fell in love with his character as soon as he opened his mouth and spouted his first nihilistic ramblings. The dialogue throughout the show is incredibly strong. I loved the opening credits and the music. I loved the swampy atmosphere. The tracking shot in episode four is jaw-dropping. For me, the detective/mystery aspect of the show was secondary to the relationship between McConaughey's and Harrelson's characters. Watching those two perform at such a high caliber and bounce lines off one another was the highlight of the show. That's why I think the decision to return for a second season is ill-conceived. But even if all future seasons are lackluster, nothing will diminish the greatness of season one, which stands on its own.

My List So Far:
#2) The Twilight Zone
#4) That 70's Show
#5) Lost
#6) King of the Hill

#8) Survivor
#12) Batman: The Animated Series

Theme Song (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HQoRXhS7vlU)

Science fiction horror series about two FBI agents that investigate paranormal cases. Mulder is the believer while Scully is the skeptic assigned to debunk Mulder's theories.

Spin-offs: The Lone Gunman. The series also continued in comic book form.

http://i58.tinypic.com/ohr5hv.jpg

How Soon is Now: The theme song's famous whistle effect was inspired by the popular Smith's song.

Hannibal connection: Gillian Andersen based her performance of Agent Scully on the Clarice Starling character in Silence of the Lambs. Interestingly enough she now plays Hannibal's psychiatrist and accomplice on the show Hannibal.

When the move Hannibal happened, Anderson was in the running for Clarice Starling, but a clause had been built into her contract that she could not play another FBI agent.

Scully's box: because she was so short she had to stand on a box much of the time when she stood next to Mulder. He is ten inches taller than her.

10. The X-Files ( 1993 - 2002)

I watched "The X-Files", but it didn't make my list. The sci-fi episodes were great, but some of the episodes leaned a little bit too much towards horror for my tastes.

I'm glad to see that it made the list though. The X-Files movies were only okay, but the TV show was a very good show.
