Eternal Sunshine. Awesome. I absolutely LOVE this movie and I really didn't expect to like it at all. Sad to see it's fallen a few places from its spot on the previous list, though.

Huge, huge mistake.

Frankly, don't bother watching the film. It kind of seems like you are already down on the film a bit, searching for a fast way out when you watch it. I mean, why bother if you have already decided you won't like it before you see the first frame?

Frankly, I haven't decided anything about the movie except that I plan to watch it. As a general rule, I watch theatrical cuts first regardless of whether or not I expect to enjoy the movie. If I like the movie and wish to see more, I'll watch the director's cut later.

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have seen it so many times.

Miss V, usually I would agree with you and always go with (recommend) the original theatrical release as a first viewing for any film, but this rule is voided when it comes to Blade Runner. I cannot stress enough that you really need to trust Sedai and I when we tell you to watch the director's cut instead.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is all that? Perhaps not, I see it has dropped 10 spots since last time...

The Prestige

No Thurs, you're not. It's alright and very creative. But it's a bit too kooky for me. Had there been a dark edge to it I would have found it a lot more attractive. Love Blade Runner though. Terrific film, gets better everytime I see.

Yoda
10-06-10, 09:54 AM
To me, the "dark edge" is (obviously spoilers abound) that people keep falling into these destructive relationships even after trying to erase them from their memory. It's not a particularly happy love story; it's more about how we go on loving people even when it's clearly a terrible idea. There's an old quote that "second love is the triumph of hope over experience," that pretty much embodies Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

This might not be the same thing as dark; more like depressing. But they're kind of similar, to me. I think it's a wry observation on how impossible it is to keep people apart when they want to be together: you can even give them irrefutable proof that they're not going to be compatible, and they just can't help themselves.

Powdered Water
10-06-10, 09:54 AM
No, you're not the only one Thursday. I think I've nitpicked enough of the flicks in here though for a while, so, I'll leave this time waster to the professionals.

I mean, what's to say really, about a movie that makes no sense, has no point and goes no where?

Oh, Kate had pretty hair.

Powdered Water
10-06-10, 09:57 AM
I just went back and read that. That seems harsh. Maybe I watched the wrong movie?

people keep falling into these destructive relationships even after trying to erase them from their memory.

those less cynical would probably say "soul mates".

i remember that the ending of Eternal Sunshine left me feeling terribly empty. i think the very sweetest parts of the film were all the memories, even the ones that weren't necessarily sentimental. the end just made me deflate.

genesis_pig
10-06-10, 02:52 PM
I sometimes wish erasing people from your memory could be somehow possible.
I have someone I'd like to erase, even though it would affect my life a lot.

Anyway, the best thing about Kaufman's scripts is that they are based on universal themes yet somehow surreal.

Brodinski
10-06-10, 03:07 PM
I like Eternal Sunshine, but I think Adaptation has the better performances (Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper) and the better script.

genesis_pig
10-06-10, 03:12 PM
For me, BJM & Synecnoche, NY has the best Script & performances.

Eternal Sunshine is just more accessible & something I could relate to.

Xanatos
10-06-10, 05:00 PM
Yeah, I think a major part of ESotSM was if you could relate to it or not. I could, so I really liked it. Someone mentioned early about Blade Runner; given my interests I thought I'd really like it but I didn't really get what was so great about it. It was cool and all, but nothing spectacular.

You know what, those two paragraphs really made me look at the film from a different perspective, honestly. I think your analysis of the film's themes was more interesting than the film itself! :D But really, I might actually give it another go after that. Hopefully I can get something better out of it this time. If not, then I will alway feel that the concept of ESOTSM is a lot mroe appealing than the film itself.

Is the thought of someone you love erasing you not dark enough

I suppose if I was to put myself in those shoes then yes, it is dark. But I was mainly referring to the tone of the film. The feel of it. Thematic, it's not lovely dovey, but I could have done with an even more cynical edge if it were possible. I dunno, maybe i'm just a sad depressed big bastard.

I too thought this would be a bit higher. So what's left? The first films that come to mind are Goodfellas, The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2, Pulp Fiction, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, The Shawshank Redemption and The Matrix.

