View Full Version : The MoFo Top Comic Book & Graphic Novel Movies Countdown
Ugh. Not a great fan of Batman, with Nicholson's mugging being the main reason.
You are dead to me. I am PM Sexy to see if I can change my MoFo list as we speak, or as I type.
I watched 89's Batman but couldn't get into it. Nicholson was fine but Kim Basinger's character was extremely annoying since half her lines consisted high pitched shrieks and Keaton let his eyebrows do most of the acting for him. It wasn't horrible but Returns and Nolan's trilogy are much better IMO.

Nicholson's mugging was my favorite thing about it. Batman looked like a munchkin and the romance was juvenile.

 MoFo list? What's been going on that I've missed now?

Sc started a top 100 mofos countdown thread. Then he started it before giving everyone enough time to make a proper list to turn in.
I used to say that I liked Batman more than Batman Returns, but after watching them more recently I realised I only really liked Jack Nicholson's performance. Keaton and Basinger act kinda monotone and almost lethargic.

I had Watchmen at #25.
The funny thing is I still haven't even seen all of it, yet. But I will eventually. I own it. I just needed something else to put down.

I had Spider-Man 2 as my #19.
I like Oldboy but not enough to vote for it. I may have to try it again.
Had both on my list. Oldboy was my #4.

I liked Thor the best out of the other Marvel films. Glad to see Burton's Batman make it onto the top ten as well as Watchmen. Spiderman 2 is the best Spiderman film to date and I don't see the upcoming flicks knocking it off that spot anytime soon.
My #22 will not be in the top ten, that's for sure, so I feel okay letting it slip here. Constantine. It's sad that trash like Batman & Robin make this list and decent stuff like that are left off.

Yeah, no --- Constantine is trash. I saw it once. At the movies. It about killed me. Thankfully most of my memory of the film has vanished, but I remember how much I hated it.

Oldboy was my number 1. Didn't see Spider-Man 2 in time but if I did it wouldn't have mattered - watched it since and I thought all of the Maguire Spider-Man movies were pretty bad.

Weird Science (1985) I thought this would definitely make it.

Bullet to the Head (2012) I thought SC may vote for this since I watched it based on a good review of his.

I had the first Iron Man as my number thirteen (thirteen points). And I should have all of the remaining top four on my list, which isn't really all that surprising, I suppose?
The two from my list of twenty-five that didn't make it were Flash Gordon, which I gave a fun, cheesy, single point from my #25 position, and The Rabbi's Cat, which I think is wonderful, but I guess because it was made by the French and not the Japanese, it had no real shot of making the cut? It's a really good comic and adaptation, for those who haven't bothered to ever read/watch it. I had it at number twenty-two on my list. Did anybody else vote for it, or were my four points all that one got?

Iron Man was my #2. I dont remember where I put Rises but know it was top 5. I love it. I think if it wasnt the sequel to what most consider the best comic adaptation ever it wouldn't get so much grief. I usually love origin stories the most in a series but with Nolan's Batman, Begins was my least favorite. Still fantastic though.
Ok,here is update,I'm sure Constantine won't be in here so yea,I forgot some titles that would replace Constantine easy but well, too late now. So here it is,TDKR,Iron Man and Constantine.

Couple of big favourites recently. Iron Man I had at #3. And Spider-Man 2 was at #4. Oldboy would have made my list but didn't consider it as was concentrating almost solely on superheroes. And Dark Knight Rises was not on my list, and really don't think it deserves to be anywhere near as high.
That aside got to say I'm loving the list. Best list we've ever done.

Iron Man and The Dark Knight Rises?
http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/MoFoPics/joaqdisapproves.gif
Iron Man was my #4, and it came pretty close to getting itself nudged up even higher.
The success of this film is a great example of how the preexisting fame of the hero is incidental. A good story can be written around pretty much any of them, though it obviously helps if you can land one of the most ridiculously successful actor-to-role matches imaginable. I didn't think much of it when I heard it, because superhero films before were largely driven by the nature of the hero themselves, so I was inherently interested in Batman, and inherently disinterested in heroes like Iron Man. The elevator pitch about their powers and origins was, for a long time, the most important thing.

This is the one that also put everyone on notice about what Marvel was up to; especially with the ending, which tells us that this one's going to be different. This one's going to have continuity and serialization and isn't going to reset after each installment. That was a revelation, and it's something they've followed through on since.

