Better than Priscilla being the number 1 in your 70s list.

Which, incidentally, stars Terence Stamp of Young Guns.

Blue is the Warmest Color is great - number 3 on my list. Ghost World was my number 11 and Scott Pilgrim number 22.

To paraphrase Guapo, Blue is the Warmest Color is a nice traditional pornographic lesbian romance. :)

Red A funny, slick action film that managed to surprise me. Willis actually seems to be enjoying himself here. Malkovich steals the show with his LSD tripped out conspiracy theorist and Karl Urban is a underrated favourite of mine.

Blade II Just as enjoyable as the original. Del Toro's heavy influence of anime is pretty clear here and I've had fun times revisiting it again and again. The one downfall is the poor use of CGI for human fight sequences, they look way too phoney.

TMNT A childhood favourite that manages to stay fresh and exciting. Very few films capture New York, I honestly believe this is one of them.

Dick Tracy The colours!!! My God the colours!!! Take the "classic" gangster genre and insert the comics bright colour palette. Beatty, Pacino, Madonna and a small cameo from Dustin Hoffman. Dick Tracy is a film that I need to watch again.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Well I'm glad it made it fairly high up although it's at least like 32 places too low!!! As many people will know the Turtles is a film that has a great place in my heart. As such I had it at #2 on my list.

Here's my 5 star (yes that's right, 5 stars!!!) review from a month or so back. - JayDee loves him some Turtles (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1059369#post1059369)

And for anyone who can't be bothered to go to the actual review here are a couple of childhood pics I finished it off with. Man I used to be so cute! What the f*ck happened?!!!

The Rodent

Well, we're into the Top 30 now, only 11 more reveals to go...

The Top 20 (starts on Monday) will have a slight difference, it'll be 2 films per day rather than 4, all the way up to the Top 4 then the Top 4 will be posted in one go (as I said in the OP)... the layout is the same but I'm also adding how many times the films got into Voters' Top 10s and #1 Spots.
Just a little extra info for the Top 20 :)

Been a quick Countdown going with 4 at a time. Only takes 29 days.

Deadite

I'd also like to mention that while Dark Knight will undoubtedly rule this roost, The Crow certainly deserves a top 5 spot.

Also V For Vendetta is awesome and underrated, even by Alan Moore. He's mean. :(

I bid you Turtle Power.

I had similar thoughts when I first popped into the thread. It's best not to look at this as a list of top movies, so much as a game of what everyone playing comes up with in the end. It is more of a Top 25 best films of the genre, and Top 75 most popular films of the genre, revealed simultaneously and gradually.

rauldc14
04-18-14, 09:55 AM
The first Iron Man is leap years ahead of the second. But the second is still a classic comic movie.

Wow, I can't believe Men in Black is this low. It's low enough that I'm expecting a few people will come in here and do the whole "oh, I didn't know that was eligible!" thing.

I had it second on my list. One of the things I love most about the movie is how many different levels it operates on. It works as a funny, exciting romp, which is what I mainly took from it when I was younger and saw it in theaters. But it's also profound and insightful, which I was delighted to notice more and more as I rewatched it over time.

A film this superficially goofy has no business being this well written. I can't believe how well-written some of it is, though I imagine it'd be obvious if you stripped away the subject matter. And I haven't even gotten into the casting. I keep editing this post because it never feels like I'm properly conveying how I feel about it, which I guess, in its own way, says it as well as any of my attempts.

Great movie. 5

Yeah, even with the number of awful movies revealed thus far and their placements, seeing Men in Black this low is just ridiculous. It was number fourteen on my list (twelve points). And though I love The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp, I didn't include it as originating from a comic, by my own standard, since it really only borrowed the title.

That's twelve of mine, so far. I expect all but one or two of mine to make it, actually.

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow.

Beatrice: You here to make fun of me too?
Kay: No, ma'am. We at the FBI do not have a sense of humor we're aware of. May we come in?

