I've watched every episode many times and it never gets old. I think that's a sign of a great television show. The Simpsons are like that up until season 9 or 10, maybe even a couple season after that, which is why I had Seinfeld at #3 and The Simpsons at #4 - because Seinfeld knew when to call it quits.

Never really cared for Seinfeld. Sorry Jerry.
GOT didn't make my list, but it's a good show. Still i'm very dissapointed to see it above shows like The Sopranos and The Wire. Seinfeld didn't make my list for two reasons, fistly because i haven't watched it in a few years so it isn't as fresh in my mind as some of the others i voted for. Also unlike some of the others i didn't think it needed my help to make the top 10.
I think i may rewatch some of my favourite episodes soon, if i was to make a top ten it'd probably look something like this:
1.The Merv Griffin Show
2.The Library (purely for Bookman :D)
3.The Marine Biologist
4.The Soup Nazi
5.The Chinese Restaurant
6.The Pez Dispenser
7.The Subway
8.The Outing
9.The Hamptons
10.The Sniffing Accountant

Seinfeld wasn't on my list but that was a case of what was I thinking? It's consistently funny, outrageous and inspired a lot of future sitcoms.
I agree with Harry; it just doesn't get old. I could watch the one about Lloyd Braun and the gum over and over.

The Wire would've been my number 1, just ahead of Twin Peaks.
The Wire is flawless while the second season of Twin Peaks let it down a little. Everything leading up to finding out who killed Laura is the best tv I've seen.
Tough to say how high i would've put GoT because it's not finished. Probably 6th. Id be surprised if it wasnt top 3 by the time it finished though. Easily the best thing on television at the moment. Anyone who hasnt given it a decent shot is missing out.

3. Seinfeld (1989 - 1998)
"The Chicken Roaster": Kenny Rogers Roasters gave the show permission to use their name in the episode and even provided a meal for the cast. Although they didn't make it in America the chain is still open in parts of Asia.
I know that I'm in the minority, but I'm not a fan of "Seinfeld". The funny thing is that before the show ever aired, I was a fan of Jerry Seinfeld as a stand-up comedian. I thought that he was a very funny guy, but the show just never made me laugh. I found the characters to be obnoxious and self-centered.
I knew the show had the potential to end up in the top 5, but I'll never understand why.
However, in reference to Kenny Rogers Roasters, I really miss their chicken pot pie. It was served in a bread bowl, and it was delicious.

I had Seinfeld at #5. Excellent show, even if there is a slight drop in general quality during the last two or three seasons.

I've seen a few episodes of Seinfeld (I think reruns of it came on before or after something else I was watching?) and don't think I laughed a single time. Just not my kind of show.

Haven't seen a single episode of that and -- allow me to transform into Miss Vicky here -- don't really want to see a single episode of it, either.
Unless you think there's something I should check out.
Anyway, here is my full list. I know it's a teensy bit early, but this countdown is basically done. I have The Simpsons at #11.

I haven't revisited QAF in quite awhile myself, but I absolutely loved it when I saw it last.
I didn't use rewatchability as a criteria for this list because aside from Blackadder and Roseanne, I typically don't rewatch any television or if I do, it'll just be to brush up on the previous season before the new one starts.

Rewatchability was one of the most important pieces of criteria for me for this list. A show can be a great show, but if it's not rewatchable, it's not likely to make my favorites list.
That's why most of my favorite shows didn't make the list.

Seinfeld was my #1. No other tv series has come close to the perfection that it is. Other than the very short first season, it was consistenly hilarious and entertaining right until the finale. I quote Seinfeld so much that it's probably a large percentage of my daily talking output.
I was really gunning for it to be #1 on this list, but at least it sits in the top 3. The greatest show of all time (in my opinion, of course).

Even though I did vote for Breaking Bad and not for The Simpsons, I'll still feel weird about the former outranking the latter for some reason.
I went to bed early last night. In my head was dread, that The Simpsons was going to beat Seinfeld. I awake to my fears becoming reality. Just a little more of my faith in humanity has died.
Seinfeld is the greatest comedy of all time. I don't even really think its all that close. I have seen every episode a solid ten times. I still laugh consistently. This show still comes up in my daily conversations. I still find time for four or five episodes a week while eating dinner or for back ground noise. I will do a top ten tonight or tomorrow.
Catching up a bit late...
I tried to watch The Wire, but it didn't grab me after 3-4 episodes, so my GF and I just sort of blew it off. I do plan on jumping back in and giving it another chance, but at first blush, it seemed like a pretty standard police show, so I just grouped it in with CSI and all the rest of those potboilers.
Seinfeld is a sitcom, and I am not a fan of sitcoms. Definitely not on my list. Moving on...
Damn...I went and screwed up another one of these countdowns, and I think I may just stop participating in these because I make egregious oversights when I compile my lists. Either that, or I need a new method of adjusting my lists when I make changes. When I started, I was waffling back and forth on whether Game of Thrones should be in the top 5 for me, or sit just on the bubble at around 6 or 7. I just checked the list I submitted and IT'S NOT ON THE LIST AT ALL. While shuffling titles around, I somehow left it off, which is just stupid. Game of Thrones is most certainly one of the best television shows ever produced, and most certainly one of my favorites of all time. It should be a place or two higher, but lost a stack due to my asshattery.
Anyway, I would put Game of Thrones at number 6, and I am not sure how the countdown would change, if at all, with the addition of the show to my list.

