"Getting To Know You" Song Tournament

What's the Deal was my song. I think Captain Spaulding (who is incredibly good at this game) guessed it. 28 Days are an Australian rap/punk/metal band who were very popular a while back. That song pretty much sums up Australia in summer. Beer and the beach I actually nominated it because I recently spent three weeks in New York and when I got back home I was reminded of something a friend said to me about 25 years ago - regardless of how much you travel or see the world you are always blown away when you fly back into Sydney and see the beaches and the harbour. Our culture is very connected to the sea and summer (and beer) and as I said, no other song deals with that part of our culture better:

The beer is ice cold
And it's sold
From a supermarket that keeps their prices down
This day is not pretentious or fake
Home town Sunday shining
And it takes a day like this to make me understand
That you can't beat the sweet feeling of sand
Between your toes, this is how it goes
Down with a beer in my hand
My best friend's to the left
She's closest to the esky
She passes me a Coopers
And she glistens in the sun

Round 1 - Day 7:

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine vs. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem
not sure this could be a more clashing matchup... a religious hymn vs an Ebay parody to the tune of Backstreet Boys

Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change

Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane (Alternate Link for U.S.)

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star vs. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow

Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good vs. Joe Montgomery - Bowling Song

Time to tell, the Theme to Z Cars was mine. Chyp got it by thinking it was a favourite tv series back then, which it was being one of the first more gritty police series. It had a great cast too - Brian Blessed, Frank Windsor, James Ellis, Colin Welland and Stratford Johns as well as hundreds of British character actors over the years it was broadcast.
However the reason it's close to my heart and speaks about me is that my beloved Everton F.C. have run out onto the pitch at Goodison Park to the Z Cars theme for around 50 years. HK knew that of course. Just hearing it gives me goosepimples. To explain to non Brits, my home town of Liverpool has two football teams - Everton and Everton Reserves...sorry, it's an old joke - actually there's two Premier League football teams in Liverpool: Everton (who play in blue) and Liverpool (red). When you're born, you're born into a Blue family or a Red one. You can't really change as you'll always be a kind of family outcast, a committer of treason. When you meet a new person it's pretty much one of the first things you'll find out about them, it's that deep rooted.
When I was younger and living at home, my dad used to go to the match with his mates, my brother, the middle kid, would go with his mates and I used to take my younger brother cos I had to take him to the part of the ground that wouldn't be so crowded - this was in the days of standing up at the match. he would've only been 7 or so when we started going on our own. We had to get a place by the crash barriers for him to sit on so he could see. I look back on those days with great fondness.
Back then in the city we had a football newspaper called the Football Echo. We'd get back home from the match and an hour or so later the Footy Echo would get to the shops. We'd run over and get it and when my dad came back from having the obligatory pint, me and my brothers would argue about the match and what went on that afternoon.
It's specially poignant for me when I look back on those days as my middle brother died very young, and my dad's no longer here either, and thinking about those times makes me smile. Me and my younger brother still keep the faith though, and both of my sons are Evertonians. His little daughters are too. I went back recently and watched Everton v Liverpool with my own son and hearing Z Cars playing made my eyes well up.
Good times

Here's a wobbly video, but I thought it illustrated things from a fan's view

ROUND 1 - DAY 7:

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine vs. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better
Both good songs, and a song about wine, that's a winner

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem
Probably the weirdest match up we have had yet.

Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change

Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie
vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star vs. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow

Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good vs. Joe Montgomery - Bowling Song

'Fess up time for me again - getting doubtful that any of mine will make it to round 2 at this stage

Deutsch-Österreichisches Feingefühl - Codo

was mine.

When I was just out of my teens I was lucky enough to get sent by my company over to Germany to live and work as part of an international team building the Norwegian digital telephone exchange. It was quite an adventure for someone who had (a) never flown before and (b) only knew how to count from 1 to 100 and say basic pleasantries in the language and I wanted something to represent that wonderful phase in my life. Codo had actually been a big European hit the year before but was still a favourite in the clubs so I got to hear it plenty of times and grew to appreciate not only it but the German sense of humour and way of life in general.