Men in Black is number 11 for me. It was and still is in my opinion, despite the trash of sequels it produced, fresh and exciting. Smith's the perfect mix to blend with the serious Tommy Lee Jones. They work well off each other when Smith was still breaking into the Summer Blockbuster thing. While Independence Day was a huge blockbuster, I feel that Men in Black cemented Smith as a bona fide star.

Congratulations, Reg. It's a... squid.

It pains me to see it lumped in the same batch with Iron Man 2. Everyone involved in that film agree that it was a rush job and nothing more. Hell, I wish Blade II and TMNT were higher than Iron Man 2.

SC, I'd be glad about that, it means there's more chance to have your films higher up. Not saying they are or aren't, but my point is this:
Why are people so desperate to see their films appear immediately the countdown starts? Surely it'd be better not to see them and have them higher up the list?

I have had an idea for one though, a Movie Alien Top (*insert number here*).
If it's an alien in a movie, it's eligible.

After this Comics list though, I don't think I'll do another Countdown for a few years at least.

The Rodent
04-20-14, 02:00 PM
This was an idea I was playing with... if anyone wants to take it up, go for it but I won't be taking on another Countdown for a long time.

We are not alone...

E.T: The Extra Testicle, the Predator, the Xenomorph, a giant singing Flytrap in Mr Mushnik’s flower shop, those annoying Mr Fixit mini-saucers in Batteries Not Included, Mac from Mac And Me or Master Yoda himself.
Aliums are everywhere, at least on the Big Screen anyway, and every great sci-fi movie of the past 60+ years has had an off-world life form of one kind or another.

The big question on everyone’s lips right now is:
Which Alien is the most badassest of badasses, the most loveable of er, luvvie-ables (?)… the mostest bestest all round Alien when it comes to, well, being an Alien?

Well, ok, maybe it’s not the big question right now, but it will be the big question once this Tourney is up and running.

Have a gander here for ideas… of course, there are hundreds of other webpages to go over though…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_featuring_extraterrestrials

… then have a think… I needs thou votes.

Rules:

Top 20 format… kinda similar to the recent MoFo Millennium Tourney and the 1990s Tourney held by Brodinski and Harry Lime, each voter picks their Top 20 Aliens that appear in Films… basically, if it has been in a film, it is an Alien, and you like him/her/it, it counts.

… 20th place on your list receives 1 point, and your #1 Alien receives 20 points.

Simply copy and paste this, fill it out with the name of the Alien, the full title of the film that it was in and the year the film was made and send it to me in a PM:

05th:
04th:
03rd:
02nd:
01st Alien:

Like with all other Tourneys, do not post your lists prematurely for everyone to see… :)

Voting closes ***, which gives us all exactly ** months to get lists together and post them in to me… the countdown will begin as soon as I have the numbers counted up and verified which will probably take me a day or two.

Whether this ends up as a Top 100, a Top 50 or, Heaven forbid, a measly Top 20, all depends on how many voters take part, so we need as many voters as possible to make sure as many non-human asskickers and rib-ticklers in the vast Universe gets a look in to fight it out in the ultimate showdown of Alien Badassery.

Forget those pathetic attempts at AvP… this, is where the real showdown is really at…

WOW, quite a few from my list made it these last two rounds.

The Crow What more can I say about this beautifully realized gothic tale? It has one of the best comic book film performances from Brandon Lee, it has some of the best set pieces of a bygone art form (miniatures) and it simply kicks ass. Alex Proyas struck gold with this film and continued on the gothic path with Dark City, one of my favourite sci/fi films of all time.

Blade I wrote about how much I love Blade II, that goes double for Blade. I must have worn out my VHS copy of this film when I was younger. I just thought he was such a bad ass cool character. That opening sequence is one of the best opening sequences to an action film I've ever seen. I love this flick, even the goofy looking special effects.