Quite a lot of negativity to TDKR... seeing as it made 22 out of 35 lists...
... and 13 of those 22 had it in their Top 10, one of them was #1...
I had it in 2nd :D
Oh, and yeah, I'll toss in some negativity for TDKR, too. ;)
I guess it's a testament to Nolan's trilogy that, as disappointed as I was by that film, it still found its way onto the back of my list. But it's part of a larger whole, so I think it's fair to compare it to its predecessors a little, and think about what could have been. In a vacuum, still pretty good, and obviously some of its individual elements are exceptional. But on the whole, I think most of the emotional power it has is coasting on all the investment poured into the other two films.
The Rodent

I found Rises to be a better film than TDK.
TDK gets a lot of praise through Heath Ledger... and I agree that he rocked the film, by far one of the best performances in any film... but if you removed that performance from the film and replaced it with another actor doing a different Joker, would the film, as a whole, be as lauded as it is?
Prediction for the remaining four:
4. Batman Begins
3. Sin City
2. The Avengers
1. The Dark Knight
I can see 3 and 4 or 1 and 2 switching. But I'll be pretty surprised if those aren't at the top together.

What a horrible list! :D All 25 from my list are on it, and I will have seen 81. I know it goes against my film-watching ethos, but I'm not going out of my way to see the other 19, but Ill see a few. :)

I think it's knowhere near as good as the previous 2. It's obvious it was just thrown together for the money. It had a very weak, and lazy story. I mean a ticking timebomb, is that really Nolan?.

Yea it was made only cuz of money, because Nolan didn't want to make 3rd movie after Heath died but they pushed him into creating it,that is biggest reason for TDKR not doing as good, yea it is not even close to first two but again it is an easy 8,at least for me.

Did we ever have that much in common in terms of film taste?
I've hated Iron Man since the day I stupidly blind bought the DVD. I thought to myself "Hey, I really liked The Dark Knight and I like Robert Downey, Jr and Jeff Bridges, so this could be good." Yeah, no. It wasn't.
Similar thing happened with The Dark Knight Rises. It's also collecting dust on my shelf after my first - and probably last - viewing of it.

Trust me -- if I had known you could nominate that, it would have made the list, because I would have nominated it high.
That's what I hate about this countdown -- I didn't know what all you could even nominate! I had no idea Bullet to the Head was based on a comic book.

Naturally The Avengers was my number 1. The Dark Knight was my number two, so I am glad it won (not shocking at all too). Did not think Sin City or Batman Begins would be so high, but then again I voted for both so who cares. Thanks for the list Rodent! Nicely done!

19 The Amazing Spider Man (#37)
Curious for anyone who voted this movie > the first two Raimi Spider-Mans - What's better about it?
The Rodent
04-29-14, 04:33 PM
Better writing, better acting, better action, better effects. Basically everything.
Amazing Spidey is an origins story, it has a flashback to Parker's childhood and sets up a history.
Raimi had Parker as a school kid, then a teenager, then he was working at the Bugle... then he was fully grown up... all within the first film.
The Avengers only making it to #4? Bulls*it!!! :frustrated:
Anyway of the top 4 I had three on my list, the only one that missed out (which I'm sure will shock many people) was actually The Dark Knight. Just don't have any love for it. Although I knew it was going to come top. On sites/forums dedicated to comic books and superheroes it tends to be 50/50 between TDK and Avengers, but on this 'movie' forum was always going to be TDK. Particularly given how many Nolan cultists we have. :D
Here was my 25 -
1. The Avengers
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
3. Iron Man
4. Spider-Man 2
5. Batman Begins
6. The Crow
7. X-Men 2
8. Iron Man 3
9. X-Men: First Class
10. Thor

13. Hellboy II
14. Batman Returns
15. V for Vendetta
16. Batman : Mask of the Phantasm

19. Spider-Man
20. X-Men
21. Captain America
22. Sin City
23. Dredd
24. Superman
25. Iron Man 2
As I said several times I decided to stick purely to superheroes (with the odd judgment call), otherwise the likes of Oldboy would have come into contention. And had they been eligible both Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier would have made my list. Thor around 17/18 and Winter Soldier perhaps as high as top 5 depending how it holds up on rewatch.

Forgot to mention that I've seen Blue is the Warmest Color recently and it would have definitely made my list had I seen it on time.
I also recently saw a movie based on a comic book called 17 and Life Jailbait. Never read the comic, but the movie was an offensive craptastic turd.
Haha, I saw part of 17 and Life Jailbait, it was horrible. I turned it off in like ten minutes. Glad you liked Blue Is the Warmest Color! The original title better translates, The Life of Adele - Part 1 and 2.