I probably won't be around much the next few days, and I think everybody knows what the top two shows are, so here's my entire list. I had "Seinfeld" at number eleven, "Breaking Bad" at ten, and "The Simpsons" as my number three.
1. "The Rockford Files"
2. "Moonlighting"
3. "The Simpsons"
4. "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
5. "Arrested Development"
6. "Monty Python’s Flying Circus"
7. "The Larry Sanders Show"
8. "Cheers"
9. "Peep Show"
10. "Breaking Bad"
11. "Seinfeld"
12. "Lonesome Dove"
13. "The Bob Newhart Show"
14. "The Colbert Report"
15. "The Office" - UK
16. "Deadwood"
17. "The Kids in the Hall"
18. "The Office" - US
19. "St. Elsewhere"
20. "Parks & Recreation"
21. "Barney Miller"
22. "Mr. Show with Bob & David"
23. "All in the Family"
24. "Get A Life"

I had eight not make the Top 100. "Have Gun - Will Travel" was already revealed as my one-pointer, that nobody else voted for. The only no-show from my top twelve is all the way up as my second overall choice, the wonderful "Moonlighting". It has some dated '80s elements, to be sure, but apart from those aesthetics, it holds up extremely well, and there is no doubt why Bruce Willis became a star overnight. Taking the fast-talking, overlapping, rat-a-tat-tat witty dialogue and banter from the '30s and '40s Screwball era and infusing it into a (then) modern day detective show which relentlessly and cleverly deconstructed not just that genre but the television medium itself in often anarchic gags and references that owe their lineage to the diverse likes of Ernie Kovacs, Mel Brooks, Barry Gordy, and the Looney Tunes, all wrapped around two great lead actors born to play their characters. It's a groundbreaking show that is also endlessly entertaining. To me, anyway.
"The Bob Newhart Show" and "Barney Miller" are two of the very best sitcoms of the 1970s, without a doubt, but I'd rank them up there among the best ever. Great writing and perfect ensemble casts are the not-so-secret ingredients to their success. "St. Elsewhere" had a huge and eventually rotating ensemble, and in the hands of creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey, who would go on to create "Northern Exposure" next, their combination of off-center, often very dark humor and empathetic humanity, in this case coming together in the genre of a hospital show, worked swimmingly. I think at the time and even now it is sort of linked in many minds to Stephen Bochco's "Hill Street Blues" and "L.A. Law", which accomplished many of the same things in a similar style and on the same network, running concurrently for many seasons. But "St. Elsewhere" was just a little weirder, and for me rises as the best network drama of the decade.
In my book, after "Monty Python's Flying Circus" the two sketch comedy programs that belong anywhere near the discussion of greatness are not the endless "Saturday Night Live" nor even the hilarious "The Carol Burnett Show" or the incredibly influential "SCTV" but rather "The Kids in the Hall" and "Mr. Show with Bob & David", which both had such consistent quality and also picked up the mantle of the greats before them while adding their own voices and spin. Great damn stuff, and so many indelible characters and belly laughs.
And then lastly, Chris Elliot's Get A Life", which was so relentlessly bizarre and often insane, and somehow stayed on the air for two seasons in the early 1990s. Taking his sarcastic anti-comedy brand of humor from "Late Night with David Letterman" with his friend and co-creator Adam Resnick, plus enlisting sitcom veteran David Mirkin, Chris Elliot created one of the weirdest and funniest shows network television has ever seen, and he happily brought his father, the legendary comedian Bob Elliot who had been one of the most influential voices in comedy in the 1950s and '60s with his writing and performing partner Ray Goulding, along for the ride. Chris Elliot's later film Cabin Boy has become something of a cult hit, but if you like the brand of comedy there, seek out and enjoy this take of a 30-year-old paperboy who lives in his parents' garage and has some ridiculous and hilarious adventures, often very cartoonlike in nature, but done live action. Or at least, Chris Elliot action.
So there.

I don't think that's true at all. I would actually be surprised if Breaking Bad takes the top spot. It may have a higher number of rabid fans on this board than Homer and company, but I'd venture to say that The Simpsons has more fans overall and those points can add up to make a big difference.

I've expected Breaking Bad to be the #1 pick since this started. The only other two that I thought would take it were The Soprano's and The Wire. It didn't occur to me that The Simpson's would be #1, but I'd love it to be.
No Muppets? Again, I'm really surprised. Did it not appear earlier on? The biggest omission for me has been I, Claudius. I really thought it'd make it. When it hadn't appeared in the first 30 I got my hopes up and started to think it'd be top half. By the time we hit 30, I was positive it'd missed out. :(
Did anyone watch it for the list? What did you think?

Almost none of my shows made the list. Too bad because many of them were all time greats.:p
I've only watched a few minutes here and there of Seinfeld, not my top of show the characters seemed whiny. The only character I liked was the short guy in the glasses.
I don't WANT to like Seinfeld. It's a sitcom, the characters are mean and selfish, I LOATHE Jerry Seinfeld, and there was an appalling lack of minorities on that show. Despite that, it really is a brilliant show and I laugh despite myself. Humour cuts through politics I guess.
It's not really inconsistent with those politics anyway, since the whole point is that they're insular, self-absorbed, terrible people.