300 Zack Snyder might have managed to remake a cult classic with Dawn of the Dead and NOT screw it up, but it was 300 that gave him his signature style and made him a sought after director. Not only that, but it made a star out of Gerard Butler and gave us a line that had so many movie fans quoting and kicking that it deserves a place on this list.

Hellboy Yes Hellboy. I'm not IN LOVE with this film, nor am I in love with the sequel. My biggest problem with both films is that they are GOOD. They serve the material, they serve the genre and I always seemed to want a bit more out of both entries. Why is it on my list if I'm just okay with the film? Well, that honour goes to Ron Perlman, who knocks it out of the park as the titled character.

Superman While I give credit to X-Men for kick starting the current Superhero genre, you have to hand it to the original. Superman is a classic comic book adaptation that many have failed to imitate. I love the sequel just as much, but if I had to pick one, I pick the one with the absurd time travel plot line that no one likes.

Kick Ass Finally we have Kick Ass. Who doesn't love a film that has a violent, foul mouthed little girl shooting, chopping and simply kicking ass. So much cursing and killing that Roger Ebert detests this movie. Sometimes the critic got em wrong and he got this one wrong folks. This is a fun film.

The Rodent
04-21-14, 01:23 AM
The layout has been set for the past 3 weeks and you're only now saying something.

Yep... two a day up to 5th place then the Top 4 are done in one go... it helps with numbers and only takes 9 days. Other Countdowns by now would be in the middle of the list, if I went by the usual standard today's reveal (in a few hours from now) would just be starting the Top 40... 40th and 39th, with a massive 20 days still to go.

Sexy Celebrity
04-21-14, 01:26 AM
I know, but it's a weird pacing issue for me. We've been doing 4 a day, now suddenly we're gonna do two a day until the final four?

Big deal that we're at #20 and things like Batman & Robin won't be showing up. I'd rather keep going with the pace we were at. No reason, really, to slow down now. Especially if the last four are gonna be revealed on one day.

The Rodent
04-21-14, 01:31 AM
It's all about the third act :D

We've had act 1, the build up (100-61).
Then the main story and surprises for act 2 (60-21).
It's now all about act 3, some tension leading to the reveal and the finish (20-01).

Sexy Celebrity
04-21-14, 01:35 AM
Well, apparently, this movie here you're making already had Acts 1 and 2 ruined by things like Batman & Robin and Tank Girl, according to others. Now you're just gonna drag ass during Act 3? The critics will tear you apart.

Hooray for Persepolis! I wouldn't have pegged it to be higher than Ghost World or American Splendor among the non-superhero crowd, but nice that it placed more than respectibly. Two great books, and a very good movie adaptation.

Persepolis was fourth on my list (twenty-two points). That makes thirteen of mine (Dick Tracy, Mystery Men, The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, Men in Black, Hugo, American Splendor, Ghost World, The Rocketeer, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Conan the Barbarian, and Where the Wild Things Are).

Watching Dredd was a good time; I had it at #18 and that's 13 movies from my list. It looks like I'll have 22 or 23 movies from my list. That's nothing to be proud of, it just means that I've mostly only seen the popular ones. There's 2 that I voted for that I was sure would make it but can't picture showing up now. Well, maybe one of them.

I think at this point it's safe for me to reveal the two movies on my list that don't have a chance at making the list.

At #25, I had Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in Peril. It's my second favorite of the series. A lot of people here said they didn't love the bottom part of their list, but I can personally say I didn't have that problem. It actually kind of pained me not to have more Lone Wolf and Cub films on my list, but I couldn't cut the things I had above it.

At #14, I had Barbarella. I think it's safe to say that it won't show up now, and that's a real shame. It's more fun than the '66 Batman, and kind of the reason I cut Batman off the tail-end of my list. I didn't need it anymore, I had Barbarella.

