Ok boys and girls… we have arrived at the start of The MoFo Comic Book And Graphic Novel Movies List Countdown.

Just want to say a huge thank you to the MoFos who offered to help me out with Excel before I taught myself how to use it, Skepsis93 and Mmmm Donuts, much appreciated, guys!!

Now, an even bigger thank you to all you MoFos out there that voted in the List to make it all possible.

I’ll be taking a slight deviation from the norm and will be posting 4 films per day, all the way down to the Top 20…

… then it’ll be 2 films per day from 20-05…

The Top 4 will be posted in one go…

… so it will only take about 1 month to get through the Countdown rather than the 50+ days it takes for the other Countdowns.

This has been so much more successful than I imagined at first. I was going to hold it as a Top 50…

… but the influx of votes over the past few months, and especially the week leading up to the deadline, has been awesome stuff, guys… and together we’ve got ourselves a Top 100 going on…

… thank you all so much for the input and for the support along the way and for being patient with me for the odd mistake and for telling a few of you that certain picks weren’t eligible causing a few rewrites.

Bear with me as I think I have the right posters for these… it took a clod-load of searching to get these posters together and then edit them for the list, so hopefully I got the right ones :D

Some were really hard to get hold of as well.

I’ll try to keep to the same time every day with the revealing of the list… but Saturday the 5th will be at a different time… I have a Wedding to attend so it will either be very early, or a bit later than the regular time… but it will be done on that day…

I checked this with Yoda beforehand:

I’d like to dedicate this list to my friend, who passed away on the 25th of January 2014, after a very long and very silent battle with her own inner Demons.

Even with all of her own problems, her beautiful personality made the world a better place.

She made you smile even though things were bad… and she could laugh and make others feel good, even when her own problems were getting the better of her… just because she could.

I never heard her complain about her own troubles, yet always she made my own problems seem better.

Even the day before her passing, she was posting funny pictures on Facebook, simply because she knew they would make people smile.

A Tea-Light in a Darkroom.

For my Friend Liz… a real Superhero.

So here it is…

Good to see this list get underway. Well done Rodent.

Not seen any of the first 4 movies. I've actually only heard of 1 of them.

I wasn't able to vote, because my knowledge of comic book films is too limited, but I'll definitely follow this to see if there are any films on the list that interest me.

I've only seen one of these so far. Fritz the Cat! It's a weird trip featuring drugs, profanity and a lot of sex and it claims to be some kind of satire of the '60s. Somehow it kind of worked for me. It's not a "great" film by any means, but it has some interesting stuff in it animation-wise and even content-wise, in my opinion.

I wonder who gave it 17 points...

Good luck with the rest of this list, Rodent! ;)

Thanks alot for taking the time to do this Rodent :) . Not much to say here because i haven't seen any of those. I've watched a couple of episodes of One Piece but it wasn't for me. Looking forward to the rest of the list  .

Woah, you're doing a HUNDRED of these?!? I was kinda scraping the barrel to get my twenty-five! I thought this was going to result in a top twenty or maybe a top fifty. But a hundred?!? Mmmmm, alright. Somebody give me a call when it hits the top ten or so.

Geesh.

Yeah 100... :D

I thought about 50, but we had over 150 films altogether by deadline so it'd be a shame to lose over 2/3 of the entries...

I've only seen Fritz The Cat myself out of the first lot... can't remember much about it tbh, I was pretty young when I saw it.

I haven't seen any of those movies, but I've read 4 of the comics (not really a fan of any of them). Well, I don't think I've read any of Azumi but I'm not positive.

Jim Jarmusch is a character in the Beck manga.

That would be me. It's probably the trashiest movie I've ever seen, but I love it.

Nice dedication for your friend Rodent. She must be missed a lot.

I'm well interested in reading your list. Although I don't read a lot of comics/graphic novels, I seem to have seen a lot of films based on them. I've seen Fritz the Cat and I'm pretty sure I've seen Azumi.