When comedy is at its best it is making fun of everyone and everything never pulling punches. Seinfeld was fantastic in that regard. I don't know Seinfeld's politics and don't want to. If I were to take a guees it would be based on the perception of Hollywood as a whole, and would have nothing to do with the show. Yoda is right, the whole point of the show is that they are horrible people. For me the best comedy points out the absurdity of our culture. Seinfeld takes the cake.

Well, if we're already posting full lists...
1. Mystery Science Theater 3000
2. Freaks and Geeks
3. The Wire
4. Fawlty Towers
5. Seinfeld
6. Chappelle's Show
7. Daria
8. Arrested Development
9. The Simpsons
10. Twin Peaks

16. The Thick of It
17. Breaking Bad
18. The Sopranos
19. Black Books
20. Spaced
21. Cowboy Bebop
22. The X-Files
23. Blackadder Goes Forth
24. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
25. Burn Notice
In hindsight, I probably didn't take my choices all that seriously. As for the ones that didn't make it...
Mystery Science Theater 3000 was an obvious favourite because it was just some of the purest fun I've ever had while watching a show. The show had a ludicrous premise - a mad scientist traps a lovable everyman into space and forces him to watch the worst movies ever made as part of his plan for world domination - and it knew it, but it was the perfect excuse to have Joel (later Mike) and his robot friends make all sorts of cracks, both out of affectionate amusement and scathing cynicism and all points in between. The "host segments" were also home to a variety of hilarious skits and the interplay between our nominal heroes and villains was always a highlight. Despite my talking earlier about how shows generally go downhill after about seven seasons, Mystery Science Theater 3000 somehow managed to maintain an impressive degree of quality across eleven seasons and so many cast changes that by the time the show ended there wasn't a single main cast member from the first season left. That's a testament to the strength of the show's convoluted yet simple formula and the writing on offer, to say nothing of the actors involved.
Chappelle's Show was a strong if short-lived sketch show that sadly got cut short due to a variety of factors - rigourous shooting schedules, executive meddling and, of course, meatheads turning "I'm Rick James, bitch" from a great parody of celebrity excess into an incredibly tiresome catch-phrase. Though you could make the argument based on the "Lost Episodes" that the show was starting to lose its spark due to the various aforementioned problems, but the first two seasons still make for some of the best sketch comedy I've ever seen. Leaving aside season 2's entire Rick James episode (which, even without it being run into the ground by people quoting it all the time, is still one of the show's greatest moments), there's plenty of comedy gold where Chappelle will either provide some clever social commentary or just mine acceptable targets for easy laughs. The white supremacist who is actually a blind-since-birth black man, a dramatisation of Prince beating Charlie Murphy at basketball, Wayne Brady trashing his nice-guy image in a horrifying parody of Training Day...it's all there and it's all good.
I didn't really start watching Daria until it finally got released on DVD a few years back. An extremely turn-of-the-millennium animated sitcom about the titular teenage misfit and her misadventures involving self-absorbed family members, incompetent teachers, idiotic classmates and many more. It's a much more down-to-earth cartoon than Beavis and Butt-Head and all the better for it.
Whose Line Is It Anyway? (the U.S. version, I had to clarify after I submitted this list) was another show that was important to me because of how rapid-fire and frantic some of the scenes could be. Such a simple formula - each episode consists of a series of improv sketches framed as a sort of game show, even though "the points don't matter" - but it was capable of guaranteeing some serious laughs. The fact that the U.S. version locked it down the four-person ensemble to three regulars and a constantly changing guest somehow managed to guarantee quality comedy rather than stifle it. The interplay between Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie was always great, and there were plenty of times when Wayne Brady performed a show-stopping number on the spot that made you question whether or not it really was made up on the spot. It's not grandiose drama or whatever, but it's plenty entertaining.
Regular Show was a long shot and deep down I knew it was probably never going to make the list. Not even Adventure Time made the list, so what hope did this have? In any case, it's just a show that speaks to my sensibilities with its blend of mundane slacker comedy and nightmarish surrealism and it just keeps getting better and better with every new season. I can only hope it goes out on top rather than fall apart like SpongeBob did.
The Thick of It seemed like it had a real shot at being in. The best way I've heard it summed up is "Yes, Minister meets The Office" due to its combination of mid-level politics and cynical mockumentary antics, but that doesn't quite do it justice. The very naturalistic performances aid a very dark comedy about the inner workings of government departments make for some great moments - especially thanks to Peter Capaldi's iconic turn as incredibly acerbic spin doctor Malcolm Tucker - that had the sense to go out on a high note. I guess now I should start watching Veep.
Black Books, well, at its heart it's a pretty simple work-com about a small bookshop run by Bernard Black, a chain-smoking alcoholic misanthrope, who's assisted by Manny and Fran, his new hire and best/only friend respectively. There are familiar sitcom tropes all over the place - the "replace a broken treasure without the owner finding out" plot, for instance - but it's got some clever writing here and there. It took forever to grow on me because seemingly everyone in my friend circle thought it was the best show ever, and now that I finally admit liking it enough to put on the list, I realise that in hindsight I shouldn't have included it.
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace was probably the longest shot of all. A six-episode series about the titular Stephen King wannabe creating his own horror TV show back in the '80s. The show-within-a-show about a haunted hospital was deliberately designed to be so-bad-it's-good, and that would've worked fine on its own. More of the show's strength came from Garth and his publisher Dean giving retrospective interviews about how they think that the show was an underappreciated masterpiece when the actual footage shows that it's anything but. i guess I have to admit that it was starting to lose a bit of its pull during the last episode of two (which isn't good when there are only six episodes), but it was just too charming in its own way. I guess this was another one that could've afforded to be dropped off the final list.
Burn Notice...well, it's a fun show, but reading the write-ups on The Rockford Files really drove home just how derivative of older shows it really was (both shows do involve the main character trying to outsmart his opponents on a weekly basis while also having a parent in the supporting cast). The fact that I still managed to watch six seasons despite being aware of how it wasn't all that original probably says something. Given that this didn't make the one-point list, I have to wonder who else voted for it.

