I don't remember asking you a ******* thing!
I say my favorite game of 2012 has to be Far Cry 3. It just works so well. The great shooter mechanics, the open-world exploration and progression of an RPG, the well-written and satisfying storyline, the amazing voice acting from the entire cast, and the surprisingly awesome multiplayer all make this game my top pick of the year. Honorable mentions go to Assassin's Creed III, Borderlands 2, Halo 4, and Journey (my personal #2 pick).

The People's Republic of Clogher
Yeah, I didn't get off to a good start with the stones with my first Orc character cause I didn't find out they exist for quite a while, so I was a bit annoyed when I read about them and realized I had walked right past them early on.
Heh, I did exactly the same thing on the first playthrough - Went straight to Riverwood as the crow flies and missed the Guardian Stones completely.

Gandalf - It's not my favourite of all time (that'd be Elite) but Oblivion is probably my favourite game this current gen. It's the one I've put most hours into anyway.

I'd forgotten about Journey, a truly special game and experience. I'd have it in the same vein as Dear Esther on PC.

I find Skyrim is flexible enough to be what I make of it, so the gold fixation and tanking drudgery is only a problem if you forget to mix it up and stop to smell the roses, so to speak. Grinding for loot and levels is extremely dull, imo. I treat it as a choose-your-own-adventure and appreciate the exploration and unexpected little moments, good or bad.
Yeah, this. Everything that bugs me about Skyrim is sort of stuff that bugs me about me.

Anyway, Fallout 3, whew. I practically lived in that game.
Same here. I'd be almost embarrassed to post specifics of the amount of time I was sinking into that at one point. I think your first huge sandbox game is a lot like your first RPG; it's kind of mind-blowing when you find it. The fact that Fallout 3 just happens to be a great sandbox game by any standard just adds to it. Granted, I played GTA IV first, but that doesn't have anywhere near the same sense of discovery.

We've gone on holiday by mistake
Yoda what were your games of 2012? Skyrim? What have you spent most time playing?

We've gone on holiday by mistake
I really wasn't very impressed by anything last year. Even the games I most enjoyed that I've played had notable downsides. Like I said, Walkibg Dead was great for me as a story, very powerful and moving especially in the last chapter, but the actual gameplay was meh.

Mass Effect 3 was fun but I didn't enjoy as much as ME2. ME2 was balanced just about perfect for me. Where ME was a clunky RPG with an awkward shooter mechanic and ME3 was too much of a shooter. ME2 was a nearly perfect hybrid.

XCOM is probably my pick for #2 but I need to put more time into it to be sure.
I'm still on the fence about getting XCOM, will probably get it when its like £5-10 on Steam sale.

I actually completed a playthrough of the original XCOM UFO Defence this year and really enjoyed it despite it getting a bit grindy towards the end.

Just love the moment when you send one of your favourite Officers(that you have named after family/friends) steps off the ship into the unknown and a plasma rifle bolt whizzes right past their head.

Is it true to te original XCOM? I dont like the fact that you can only have 6 team members.

The Indie Horror PC Games. You guys need to play Amnesia & Slender.

I played Slender. Have it on my laptop. Gotta admit, it gave me some damn good scares on my first playthrough. I'd recommend it as a good horror game.

The People's Republic of Clogher
Never tried Slender (it's freeware) but Amnesia is brilliant, and 75% off on Steam for the next few hours - Last day of the Winter sale.

If you want to see what the atmosphere is like check out gopher's let's play on YouTube, but only the first episode or two because of (obviously ) spoilers.

It's basically a remake, so yes I'd say it's true to the original.

From what I hear, the remake is faster paced than the original, though I hear it's just as difficult as ever. One of the differences is that the remake doesn't have the base defense missions of the original, in keeping with the faster, more hectic pace of the new. Doesn't seem like that big an issue to me though.

28 days...6 hours...42 minutes...12 seconds
Never got into Skyrim, never got into Fallout. I guess I'm not that much of an RPG type player.

As for the tops, here's a quick rundown of what I liked.

Journey
Dishonored
Spec Ops: The Lines (big surprise)
Fez

I guess I liked last years list better as I hold both Arkham City and Portal 2 very high.

BF3 Aftermath

Been hooked back into this by the latest DLC. (That counts as a 2012 release right? )

The new maps aren't ground breaking (beyond all the broken ground . And the occasional target-breaking tremor), but its fun getting to know the nooks and crannies. Plus finding out for the first time whether you really can fly the heli through a hole in a giant tower (while your mate says "you're not..." )

The assignments & new crossbow add-ons bring that fresh flood of rewards, but not really sold on the Xbow as a tool as yet. Seems to let you be a jack-of-all trades no matter what your loadout, although less effective than any specialist. The spotter bolt is very short lived for example, and the TNT one seems pretty useless against properly armoured vehicles. (Disabling a heli with a nicely judged lob is very satisfying tho ). Plus the reload time is pretty huge. Seems to make sense for lone wolves, altho that's a bit weird given the emphasis on teamplay. (The assignments that encourage you to use all the diff loadouts are welcome tho, as I often neglect aspects of the game that are still fun for preferred play-styles).

I've looked at some of the direct download to pc games available, particular the classic arcade MK2, some are horribly reviewed.

I'm very interested in wilderness games, I remember seeing one advertisement in a electronics store. I've always wanted and dreamed off living in an Alpine setting.

My hand has improved enough that I can use a game controller again so I sparked up Dark Souls for the first time in ages. Started a new game because I'm so out of practice.

Woof!

DSfix really does bring the best out of the graphics:

This year could be very interesting in terms of non Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo consoles what with the Steambox and Nvidia's Project Shield.

PC snobs are already pooh-poohing Steambox because it uses Linux and there are only 40-odd Linux compatible games on Steam, most of them Indies. I doubt if Valve will go into anything half-arsed though so expect to see some kind of DirectX wrapper to enable the more complex games to run.

The Nvidia thing looks a bit strange in that you can use it to stream games from your PC.

i'm SUPER GOOD at Jewel karaoke
my friend is letting me borrow her xbox while she gets her life sorted out, so i've been playing games a lot more lately, these ones actually-

the ending made me tear up a bit.

i still don't really 'get' it but it hasn't deterred me from progressing.

i don't give 2 ***** about the show, but this is actually a ridiculously fun game.

Heh. What I mean is: do you not get the message of the game? Do you not actually understand the mechanics, even though you're somehow understanding them enough to move through the game? IE: you're solving puzzles, but not in an "aha" way, but through trial and error until it works, and you're not always sure why it did?