Like Holden I had reservations about you going to 100 (it was initially planned as 50 wasn't it?). I mean should a film with just one vote really get on the list? But we'll see how it goes.

That said - Fritz the Cat? Azumi? Beck? One Piece: Z? THESE AREN'T COMIC BOOK MOVIES!!!!

^ Just practicing my Sexy war cry. :D With my list though I just went pretty much full-on superheroes as that's what I think of when I hear comic book movies. So I'm waiting for the spandex to start showing up

The superhero films are much more famous so they will show up around the top 50. Given that there are not many good American superhero films (since there are not many American superhero films) you couldn't do a top 100 superhero film list, couldn't you?

I wanted to see From Up on Poppy Hill and Ninja Bugei-Chô, but I never got around to it. Superman Returns, on the other hand, I saw that one and wished I hadn't.

I liked Returns when I first saw it mainly through nostalgia and was impressed to start with when it comes to Routh but the novelty has dwindled a lot. Not keen on the film now but can still watch it after a night at the pub.

The only other one I've seen is Ghost In The Shell SAC... enjoyed it for what it was but not my kind of film.

It's on Jal90's favorite animations list as well. Too bad he didn't contribute with this countdown, his additional points would increase the ranking of Miyazaki's films. :D

I initially had Princess Mononoke very high, but i then found out it wasn't based on a manga. The only other Miyazaki i have seen is My Neighbour Totoro and i'm personally not a fan.

Never seen any of GITS, but i have a friend who loves it and pretty much owns it all, so i'll no doubt watch that at some point. Ninja Bugei-Chô also looks interesting, never heard of it but i'll look out for it. The only one i have seen is Superman Returns, no offence to anyone who voted for it but that movie is a certified turd, i love Superman but the only good scene in that movie is the part where he stops the plane at the start imo.

I wanted to see From Up on Poppy Hill and Ninja Bugei-Chô, but I never got around to it. Superman Returns, on the other hand, I saw that one and wished I hadn't.

That's what I think also. The top half becomes predictable and therefore sometimes a little boring. It may not be the case with this list.

Nothing from my list on there, although I doubt that's the only Ghost in the Shell to make it. ;)

Yeah 100... :D
I thought about 50, but we had over 150 films altogether by deadline so it'd be a shame to lose over 2/3 of the entries....
But to me this is like the NHL playoffs now. Practically EVERYbody got in, so who cares what films are on the list, until you get to the top of it? You should lose two-thirds of the list. Skepsis had 371 different titles submitted for the 1980s list. That means only 27% of the movies made it to the spotlight, which made both the countdown dramatic and also an accomplishment to make the cut. You are having closer to 65% of the comic book titles make it...so who cares? If you made your list the top fifty, that's about 33%, and much more in line with the percentage/prestige of the big decade lists. If you only named the top twenty-five, then it's only about 16% that are making the cut, and that's truly elite!

Another cue that your list is too long is that these first ones don't even have twenty-five points each, which means one person having them on their list has a flick make the cut. That's too broad. Another hint: Superman Returns is on the list, and that's a big piece of *****.

Put it this way, just go by the numbers: if Skepsis' 1980s list used the same percentage of entries you are using, it would have been The Top 241 Movies of the 1980s. And then who gives a fart? That's just silly.

I respect the enthusiasm, but I fear you've diluted the product. But, as you were. It's your list, Broseph.