Not to make it worse for you, but Game of Thrones was 1 point behind Seinfeld. You would have pushed it to the number three spot by voting for it.

Wait a minute, what happened to The Muppets ? :(
I'd have to got back and look to know for sure, but I think you and I were the only ones to vote for them. Someone else may have, but I have to get the next entry together so I don't have time to look right now.
The entire 548 title list will be open very soon for people to browse through.
Also it's almost time to find out who won that top ten prediction.

I am still torn on whether or not I prefer Joel or Mike. I think in a pinch I'd say Mike because I've seen more episodes with him in them and he presided over the show once it had hit its stride while Joel had to contend with the extremely rough early seasons.

An animated sitcom about a middle-class family living in Springfield.
It is the longest running sitcom, animated program and scripted prime time program in American television history.
It's run has earned it a total of 31 Emmys.

Origin: It began as a short on The Tracy Ullman Show
D'oh: In French it's T'oh and in Spanish it's Ouch!
It has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary but there it is spelled Doh. Matt Groening prefers that spelling.
Do the Bartman: In 1990 it topped the UK's charts. It was written by Michael Jackson and Bryan Loren.
In the episode "Stark Raving Dad" that really is Michael Jackson voicing a character, however it is an impersonator singing, "Happy birthday, Lisa"

24601: This was Principal Skinner's prisoner number in Vietnam. It was also Hank Jennings prisoner number in Twin Peaks.
Theme Song: It's perfect for The Simpsons and only took Danny Elfman two days to record it.

Sam Simon: He hasn't been a producer for over fifteen years now, but still gets credited each episode as a thank you for laying down the foundation of the sitcom and his part in making The Simpsons so successful.
Sam Simon now spends his time rescuing dogs from the pound and training them to be companions to the deaf. Sam Simon is my new hero.
Now I know why they killed Maude: the actress felt she wasn't being payed enough and left the show. She eventually came back, but too late to save Maude.

Your number 1 television show. Exactly half of the people that sent in a list voted for this show. It beat The Simpsons by a whopping 136 points.
Breaking Bad is a drama series about a chemistry teacher that becomes involved in the meth trade after being diagnosed with cancer.
It won sixteen Emmys during its run and in 2014 was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for being the highest rated show of all time.
Spin Offs: Better Call Saul will be airing as a prequel to Breaking Bad. It is set to air 2015.
The White's Home: It is an actual inhabited home by a woman named Fran.
Bryan Cranston murder suspect: a long time ago he and his brother worked in a Florida restaurant. The chef, which nobody liked, was found murdered. As he and his brother had just resigned, the two became suspects.
http://i60.tinypic.com/2znr91i.jpg
The X-Files Connection: Not only was Vince Gilligan a writer for the show, Bryan Cranston was in one episode. Remember the man who had to travel west at a high speed or his head would explode? That was Cranston.
The Seinfeld connection: Everyone who watched Seinfeld remembers
Cranston's role as the dentist who coins the term "regifting" and converts to Judaism for the jokes. Anna Gunn had a stint as Jerry's cheating girlfriend and Bob Odenkirk played Elaine's sexual frustrated boyfriend.
King Cranston: Gina Torress is the list Queen, but with roles in three of the top ten shows, Cranston rules the top ten.
New Mexico: It's happy about the show. Tourism has boosted and stores happily sell blue meth candy and blue meth donuts.

It took me three or four attempts to get into Breaking Bad, but boy am I glad of persevered. The first few episodes of the first season leave you no clue as to how good this is going to get. By the time it really gets rolling, it's amazing. I'm so glad I didn't watch it as it was aired because I couldn't watch it without watching at least three episodes at a time. I eventually caught up to it and it was painful waiting for the next episode.
Many of is grew up with The Simpsons and can't remember life without it. It's always praised for being exceptionally funny, which it was but underneath it all was a really good warm family show.
My big but here is that I have to say good things about The Simpsons in the past tense and it's a current show. That made voting for it tricky and ultimately I opted out. You got to know when to end a show and that time is come and gone.