But I've only got 13 and there's 16 left to go. And I'm not even sure if The Wizard of Oz hasn't appeared yet or if it even will. I figure Goodfellas, The Godfather 1 & 2, Pulp Fiction, 2001, Star Wars and Apocalypse Now are locks for the top 10.

One thing's for sure, there's going to be a few surprises ranked way high. That, or I'm just missing a few obvious choices. Like... Charlie's Angels.

Enter Yoda: I understand why it's on here but it's too high anyway.

Kubrick makes films that I don't love, but I can see why others do. That's probably the best way I can explain it. I don't feel the long, laborious scenes add to the mood or the pacing; I think they just put absurd amounts of space inbetween the brilliant parts (of which there are certainly several). I find I feel this way about most of his films.

I think we're safe on both. I don't think we'll have more than one "wow, really, it's that high?" moment from here on out (and I think that'll come whenever The Matrix shows up). But we'll see.

I too thought this would be a bit higher. So what's left? I've lost track of what's on the list in total, but Fight Club is one that'll almost certainly be on there. I don't think we've seen The Big Lebowski, either, so that gets us awfully close. I don't think we've had City Lights or The General, either.

Here's hoping Badger posts the last two or three in fairly quick succession, because by #2 we'll definitely know what #1 is.

He's not a member though. I don't think it's the best, but I've watched it many, many times and am never bored. Hey Meaty, did you ever come around on this flick, or do you still hate it?

A few years ago Bravo i think it was had an all day Marathon of Clint Eastwood Westerns on a holiday or somethen.

Anyways, besides impulsing me in going out and getting 90 % of them on DVD (hate commercials when watching a movie..specially on bravo. its like they have a handful of Ads to run each day..so its same one over and over)

but also an brand new appreciation for Unforgiven. The progression of eastwoods take on more or less the same archetype is amazing.

Outlaw Josey Wales stands up really well also i must add.

really looking forward to the remaining dozen.

I always wished Eastwood would do another western, if not star in one atleast direct one.
But all I can say for sure is that Unforgiven was the best film for him to retire from westerns.

Technically I've seen this one. But I was like 12 years old and found it boring at the time. Haven't watched it since.

I watched it when I was a kid too, didn't like it much but didn't hate it either.

But after watching it recently, I enjoyed it a lot more.
But I am still having difficulty buying the end shootout scene.. It seems a bit silly that one man against all those guys & he still manages to take over everyone... Especially when earlier in the film he had difficulty with his shooting.

Maybe I am looking at the wrong way... But I still love the film & the ending is very delightful.

I just want to say real quick that I'm surprised at all the surprise. I always considered Part II to be the masterpiece. It has everything in the first one AND an origin story. I dunno... I'll have to list my reasons later. I can see why people would consider the first one as a singular work of art with its structure and all, but for me it just sets up the impact of the sequel.

I don't see how anybody can think that Part II is equal to or better than The Godfather after only one viewing. They both need multiple viewings to play off each other, but the original doesn't really need Part II to be damn fine by itself.

It's a great film. Would I have ranked it higher than most films in this top 20? I don't think so, but I can certainly understand why people like it so much. I love a nice feel-good story as well. It's got great performances and it's expertly constructed plotwise. It catches some flack for being too mellow and clichéd, but I for one wasn't bothered by this at all.

And that shot where you see that Morgan Freeman's character carved "So was Red" always brings a smile to my face.

Yoda
10-14-10, 05:24 PM
Likewise. Beautifully scored. I actually don't love Robbins' performance, but everyone else's is sublime.

Excellent spot for an excellent film. It's more or less in the same spot I put it in my top 10. The effects are still wonderful, even after a decade and Reeves performance is just pretty much perfect given the type of character that Thomas Anderson/Neo is. I think it's an easy film to take for granted these days, but watched this Mofo about 3 times in the cinema and it was always packed and cheered for. Highly influential, thought provoking and entertaining. So happy it got this far.

I will also be surprised if The Departed makes it into the top 10. Good film but that seems a bit f'd up to me that it can even make it that far.

I'm new, so I had no input on this list, but going through it has been fun. A good mixture of movies I would have picked, movies that made me say "Are you serious?," and movies I haven't seen but probably should. Happy to see Superman, Temple of Doom, Ghostbusters, Empire Strikes Back, The (Complete) Lord of the Rings and It's a Wonderful Life on here.