I gave Ninja Bugeicho all of its points. Here's my review from The Movie Tab II (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=714702#post714702)

http://www.walrusmagazine.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/oshima.jpg

Manual of Ninja Arts (Ninja Bugei-cho) (Oshima Nagisa, 1967)
Kamishibai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamishibai)-style historical epic of Japanese ninja, Warlords and peasant rebellion based on a 1950s manga by Sampei Shirato, who began his storytelling career as a Kamishibai man himself, but became famous for his iconic ninja manga Kamui Den. This is something that will require a couple viewings just to get a sense of who's who, since there are a lot of characters and subplots. Furthermore, the style of the film -- which consists of stills of Shirato's art carefully panned or rhythmically sequenced to give a sense of motion and continuity -- is fast-paced and information-heavy both in the images and words. In other words it's not forgiving for subtitle readers. The story and politics are interesting and complicated and there are elements of man-made as well as phantasmagorical horror interlaced with humor, such as when one ninja gets decapitated and his head seemingly continues to laugh and live on for months and months (plus the spooky sequences are all accompanied by theramin sounds). All-in-all it's a pretty enjoyable and unique entry in the action genre and well worth checking out for those interested in comics, ninja-fiction or experimental animation.

Personally I think 100 movies is far better than 50. I'm on this site to find movies to watch so the more I find out about the better. A top 50 would just be a list of a bunch of movies I've probably already seen. Whilst that would be valid as a "top" list it would be much less interesting IMO.

Well, by that logic we should post every film, no? We have threads for recommendations, of course--lists are something else. They're ostensibly for quantifying the films we like best as a group. And besides, the lists usually come with a "Those Receiving Votes" addendum afterwards, anyway. So I don't think the mere possibility of discovery is really in keeping with the idea, nor is it necessarily hurt at all by the size of the list, provided the organizer makes them all available (which they usually do).

Yeah I'll be posting up the 55 that didn't make it at the very end so everyone can see the rest...

After all the wrestling I did with my thoughts this was the reckoning I had:

I just felt losing over 70% of the entries by doing a Top 50, would have made the list a bit short and a bit anti-climax, especially after the 6 month build-up...

Ok, the bottom of the list is made up of films with only one or two voters... but for all the input that was put into the list, not just from me organising it, but from the 35 who submitted lists, I wanted to showcase a nice broad range of choices and a broader range than just going for the Top 50 picks, which I think everyone probably knows what they'll be already, you just don't know the order...

The bottom end of the list will keep it fresh and surprising, maybe open a few eyes to new films as well, before we get to the cream of the crop and the order they're in.

That was my thinking for going with the 100 anyways...

The Rodent
04-02-14, 05:19 PM

I guess I don't see the distinction. If you want the list to be longer because you want to hear about more films I'm not sure why that reasoning would arbitrarily stop at 100.

The Rodent
04-02-14, 05:25 PM
It is also, I should add, the reason I went for revealing 4 per day all the way down to the Top 20... it gets the lower end of the list shown, yet doesn't take up too much time.

Kind of a hypocritical thing with everything I said about including the 1 & 2 vote films, but I kinda expected people to mention including them. So I am thinking about you guys on both sides ;)

Don't fret too much though guys, spoiler alert... Sunday is the day the Top 80 begins and will be the day it starts getting really interesting...

I don't think the build-up matters too much; I think that was one of the best decisions you made! :) Better to wait a bit longer and have a better list than finish with too few votes and get a lot of random movies very few people voted for. It was a great call. Expanding the list, though, has exactly the opposite effect.

Obviously, 50 is smaller, but then, so is the pool of available films--dramatically so. Probably a lot more than half, even. The AFI's list of musicals is only 25, for precisely the same reason. I don't find a list of 50 less grand. Kinda more, actually, since the level of quality in each entry should be very high.

Anyway, it's certainly your list and like everyone else I'm grateful for the work you've put into it. Just throwing in my opinion. :) These things are spontaneously organized and managed so there's been trial and error through the whole process; no shame in us all collectively learning how to make them better and more fun as time goes on.

I think the issue stems from thinking of 100 as a "standard" length. There's nothing special about it, though--it's just a round number that works pretty well given what's being measured in the other lists. Switching that to 50 (or anything else) is only arbitrary if there's not a sensible reason for doing so. In this case, the reason would be to roughly correlate the list size to the pool of total films to choose from. You would never do a top 100 of February, 1992, for example.

I get your preference and your reasoning for it (though again, you'd hear about the films either way), I just don't see why it would become null and void at 100. The sentiment only makes sense, I think, if you're actually balancing that reasoning against others.