1. Breaking Bad (2008 - 2013)
I'm not surprised at all that "Breaking Bad" landed at the #1 spot on the list. I didn't watch it when it originally aired, but I heard so much about it that I bought the DVDs and watched the whole series as a marathon over about a week or two.
The show is definitely a top quality show, and it deserves the #1 spot. If this was a list of the best quality shows, it might have been #1 on my list, but as a list of favorite shows, it didn't make my list. That's not because I didn't enjoy the show, because I loved it. Every time an episode ended, I couldn't wait for the next episode to start, and I was glad that I wasn't watching it on a weekly basis.
However, it didn't make the list of my favorite shows because it's not a rewatchable show for me. Now that I've seen it, I'm glad that I watched it, but I have no desire to go back and watch it again.
And just for the record, I hate "The Simpsons", and I'm surprised that it landed this high on the list.

10 years from now Breaking Bad won't be remembered like The Simpson is today.
Obviously, they are two totally different shows.
Breaking Bad WILL be remembered ten years from now. It has the HIGHEST rated episode of television, ever. Bryan Cranston is unbelievable in the role of a lifetime and it did NOT fumble the series finale like so many other shows have. A more reasonable comparison would be The Sopranos or The Wire.
The Simpsons is LEGEND. So many shows owe their style and success to the Simpsons. There are people on this board who have never been in a world where there are not new episodes of the Simpsons. Yet with the brilliance, comes the bad. I don't even remember the last time I saw a new episode of the show. Probably 5-10 years.

Sadly, only the first three seasons got released on DVD. It definitely had some low points, especially once Yasmine Bleeth came on full time, but it also had some really great, funny and emotional episodes. I watched it religiously when it was on the air. I really wish the rest of it would be released.
People who say "The Simpsons" has been lousy for the last half of its run don't watch it so how do they know? I've never stopped watching it because I've never gotten the hip hate, and I'm usually rewarded with the miniscule effort I put into it to get some laughs or tears. But I'm old-fashioned because I watch shows when they're on. What else do I have to do, Guap? :)

People who say "The Simpsons" has been lousy for the last half of its run don't watch it so how do they know?
That's wrong in two ways. Most of us don't say it's lousy, we say it's nowhere near the quality it used to be. Not even close. Second, we watch it, just not religiously.
Both were high on my list. I was obsessed with old Simpsons as a kid, and as a late teen/young adult Breaking Bad was hugely inspiring and quite a profound experience. I think it most certainly will live on for a long time for the simple fact that it was such an experience for so many people, and will be a great experience for more to come who have yet to see it. I don't care if I'm jumping the band wagon. Breaking Bad is brilliant, genius, one of the best shows of all-time and has the best episode of a television show ever made.
I put Breaking Bad lower at #5 on my list, but it's so low because I knew it would be #1. If my list was more accurate, I would have had it at #2. There was a time when I called it my single favorite show of all-time. I still think it is the most well-made thing ever put to the small screen. Many sleepless nights were spent anticipating the next episode.
The Simpsons was #6. There was a time, when I was a kid, when it was my favorite thing. However, I now admire it more nostalgically. I just never really watch it anymore. Still, I admire it's humor, it remains a fantastic show in my mind and it's place on this list is deserved. Homer is definitely one of the great characters in television history, and Grandpa is just as funny.

Maybe a little? It's been awhile since I last watched Evil Dead II, but I don't recall much gore. Army of Darkness has him mostly battling an army of skeletons. I don't think there's much blood to it.
Have you seen Bubba Ho-Tep? That's another Bruce Campbell horror-comedy that's much more comedy than horror. And there's hardly any blood or anything in it.

How long did it take to do just the IMDB part of it? I see there is 548 shows all rated at IMDB list and with the names of us who voted for them. Good grief! that must have taken some time, how long?
BTW who is Amy Lee?

Yup. Thanks Godoggo for running this thing. Great job! And thanks to JiraffeJustin for the work he did too.
Yes, I want to thank JJ too. He set me up real nice and it was easy to jump right in. I loved the IMDB list idea and it was easy way to go back and check something to make sure no mistakes were made.
If I ever do another list, I'm doing the IMDB thing again.

Is Army of Darkness also a video game? I vaguely remember a game at Dave & Busters that was about battling an army of skeletons, but I don't know the name of it.
I've heard of Bubba Ho-Tep, but I've never seen it. I didn't know that Bruce Campbell was in it. All I remember about it is it looked like it might have been some kind of an Elvis spoof from the DVD cover.

Godoggo, I didn't know you were an emo singer!
10 years from now Breaking Bad won't be remembered like The Simpson is today.
And neither will the Simpsons. Because it will still probably be on the air and if possible will be worse than it is now
I used to love The Simpsons. But unlike Seinfeld or BB it simply doesn't know when to call it a day. It would be the worst show currently on television if not for Family Guy.
BB on the other hand was a fantastic experience. When the last half of the final season aired I could not stop thinking about it. But I also think it should have been lower. If not for The Sopranos, a show like BB would never exist. It is still a great show and does deserve top 5 IMO, but I think there are several candidates that deserve the top spot more.