The Matrix is one of those movies I know everyone loves, but I just can't get into it. Even with it's groundbreaking effects it wouldn't have been near my list.

The Matrix is such a great flick. Already 11 years later and we're still talking about it. What a buzz I had the first night I went to see it.

I think it deserves to be on here. Probably ten spaces lower though. At most.

Powdered Water
10-18-10, 09:12 PM
I think it should be 7 spaces higher.

planet news
10-18-10, 09:52 PM
Let the maths resolve this.

(-10 + 7)/2 < a; where a is a cardinal integer

Solving for a, we get a > -1.5 > -1.

In conclusion, the film "should be" at most 1 space lower.

The Matrix is a good film... but I feel it's too high.

It's sad that High Noon hasn't even appeared on this list.

http://www.labjor.unicamp.br/biotecnologias/calcadao/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/high-noon-2.jpg

High Noon is obviously a classic, although nowadays people seem to find it underwhelming. I'm not sure why, since it's one of the better, faster 85 minute-movies ever made. There are many westerns not on the list. None of the westerns in my personal MoFo mafo Top 100 are on the list, and that includes One-Eyed Jacks, Red River, The Professionals, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Little Big Man.

planet news
10-18-10, 10:19 PM
From having not seen the first three on your list or Little Big Man or High Noon or The Wild Bunch or (fill in the blank essential western), it's clear I'm not too versed in the genre... -_-

But McCabe was something I really liked, though I'm reading now on Wikipedia that it was meant to subvert the Western genre. Not even sure what that means at this point. Most of the great westerns have been said to subvert or redefine the genre in one way or another.

Powdered Water
10-18-10, 10:22 PM
I don't know what that means either. It was quite good though, I reckon.

mark f
10-18-10, 10:38 PM
You mean most "post-modern" or "revisionist" westerns? That implies that before a genre is subverted it's somehow not true to itself. I'd definitely call that revisionist, but I realize that revisionism/subversion is your bread and your butter.

Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah. That's just what Wikipedia said! Like I said, I didn't get the feeling that anything was "out of the ordinary". I mean, there's something distinctive about Altman's camera work, but that would be it.

Altman just makes really effing good films is what it is.

mark f
10-18-10, 10:59 PM
Altman goes way beyond his camerawork. He often has "important" dialogue in the background and/or offscreen. He also seems to have thought about introducing certain ideas into American Cinema, in a similar way to Peckinpah. He also goes out of his way to edit certain connecting scenes either out of the film or he puts them in some weird place to make them a flash-forward or a flashback. I'm not saying that Altman isn't meticulous or that he just BSs his way through his films, but I'm saying that Altman follows his own muse, and he seems to have a whole lotta muses.

I like it, but it wont be on my Top 100, Life & Times of Judge Roy Bean surely will.

It would have made by Top 25, but sadly I saw the movie much after making my Top 100.

Haven't seen One Eyed Jacks & Red River.
But I hope to catch up with a lot of westerns before this year ends.

Professionals was my favourite as a kid & it still is.. Damnit it should have been on my list.
The worst thing is when I made my list, I borrowed most movies from other People's list... never went around giving it a thought. (I made my list in 30 minutes).

I have started keeping track of my movies now... I just need to put them in an order.

& were you the only one who had High Noon on his list?
I thought most people here would like High Noon, as it's labelled as a western meant for non-western lovers...

A much better film with the same theme is They LiveThere, I fixed it for you.Sure, but the themes are very different.

Though both films deal with a "hidden world", They Live does not make a distinction between reality and the "hidden world". The "hidden world" is embedded into reality itself. The Matrix throws out reality altogether, claiming that there is no reality in itself to be fought for but rather an escape from it. In other words, They Live merely wants to "uncover" certain aspects of reality where The Matrix rejects reality completely.

The Truman Show also rejects reality completely. The idea of emancipation from the Imaginary realm is the subject of both films.

Why it was necessary for The Matrix to incorporate pho-kung fu action on top of this theme, I will never understand.

Not to say that those fight sequences were not omgwtfawesome, but then The Matrix Reloaded clearly outdoes its predecessor in those terms.