Man of Steel is more tolerable than TDKR for me, but only because Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe are hot and Christian Bale... isn't. Tom Hardy can be attractive, but not as Bane.
So the greatest movie ever for you would be anything with loads of male models in right?
That's Sexy; at least if they're certain types of models. :)

No, this really pisses me off. I don't agree that we need to cut it down to a smaller number just because of certain movies that made the list. How do I know if the list wouldn't stay at 100 if Batman and Robin didn't happen to make it? And I bet if more "respectable" movies had been all throughout all 100, even if they only got one vote, I bet all 100 films would have made the official list.

It's about the math, as we said from the beginning. Having 80% of all the movies voted for, many of the bottom of the list only having had one person vote for them, is not the same standard as the other lists. Has nothing to do with which films they were.

We might as well include all 100 movies. This was our list. So what if several of the films only had one voter? When is the next time we're gonna have a Top Comic Book & Graphic Novel List? Long time from now. Maybe never. So what if one person voted? It represents us. It represents people who took the time to vote. The only reason -- THE REAL REASON -- the bottom 50 isn't being included is because of shame, embarrassment, and snobbery. Guarantee you this wouldn't be happening if the bottom 50 included only movies the snobs all liked, even if they only received one vote. These people just don't want something like Batman and Robin on the list. I am against this reason.

In hindsight as well, the Top 50 was much better received and I did agree after I'd started that I should have ekpt it shorter when people started complaining about how much of the bottom end isn't really a Populous Vote... so, a few hours ago Yods and I finally came to the agreement on using the Top 50 for the Lists Section.

But some of us liked the Bottom 50.
If you're going to cut it apart, then I'd like to see the Bottom 50 on a list, too. "The Bottom 50 MoFo Comic Book & Graphic Novel Movies List."
As far as I know, and Rodent and Yoda can correct me, nobody ever said publicly this list was going in the canon in any form (at least until now). I know it has the MoFo brand name attached, but is every such list going in? We have an ever-increasing number. :)
The Rodent
05-01-14, 12:43 AM
The Top 50 was better received because it was Popular Vote.
The bottom 50 were made up of 1 and 2 vote films.
Votes weren't a waste of time though, Deads, if I'd have held it as a 50, which is what the popular vote has shown itself as, your choices that came in within 100-51 wouldn't have shown anyway.
I agree on the choice of using 50... it keeps it neat and tidy and is more of a MoFo List...
I think including all 100 in the List Section, we may as well have all 155 as there wasn't a lot of difference between 51-155.
This whole thing stems back to me holding the actual Countdown as a 100 rather than a 50.
I just don't get the reason we're cutting it in half. There are good and bad movies on both halves.

And I feel discriminated against, too, in a way, since I'm sure that bottom 50 is strongly being ignored thanks to many of my films, such as Batman and Robin, appearing on it.

Okay, time to clear a few things up.
First: where are people getting the idea that this has anything to do with taste? The original plan was 50, and Rodent and I talked about it some more long before we'd revealed the bottom 50. Taste has zero to do with it.
Second: it has to do with math. The pool of films for this list is dramatically smaller than it is for decade lists. Even less than half, in fact, so if anything 50 is a little on the high side. Take a look at the AFI Musicals list: it's 25 films. Why? Because there are fewer musicals. And there are fewer comic book films, too. So either a) the list becomes dramatically less exclusive and just becomes a list of almost everything anyone thought to list or b) it's correspondingly smaller. Seems like a pretty obvious choice to me.
Third: the list was not "cut in half"--the plan while all of you were voting was to have 50 (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=33164), so the idea that anyone put in any "work" that was then "discarded" just doesn't make sense.
And fourth: I don't know why people would be satisfied if one movie got on because they gave it one 8th place vote, anyway. I dunno about you guys, but I don't get excited just because I see films I like on here...I get excited because if they're on here it means other people recognized them, too. Otherwise it's kind of an empty thrill to have them represented. Rodent said the exact same thing (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=33164) in the announcement thread.
50 seems like more than enough to me. When I was searching for movies for my list I was actually expecting to find more than I did. There really aren't that many.

I am a raging fan of comic book flicks. But a list of 50 makes sense. Even though that means Heavy Metal (a film I purposely put very high on my list so it would make it) gets cut, I understand Yoda's reasoning.
Besides, if the issue was about film snobby tastes, I don't think the whole comic book movie list would have been allowed let alone made an official list on the site. ;)
I concede! I forgot about the Musicals list. I always liked it because seeing one more counted as 4%. With this list it'll be 2%, so it's going to seem like I've seen a lot more comic books movies than I have. :D

Well I still don't quite buy it. But I never expected anything to change. It figures our best list would get halved on some technicality BS. We may as well not have bothered.
At least Ghost In The Shell and Ninja Turtles made it.
It's not really a "technicality" issue, it's the principle of the way the lists are done in general. If it's done for Musicals and other lists, why shouldn't it be done for Graphic Novels and Comic Books?
The thread said it would be 50 when everyone voted. So if anyone thinks a list of 50 isn't worth bothering with, why did they vote?
Deadite
05-01-14, 10:43 AM
I'd need a comparison between the amount of participants vs. size of list and genre pool to draw from. If fewer mofos took part in this list than lists with huge pools of films to draw from, then yes, the result is naturally more films making the list with fewer voters. But that's okay because we're not trying to represent the mofos who didn't participate. Cutting the list then only makes it less representative because there was a small number of participants to begin with, who were voting on a GENRE, not a decade.