I really don't know. The real work was taking all the info from JJ and copying it to my list. After that it was easy. As soon as someone would send me a list I would add all their shows. If it was a list that had a lot of shows already on the list it took me maybe fifteen minutes to a half hour to add their list. If it was a list that I had to add a bunch of new shows then maybe an hour. So I would estimate 20 to 30 hours?

I'm pretty sure that I was one of them, but it doesn't bother me because they're still my favorite shows. The only way it would bother me if my shows didn't make the MoFo list would have been if I had voted strategically to try to have more of my shows on the final list, and they still didn't make it.
As long as I make my list using my heart instead of my head, it will never bother me if my favorites aren't everyone else's favorites.

I go back and forth between whether The Simpsons or Arrested Development is my favorite show of all time, and I guess on this day I was feeling AD. I've loved The Simpsons for as long as I can remember and it still holds up. I stopped watching after season 24 because it's unbearable now, but the first 8-10 seasons are some of the best television ever. I could've knocked it down a few spots for staying on the air too long, but I prefer to just forget the last 10 years exist.
Breaking Bad is a great great show too, but it's a little too flawed for me to consider it the best show of all time. Oh well, I can't really complain since I do love it.
Can't believe 24 didn't make it. Also I just started season 3 of Six Feet Under and I wish I had watched it sooner. I probably would've placed it around #7.

I considered Bones as well. Ultimately, I think I like Emily Deschanel more than I do the actual show, so I cut it. I do watch it every Sunday though.
I feel about it the same way I do Sleepy Hollow. It's a nice show to have on and it's better that a lot of shows not on cable, but I'm not overly crazy about it.

I like the show a lot, but I was really upset by what they did with Zack's character. Then they added insult to injury by replacing him with Daisy - who is absolutely unbearably annoying. I don't much care for Sweets either and ultimately those two characters are what made me leave it off my ballot.
I'm behind quite a ways on it though. The last episode I remember ended with Bones on the run with Christine.

In season 3, it was revealed that Zack was the Gormogon killer's apprentice. The team discovers this when Zack tries to kill them with an explosive but ends up injuring himself instead. His character is then committed to a mental institution.
It was ridiculous. It didn't fit with his character at all and I didn't understand the reason for writing him out of the show. The actor that played him had no intention of leaving the show and had no idea that he'd basically been fired until he got the script for that last episode. Then in a later season, they had a really stupid episode where he escaped from the mental institution to help them solve a case.

It's interesting, because Breaking Bad and The Simpsons serve as a good proxy for a fundamental question about rating TV shows: how much do you factor in quality dilution? One of the reasons BB does so well is that it doesn't have a bad season; it told a story precisely the size it was prepared to tell, and didn't overstay its welcome. The Simpsons has probably produced more entertainment, but with more gaps in quality.
That's without even getting into how different the shows are, even superficially. Comedy and high-octane drama, live action and animated, etc. I had The Simpsons higher for cultural impact alone, but both are fantastic shows, and I love that they're back-to-back, because together they're a great example of how varied TV can be.
Anyway, that said, great job Amy! :) Thanks for doing this.

Well, I probably haven't seen enough Simpsons episodes to judge the show overall but I didn’t think the episodes I saw were particularly funny. I liked them better than Family Guy but I didn’t The Simpsons was nearly as funny as The Muppet Show or I Love Lucy. Heck, in my opinion there are several shows that aren't even primarily comedies that have funnier scenes and episodes like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Girls und Panzer, the Hercules and Xena shows, and Teen Titans. I don’t think The Simpsons is a terrible show but I definitely wouldn’t call it one of the best ever either.
As far as quality dilution goes, I generally judge TV shows by season rather than a whole. The first season of Legend of Korra is pretty rocky but it still placed third on my list since season 2, 3, and so far 4 are fantastic and Teen Titans went off the rails a bit with season 5 but I still love the first four.

I love a lot of the shows on this list, but I'm really happy there's some love for Dead Set! It's such a great show. I'm kind of in love with Charlie Brooker though, and will watch anything he's involved in. They're fairly consistently great shows, but that's coming from an obsessive fan. He always plays so cleverly with genre and the role of technology and/or the media in our lives, and is just really funny, or heartbreaking, as the case may be. I put one of his on my list, but not Dead Set, and I undoubtedly put it too high, I mean, above The Twilight Zone? That seems ridiculous, past me. :D
Anyway, here's my list, if anyone's interested.

I, actually, for quite a while purposely left off Breaking Bad because I knew it was going to get a lot of love from everyone else. I ended up only giving it 2 points, which wouldn't have made a difference, but could have meant giving some love to a show like The Good Wife or Space Ghost Coast to Coast. But my dad asked me about Breaking Bad, though, and when I started describing it to him, talking about how Walt and Jesse's journeys are almost the inverse of each other, I just started remembering how great it is and decided to put it back on my list.

A show I should have listed but didn't was a show I loved from the Sci-Fi Channel called The Invisible Man.
About a thief named Darien Fawkes who gets a gland put in his brain that allows him to turn invisible. He is then recruited by a spy agency that is absorbed an fronted by various agencies such as Fish and Wildlife, The Bureau of Indian Affairs and even the Postal Service. And excellent blend of espionage, action, sci fi and comedy. And episodes in full are on YouTube.