I do think a Top 50 or even a Top 25 would have been better. The issue is the fact that you started collecting lists from people for this back in 2010, so after all of that wait, we might as well see 100 films. If it had been a Top 50 or Top 25, the list collection time period should have been much shorter.

Batman & Robin, too? You've made this list ridiculous, as in literally subjected it to ridicule, by making it a top hundred. Truly. One person votes for a piece of ***** like Batman & Robin and it makes the list? Now I don't think I even care what the top ones are, anymore.

Fans of genre films, be they sci-fi, super heroes, horror, or whatever, are so often walking around with a metaphorical chip on their shoulders, like how dare the rest of you squares not give my genre its due! And there is a kernel of truth to that sentiment, as genre films generally don't get a lot of respect from the mainstream. But part of the problem is exactly this kind of list. Many of you bitch and cry, perhaps even rightly so, when The Dark Knight doesn't make the cut for Oscar's Best Picture or whatever, but then you can turn around and hold up Superman Returns and Batman & Robin as somehow quality films? Which is what inclusion on such a list implies. Until genre fans have the backbone to call the ***** of their genre ***** and not reflexively and defensively hold it up as gold because the uptight art snobs just don't get comic books, you are devaluing your own argument for the films that truly are great and do deserve respect.

I am not a big fan of these types of superhero movies at all, and I do understand that just my vote for Batman & Robin is silly, but that movie was entertaining and memorable and probably was the best early Batman movie for me. Only The Dark Knight might be better, in my opinion. Those Tim Burton Batman movies were boring and stupid. Joel Schumacher all the way. Oh, how I wanted a 5th Batman movie from Joel Schumacher.

As far as I'm concerned, though, not every comic book movie will make this list (I imagine), and I do stomp my feet to the idea that Batman & Robin is a very good movie -- my opinion is highly expert. So this list is so far accurate. I had the movie high on the list. It's important to the genre.

I disliked the first three x-men movies, they have zero staying power, much like the iron man of the era before the comic book explosion, and the third one was an abomination, ruining characters new and old, a true logical abyss.

Several little leagues don't bother keeping score nowadays because they don't want hurt anyone's feelings by having a winner and a loser. This list is a lot like that. If you're a movie based on a comic book--- congratulations, you get a trophy!

There are many movies based on comic books (in anime there are like hundreds of great movies listed as books such as this: http://www.amazon.com/500-Essential-Anime-Movies-Ultimate/dp/0061474509/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396579308&sr=8-1&keywords=500+essential+anime+films). The problem is that most of them are obscure so that movies that are recognized such as Batman and Robin, manage to make the cut. In other words, some people didn't have top 25 lists that they loved (like Holden Pike said, he didn't know 25 movies based on comic books that he loved to make his list but he submitted a list anyway) so movies that are well known got a lot of votes.

BATMAN AND ROBIN!!!!!!!!!????

Well, it's like Dune maybe: so bad, but so bad, that it becomes great. In a sense, it's an exceptional movie.

I am worried about movies that are not so bad, but just bad but nothing historical bad proportion like Batman and Robin, movies like Fantastic Four and X-Men 3. These movies are truly worthless because they don't work at all while Batman and Robin at least is so bad, but so bad, it is memorable.

Well, you contributed to a top 25, and now complain that the list is cr*p even though you contributed to it and did not find 25 movies that you love, hence adding cr*p points to the list:

Woah, you're doing a HUNDRED of these?!? I was kinda scraping the barrel to get my twenty-five! I thought this was going to result in a top twenty or maybe a top fifty. But a hundred?!? Mmmmm, alright. Somebody give me a call when it hits the top ten or so.

I got a lot of respect for your knowledge and love for movies and THOROUGHLY enjoy and look forward to all your future reviews, but i gotta say: this rant is a little overboard.