Slightly surprised to see that Spider-Man managed to land so high on the list. Even though it's only 12 years old so many superhero films have been released since then that it tends to kind of get forgotten at times. Anyway it was on my list, though I perhaps placed it slightly higher than I would these days. So many rewatches have lesssened its impact on me somewhat but decided to have it reflect how I used to feel about it a bit more. Same with the first X-Men.

I still don't think I've ever seen Akira all the way through. Tried to a couple of times and caught bits and pieces here and there but never managed to really get into it and all the way through.

Anyway others that were on my list - Dredd, The Crow, X-Men, Hellboy, Kick-Ass, Batman Returns. Not sure at what numbers as can't locate my list at the moment.

I had X-Men: First Class as my number twenty (six points). It's the only one of the X-Men movies so far that I have loved. The others are various degrees of watchable, with X2 being my favorite of that crop, but First Class really is first class. The melding of the two casts with time travel this summer will make a bazillion dollars and be fine, I'm sure, but I would have preferred they just stay in the 1960s and keep this group going, introducing more mutants, without worring about linking up with the other movies. Oh, well.

Great movie, a masterpiece of action. Slightly inferior to Nausicaa because of it's relative lack of emotional depth (I usually find Otomo's work to be the least emotionally powerful among the big names of manga, the manga is also great but I also did not connect with it in the same way I connected with Lone Wold and Cub, 20th Century Boys and Nausicaa).

Definitely surprised that First Class isn't top 10. More recent films tend to have a slight edge, all else being equal, and it's definitely one of the better comic book movies ever made. I had it exactly 10th.

While I wouldn't consider one of the best comic book movies it is certainly better than the other X-Men movies and far superior to the average comic book movie. I don't think I would rate The Dark Knight higher than it.

I don't know about that. Akira is very emotional. There is a lot of anxiety, anger, and fear. Especially from Tetsuo. Akira also really shined in its psychological and philosophical themes about the origin of the universe. It's been a while though, I really need to watch Nausicaa again. Both are great movies.

I really like V for Vendetta quite a bit, and it's one of the rare circumstances where deviating and updating from the original text actually served the movie very well, while wisely remaining faithful enough the tone and intent of the book to pull it off. Yup, it's a good'un. On my list. Number seventeen, nine points.

I can even understand the appeal for movies like Twilight for certain kind of people. It's not because I don't like something that I can't see why some other people may like it, even if they are "wrong" according to my opinion.

04-25-14, 08:19 PM
I find the character of V rather tragic and compelling, and I enjoyed the bit of ambiguity in how he is presented which brings to mind the saying "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". Of course to me V was clearly a hero compared to the oppressive fascism he opposed, yet he still was a kind of monster himself. I also liked the ways in which Evey's "rebirth" paralleled his, as he questionably pushed her to become a truly free individual, not merely defined into a victim mentality as another slave to The State.

Plus the fights were coooool.

V was number 15 on my list.

Strangely I've never seen an X-Men movie in full. I saw about 20 minutes of the one with Kevin Bacon about 10 times while I was on a cruise. It looked pretty good so I've always thought about watching them but never have. This might sound stupid but the naming of them has always made me think I need to look up what order to watch them in and then I think "it's all too hard, I'm going to watch something else".

I will watch them one day :)

04-25-14, 09:17 PM
Just watch X Men and X2. First Class is a prequel, but it works on its own I think. The rest are inferior and optional.

JayDee
04-25-14, 10:01 PM
That's another 2 from my list. V for Vendetta at #15 and X2 at #7. I think X2 is a little unfortunate not to make the top 10. I think that's another that because it's now so 'old' in superhero film terms people tend to forget about it but for me it remains one of the best of the genre.

That's the last 5 in a row actually that I voted for.

I love X Men: First Class, and I had it as my #2 pick. I watched it for the hell of it on cable, and it showed me that there was more to these movies than just dorks running around in silly suits. It's the movie that got me interested in these types of films.