I thought we had changed it to 100. Cuz liike, there are 100.
But you didn't think that when you voted. Everyone voted for a Top 50; says so right there in the thread. Absolutely nobody objected to this.
The only thing that's changed is that now people got to see the next 50. Which apparently creates some new expectation, beyond what everyone actually signed up for.

… but the influx of votes over the past few months, and especially the week leading up to the deadline, has been awesome stuff, guys… and together we’ve got ourselves a Top 100 going on…
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q552/The-Rodent/MoFo%20Comic%20And%20Graphic%20Headers/OfficialComicsHeader_zpsfde53698.png
Is it supposed to be a reflection of MoFo votes, or of actual movie pool size?
As far as I know, I voted in a 100 list.
It said 50 the whole time. It was up for six months. How could you have possibly concluded you were voting for a top 100 when you voted?
I really don't care how much math hoodoo you throw out until you answer my post above about comparing # of voters and list and genre pool sizes. Then I might feel a bit less shafted, bro.
I certainly don't want anyone to feel shafted, but if someone feels shafted for getting exactly what they were told they would get, I'm not sure a lot can be done.
As for your questions--are you questioning the idea that there are fewer comic book films than there are films in a given decade? Because I would think that would be obvious.
And, going from memory, I think we got about three-fourths as many for this one as we have for recent decade lists.
Fewer submissions + smaller pool to draw from = smaller list. This math seems pretty far from hoodoo, to my mind at least.
Hmm... but Yoda you say, it's right there in the first post that it's a top 50 list... except:
I was referring to the thread that solicited the votes--IE: what people were actually told they were getting when they decided to participate. Nobody objected until they got to see the next 50.
Is it supposed to be a reflection of MoFo votes, or of actual movie pool size?
It's a whole mix of things, really. It needs to be representative and meaningful. Obviously if one person participated, that list would be reflective, but largely pointless. And obviously if we were listing the Best Murder Mysteries Starring Morgan Freeman of All-Time, we wouldn't want more than a few even if every single member voted.
So, there's a lot to consider. But a good rule of thumb, I think, is that it should definitely take more than one person to get any film on one of these lists. Otherwise there's nothing really special about seeing your film on the list, anyway.

Well then I think that pretty much settles it. If we're rewarded with a bonus by getting to see a longer list, and that makes our expectations change, and we impose on that... then all that's going to happen in the future is we won't get that added bonus any more.
Deadite, If you agreed to participate in a top 50 list in the beginning, then why are you insisting it should be a top 100 just because you were given the bonus of seeing the other 50 results? Was it just that Rodent didn't make it clear in this thread that the end result was going to be only 50?

All I know is I took the time to make out a proper list using Rodent's helpful wiki links as reference. That was A LOT of movies to go through to refresh my memory and make sure I didn't overlook anything I thought worthy. I didn't just grab 25 off the top of my head. I redid my list until I got it right by my standards.
I also am unsure when Rodent decided to go full 100 list but it doesn't matter. He did. And that's what I've been judging the list by: it's full 100. And that list rocks. It's diverse. It represents ALL the people who voted.
The new chopped list doesn't. And just taken on its movie merit, that new list is ***** compared to the old one. It has a few greats, a lot of decents, and some crap too.
All I've seen in response to my complaints and other's complaints is a lot of handwaving and harrumphing. Sorry to say.
So I'm surprisedly gonna say that I must echo Sexy's sentiment: Y'all can keep your respectable list and keep where it don't shine, and it will probably be a long time before I participate in anything like this again.
I understand that you'd rather have a top 100 list. That's understandable. But what is the real issue here? Why does Rodent posting a top 100 list mean the list that goes up SHOULD be a top 100 list instead of the top 50 list that was agreed upon before? Would you have done less work, or not bothered to participate if Rodent was only going to post the top 50?
Sorry you feel that way, but I think the handwaving is all on the other side. You did indeed make a proper list--and you submitted it to a thread that clearly said "Top 50." And it said that for half a year. So literally nothing about your decision to submit a list contained even the slightest whiff of anything misleading or unfair.
And if there's been a good argument against the considerations of genre pool size and user submission total, I haven't seen it. Both point to a smaller list. If someone else thinks other considerations are more important, that's certainly debatable. But agree or not, these are clearly normal, rational reasons for favoring a smaller list.
All I'm really hearing on the other side is that people want more of their movies to show up. But when is that not true? What's supposed to be special about a movie that showed up because only you chose it? The whole point of making a site list is that it represents multiple people. That's what differentiates it from "Yoda's Favorite Comic Book Films," or what have you. When a single vote can put a film on the list, the whole point of having the list goes out the window.