After all, this isn't a "cry for respect", it is, like all other lists, a list of FAVS. Made for fun, to share lists and bring up movies that many of us wouldn't have heard of, and others we can all admit stink or have some secret love of.
And since it is all in fun, pissing on it like you have only comes off petty.
I don't know you, but, like i've said, I respect your knowledge of movies and I would like to think better of you than what this post illustrates.

As for the whole "Why 100?" Why not? Every other list is 100, why not keep it consistent? There are sh*t movies in EVERY bottom section of every list... is it so horrorific that there's some here?

We now return you to the regular programming, thank you,

Well, you contributed to a top 25, and now complain that the list is cr*p even though you contributed to it and did not find 25 movies that you love, hence adding cr*p points to the list:
This doesn't really make sense, for two reasons. First, because not loving a film isn't the same thing as it being crappy. And second, because the whole point is that on a shorter list the films that just barely make lists like his probably wouldn't show up on it.

That's a bit inconsistent.
No it isn't; the opposite (having trouble filling out a list, but also wanting the list to be really long) would be inconsistent. Having a little trouble filling out a list and therefore thinking the list should be shorter is entirely consistent.

Yoda
04-04-14, 01:31 AM

I don't think this is what he's saying at all. The issue isn't that some people may list cheezy favorites they happen to love--that always happens. The issue is whether or not the list is constructed so that just one person doing this ensures that a film is included. If six people had Batman & Robin in their top 10 it it would have earned its place by something resembling a consensus. I'm sure people would still say it was a ridiculous choice--because it's a God awful movie--but that sentiment would be aimed at the voters, and not the process.

As for the whole "Why 100?" Why not? Every other list is 100, why not keep it consistent?
Because it's drawing on a much, much smaller pool of films. And because there's no inherent value in keeping the list size consistent.

Sorry to keep replying to this stuff, but it just feels like everybody responding to this stuff is completely misunderstanding the complaint.

Not a fan of X3 never have been, but it's much better than that piece of crap Daredevil imo. I have seen neither Green Lantern or Spawn , but i remember watching an animated Spawn tv series when i was a kid that i really enjoyed.

I'd rank them the same way, except flip Lantern and Daredevil. I saw Green Lantern in the theater, because I was invited. I actually became physically ill during the show and left the theater. Some may say that the movie had nothing to do with it, but I can't be 100% sure.

That's the end of my single shot contribution to this list. It was nominated for animated feature of the year in the Japanese academy awards in 2012:

2012[15] - From Up on Poppy Hill
K-On!
Buddha
Tōfu-kozō
Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence

From Up on Poppy Hill won though (it's slightly superior and I agree), haven't watched the other 3 films nominated.

The crappy dubbed trailer of the original TV series (the film is exactly identical to the TV series, like 4 episodes clumped together with slightly better animation):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5bCVTUaFvk.

K-On is basically cuteness for adults aggressively pursued. Nothing is so incredibly aggressively cute even though it's not as affecting as the more natural cuteness of Miyazaki's Totoro, Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service. It's one of the greatest TV series ever made IMO though the film may be regarded as weaker given it lacks the continuous development of the TV series.

This one is a great one, it's in Jal90's top animations list (at around the 25th place), it's a great animated film, it's about 3 hours long and is on youtube. Like K-On is based on a TV series but in this case the original TV series was much inferior to the film (while on K-On's case I think that the TV series was better).

Who the hell would vote for Green Lantern or X3

Well, that's what happens when you have only watched like around 40 comic book movies, if you make a top 25 you will need to include even the stuff you found below average. I think that I have watched around ca. 100 movies based on comics and even then, some movies in my top 25 weren't exactly masterpieces (I think that only 5 of the movies in my top 25 list can be regarded as genuine masterpieces).

Sexy voting for Batman & Robin is why we can't have nice things. :(

I think that at least we can regard Batman and Robin to be something special because it's historically awful. While plain mediocre movies like X-Men 3 and Daredevil are completely worthless in any way: they are not good and not bad enough to be memorable.