Porridge was 154th. I was the only person to vote for Morse and Edge of Darkness, and probably a host more but I became sad and yearned for a happy place .....
.... which I found in Kung Fu at 180 - I knew Toose still served a purpose! ;D
As usual I'm a bit behind everyone (what can I say I'm a little slow). Anyway excellent job at bringing the whole thing together G-Dog. Great effort.
In the end I did pretty well with my list, with 15 out of my 25 making it. Though there were a few I hoped would have been higher. Angel at #66 seems harsh considering how high Buffy and Firefly were. And a show as legendary as MASH not even making the top 50 seems somewhat sacriligeous
And of the shows that didn't make it I'd say my biggest disappointment would be Taxi. To me (and many others) that's one of the great sitcoms of all time so no sign of it was a bit surprising. For me it's got 3 of the greatest and funniest TV characters of all time - Louie De Palma, Jim Ignatowski and Latka Gravas; all in one show!!! Oh and Marili Henner was smoking hot as Elaine
1. The X-Files (#10)
2. Boy Meets World (#75)
3. Quantum Leap (#63)
4. Stargate SG-1
5. Star Trek: The Next Generation (#25)

20. Moonlighting
21. Futurama (#28)
22. Eerie Indiana
23. Twilight Zone (#18)
24. Home Improvement
25. Mad About You
Had I had more time the list may have been significantly different but it was really a last minute rush job and for my picks I basically just looked at my DVDs for inspiration, so shows I don't have on DVD and stuff like chat shows and panel shows never came into my mind really.

We had six shows in common; The X-Files, Buffy, Angel, M*A*S*H, Futurama and Game of Thrones.
I agree that M*A*S*H seems low, but there are probably a lot of youngins' that haven't seen it. My dad and grandpa both loved that show so I was watching it from a very early age.
I would love to do another Mofo Tv list in two or three years and compare the two. I know the members submitting lists would be a lot different so it wouldn't be a true comparison, but I would like to see how some of the more recent shows hold up. Dexter, Breaking Bad and so on.

30. The Shield
29. Black-Adder II
28. Futurama 4_5 My favorite American animation (in all senses), specially the episode where the dog awaits for his owner.
27. Deadwood
26. Community
25. Star Trek: The Next Generation 4 Great sci fi series, not as good as Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5 though, suffers from episodic writing and TV cliches.
24. All In The Family
23. Monty Python's Flying Circus
22. The Office
21. Sherlock
20. Dexter 4++ Really great serial killer series that suffers from excessive number of seasons. I strongly identified with the main character.
19. Friends 3 Overrated
18. The Twilight Zone
17. Band of Brothers 5 Should have been higher.
16. Mad Men 2_5 Boring.
15. True Detective
14. Lost 4_5 ++ In my top 30 TV series list and for a reason. Excellent series for people between the ages of 13 to 20.
13. Fawlty Towers
12. South Park 4_5 - My second favorite American animation. Suffers a bit from lacking in elegance though.
11. Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2_5 (for the first 3 episodes, dropped it because it felt too cliche)
10. The X-Files
9. Arrested Development 4 Slightly overrated but still great comedy.
8. Firefly 3 (for the first couple of episodes, I would need to watch the whole thing though, specially considering how well regarded it is)
7. The Sopranos 5 - (almost a full blown masterpiece, it's suffers a bit from the slow pacing/episodic nature)
6. The Wire 3 Only watched the first season but I didn't find it very interesting though I would be interested in finishing the series.
5. Twin Peaks 3 (for the first season, did not capture my full interest)
4. Game of Thrones 5 - (like The Sopranos, great series but suffers from a problem: kill'en all syndrome)
3. Seinfeld 5 (best comedy series ever made)
2. The Simpsons 4 (slightly overrated, still very good for the first 8-9 seasons or so, after that it's around 6/10 show for me)
1. Breaking Bad 5 + (totally deserves first spot, if I were to list my top 10 series right now it would be 9 anime and Breaking Bad).
Sad that Babylon 5 didn't make it, it's the best writing ever in a multi season show in english speaking TV IMO, among my top 2 english TV series together with Breaking Bad. Suffers from bad acting and dated special effects but it's greatness shines through these flaws. Among my top 12 English TV shows, 11 made it, among my top anime shows, only 1 made it but they are obviously obscure to everybody besides anime buffs. Among my top 2 Brazilian soup operas, none made it but they are probably less accessible to English speaking audiences than anime or maybe not: A guy from Albania said that his friends were addicted to O Clone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXC7y_GJNxU
Although overall soup operas suffer from overacting, bad direction and bad quality writing given they make 200 episodes in 300 days! Still, some manage to transcend these limitations and become great shows despite the low quality on a per frame basis (if compared to Breaking Bad, for example).

Yeah, it kind of sucks how Babylon 5 gets lost in the shuffle when it comes to talking about great shows. A lot of comments in this thread were pointing out how shows like The Wire or Game of Thrones wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for The Sopranos, but personally it's hard not to think about how Babylon 5 provided a blueprint for The Sopranos itself through its tendency to build complex multi-season arcs over consecutive episodes (The X-Files was arguably doing the same thing, but its main storyline was always stretched out by the various "monster of the week" episodes, which notably became fewer and fewer on Babylon 5). I guess the space opera setting is enough to make a mass audience write it off as a cheesy Star Trek knockoff.