I already said why. I'm done with this topic and I wish I could take back my votes too.
I think Rodent could have made a disclaimer in the first post of this thread that even though he was giving a top 100 list only 50 would be going up on the site.
But I still think you're overreacting Deadite.
Here's the list, for anyone who'd like to fill it out. :)

After all of that work (watching movies? ICK!), Deadite only has every single film he voted for acknowledged somewhere in this thread, in plain view there for discussion and suggestions, in a thread that ain't going anywhere and will be referenced on this site for as long as the site is around (which so far is well over a decade, now).
But does he get to check off a little box? Nooooooooooooooo.
Totally get why he's upset and digging his heels in. :indifferent:
A bit of a simplification of the issue Holden, but yeah the site list gimmick is no big deal. Getting to see the top 100 proceed in this thread and being a part of it is its own reward.
I don't like to invalidate someone's opinions when they're genuinely upset.

I think that looking at the films from 50-100 there was not much reason to expand in the first place, if we expanding the 70s (or 80s, or 90s) lists to try and display and represent everyone's votes and tastes, we'd have 300+ films. I have heard of all 50 films on this list, and I think it is a solid representation of films that makes sense, where as the 50-100 are films that sometimes only one person has voted for and don't really hold much weight.
Holden Pike

Don't try being reasonable and using logic, Daniel. That has been tried, ad nauseum. We're down to name calling, now. I posted this a month ago, to no avail...
But to me this is like the NHL playoffs now. Practically EVERYbody got in, so who cares what films are on the list, until you get to the top of it? You should lose two-thirds of the list. Skepsis had 371 different titles submitted for the 1980s list. That means only 27% of the movies made it to the spotlight, which made both the countdown dramatic and also an accomplishment to make the cut. You are having closer to 65% of the comic book titles make it...so who cares? If you made your list the top fifty, that's about 33%, and much more in line with the percentage/prestige of the big decade lists. If you only named the top twenty-five, then it's only about 16% that are making the cut, and that's truly elite!
Put it this way, just go by the numbers: if Skepsis' 1980s list used the same percentage of entries you are using, it would have been The Top 241 Movies of the 1980s. And then who gives a fart? That's just silly.
I respect the enthusiasm, but I fear you've diluted the product.

Nah, I'm not calling anyone names for disagreeing with me, certainly not Dan or Zot. I called it like it is where YOU are concerned, bub. So take your strawman and stuff it.
You could try understanding it from Deadite's perspective and not make him feel worse than he already does.
He sees the fun tool loosing some of its value, and that's legitimate. The list would be more interesting to him with more movies on it. It doesn't matter what was agreed upon. Just because it was agreed upon doesn't make it necessarily better. You have to validate other people's opinions. Don't just try and win the argument. I don't care what the end result of the list is. To me it's just a meaningless gimmick. But I would like to see Deadite participate in further lists because I enjoyed his contributions to this one. You could have just put your foot down and kept it a 50 list without hurting his feelings so much that he doesn't want to participate in any more.
Holden Pike
05-01-14, 02:44 PM
Wait...isn't that exactly what you do with a strawman? Stuff it? On it!
And I'm not the one who put my foot down. Also I tried to be nice until people started sticking fingers in their ears and throwing tantrums. When it reaches that point, fair game. Act like a child, get treated like one.

Because I know -- okay? I know -- I've looked at an alternate timeline. I have used both my psychic powers and even Doc and I traveled there in the DeLorean -- I even astral projected there. I saw an alternate Top Comic Book & Graphic Novel Movies Countdown. Batman & Robin wasn't on it, but it included all sorts of other, more beloved movies. All the way from 100 to 1. Every movie was Wintertriangles approved. Many of them only had one voter.
And in that alternate timeline, Yoda added the list to the lists section and all 100 movies were added.
This is happening because of certain movies that were in the Bottom 50. You have just used an elaborate excuse to try to justify what you've done here. You dropped off those movies because of certain movies that were included. I know. I went to another dimension and I know.