Babylon 5 still has the best writing on any English speaking TV show I remember watching. But that's because best means "geekiest". It talks about a huge number of sci fi themes like how wwe see ants in the same way more advanced civilizations might see us. I love that kinda of stuff.
I plan to watch all of Firefly because it's one of the few major English speaking sci fi shows which I haven't watched more than 10 episodes of.

I've seen a few episodes of each of these shows, but I don't really care for either of them. I pretty much only watch talk shows when there's a guest that I like on the show, and even then, I usually only watch their segment.
I'm glad to see that "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (2013) was on the one point list. I didn't vote for it because it's too new, and it hasn't really proven it's legacy yet, but I love the show, and I haven't missed an episode since it premiered.

God, I never understood what was so great about Friends.
I also tried to watch Cheers one night not too long ago and didn't get the appeal.
I never got all the love for Friends either.
Hey Guap - The first season of Buffy is pretty rough. If you have given up on watching the whole run, which is totally understandable, I would request that you watch the season 4 finale, Restless. That one episode shows the creativity and depth of the show's creators, and also pokes fun at the show itself, which Buffy was known to do from time to time. I think that would give you a much better idea of how good that show could be. I am not a big fan of the initial episodes of that show, really. I think you will appreciate Restless a whole lot more. It's just 40 minutes and then you are done!

You know what I find interesting about the old Outer Limits is was heavily influenced by the times that it was made. Many of the alien threats on the show come in the form of conspiracies. You can really since the Red Fear of the early 60s in that show.
I had PC problems before this finished so i was unable to comment on the top two.
The Simpsons was as high as 9 on my initial list, but after thinking about it i decided not to include it. Not sure who it was but someone brought up the point that everyone complaining about The Simpsons consistency probably hasn't watched it since the 90's. No idea if this is the case for anyone else, but i can insure everyone that i've seen plenty of Season 11- and the show has been approaching unwatchable for years. Season 2-10 was some of the finest tv ever produced (Season 4 and 6 in particular is something i could watch at any time) .
Clearly this will receive backlash but South Park has flowed alot better imo at least, it's went from the weak point of the show S1-3, to the peak S4-12, and S13- has managed to squeeze into the middle quality-wise with the occasional classic. Which outside the genius of Trey and Matt is due to them changing the formula of the show, something The Simpsons have stubbornly avoided doing. I mean how long was the family having an adventure littered with Pop Culture references ever going to last? As i've said elsewhere The Simpsons has morphed into a show without a heart, that seems more like a vehicle for comedy writers towards bigger things.
I'll post my thoughts on Breaking Bad either later or in the next few days.

1. Lost
2. Friends
3. My So-Called Life
4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
5. Angel
6. Little House on the Prairie
7. Big Vang Theory
8. The X-Files
9. Will & Grace
10. ER
11. Roseanne
12. The Office
13. The Muppet Show
14. King of the Hill
15. 30 Rock
16. The Office (USA)
17. M*A*S*H
18. Game of Thrones
19. The Wire
20. Breaking Bad
21. The Walking Dead
22. Hannibal
23. The Mindy Project
24. Futurama
25. Charmed
I was the only one to vote for My So-Called Life. :(
So sad the Muppet Show didn't make it. I didn't figure many people would vote for Little House on the Praire, but it's such a great iconic show.
Breaking Bad is an excellent show, but in hindsight i think i may have had it a little bit too high at 11. While i loved it i haven't had a desire to rewatch it since it finished, and whoever it was that said it wouldn't top a list in five years brought up a very interesting point.
Anyway my list:
1.The Sopranos
2.South Park
3.Mad Men
4.The Wire
5.Sons of Anarchy
6.community
7.It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
8.Arrested Development
9.Dexter
10.Lost
11.Breaking Bad
12.Deadwood
13.The Shield
14.Twin Peaks
15.The Good Wife
16.Batman TAS
17.Only Fools and Horses
18.American Horror Story
19.Fawlty Towers
20.QI
21.Curb Your Enthusiasm
22.The X Files
23.The Killing (US)
24.The Twilight Zone
25.Friends
The only one i'd change now is The Killing, in hindsight i think i only included it because it wa the show i was into at the time. I'd probably include Frasier or Peep Show in it's place.

I was one of the people that said that, but now I'm not so sure. Number one, I doubt it unless they can't come up with some hot new show in the next five years, but maybe the top ten still. I think maybe I underestimated it a tad.
I continued reading a bit after I was done with the list and I think the newness of it factored into it's number one position somewhat, but I think it will stand the test of time better than I once thought.

7. "Big Vang Theory"?
Is that the vampire version of "The Big Bang Theory"?

:) That would be an interesting take on the show.

I think it would still be top 10 in say five years, but if this list was done the year after The Sopranos or The Wire was done they would've both fared much better and had a strong chance at #1 imo.
Out of interest will this list be added to the List section Yoda?

So what I said about True Detective earlier was completely wrong. Great show, would have made my list for sure. I've bought Twin Peaks too and The Wire, will be watching them at some point.
Edit, also bought Firefly. Great show, can someone explain to me wtf Fox were thinking cancelling it?