I thought some people would probably label it as an HK selection from his love of Eurovision and I deliberately didn't give the full name of the band as I thought that might point to my OCD which I know I've mentioned in the past.
I bet you had a great time Chyp! Hope you're clubbing days aren't over yet

Time to fess up - this is my song. I can tell you guys didn't see this one coming. I'm not a huge Fleetwood Mac fan because some of their stuff work with me and others don't. but most of their early discography is legendary. They made all the popular rock and roll song arrangement tropes yet rarely credit for doing such creative music. "Oh Well" is the first song to have a feedback between a Capella and instrumental music (something I really like but unfortunately not used very often). "Black Dog", which came a few years later, works around the same formula but is way more well known because... Led Zeppelin.

And that's just Part 1 one of the song. While part 1 is just a fun classic rock and roll romp with a coolness level no machine can make a number out of. part 2 is the real beauty. It again backs up my case about Fleetwood Mac being under-appreciated and being labeled as a soft rock band that knew how to make hit songs. Fleetwood Mac is way more than that. Part 2's melody is instantly captivating and has elements of progressive rock and subtle blues while maintaining the band's unique style. Combine parts 1 and 2 and you have an instant masterpiece and 9 minutes that fly by fast (time does fly when you're having fun - in this case your ears are endlessly entertained).

Okay, so what does this song mean to me on a personal level? Well, the song's lyrics, if you pay close attention is what you would guess is about. The protagonist of the song lacks a lot of that would otherwise make a perfect human being, but he just shrugs it all off with a laid-back attitude. And that's exactly what I try to do. If you've seen pictures of me, I'm skinny, nerdy and don't have a specific talent. However I don't think this as a curse and rather try to enjoy with the things I do have. Girls don't like me? Oh well. I can't lift even the lightest dumbbells? Oh well, At least I have MoFo.
I didn't guess you for that one Gats, but thinking about it I see how you would appreciate the musicality of it

sounds idyllic Sane. I'm looking out the window now, it's only 5.40pm, it's dark and the wind is blowing a gale, I could do with an ice cold beer and some sunshine!

ROUND 1 - DAY 7:

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine vs. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better - whoever messed up the title of Merle's song is getting too OLD to remember even tho they've probably been listening to it for over 40 years. Brain cells and wine hey?

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem - Jerusalem - is that post ironic SFS? and the ebay one has to be GBG

Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change - it was always going to be SC for Boy George, and poss Sane for the Scorpions?

Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane (Alternate Link for U.S.)

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance - I'm voting for Men Withour Hats to be HKs. I think he loves Morris Men

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes - Mott has to be either HK or Chyp reliving their glamrock youth. I love that song too

Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star vs. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun - Bing is that yours Mistique?

Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow - obviously CR has Laverne and Lenny

Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good vs. Joe Montgomery - Bowling Song - is the Bowling Song SVs?

Trouble with a capitial 'T'
Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow
My guesses: Can CR really put three L&S songs up? Is there really that little he can think of to say about himself? I'll say no and this is Gbg getting in on the act.
Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow - obviously CR has Laverne and Lenny
I can shirley say that one of you are wrong
I say that because I get the impression he has absolutely no inbuilt sense of direction whatsoever and gets lost all the time...
That's funny! because that's mostly true. I never get lost in the woods, but put me in the mall and I don't remember where the door was....Though I don't think I've ever talked about my bad sense of direction? How did you guess?

Trouble with a capitial 'T'
Ha

The weirdest thing that happens with my sense of direction is on road trips. I can be driving down a long road, pull into a restaurant/shop....then when I come back out and drive out of the parking light onto the main road and have to take either a left or right, I always chose wrong...and so try to turn in the direction that I had just came from. Which would make for a short trip I don't know why that happens?

I'd give her a HA! and a HI-YA! Then I'd kick her.
I'm leaving ROUND 1 - DAY 7 open for the people who haven't voted yet, but here's DAY 8 for the people who are ready.

The people who haven't voted yet in DAY 7 are Gatsby, Captain Spaulding, Honeykid, The Sci-Fi Slob and Gbgoodies. (Yes, I'm guilty again this time too. ) And I'm starting to lose hope that Rauldc14 and Derek Vinyard will change their minds and decide to vote.

Also, DAY 5 and DAY 6 are still open for The Sci-Fi Slob, but if he hasn't voted in the next few hours, I'll close DAY 5.

ROUND 1 - DAY 8:

Hyperplush - Truly Blonde vs. Judas Priest - Painkiller

Guns N Roses - Estranged vs. Chuck Berry - Johnny B Goode

Bobby Bland - Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City vs. Waylon Jennings - Good 'Ol Boys

B-Real, Busta Rymes, Coolio, LL Cool J & Method Man - Hit 'Em High vs. Rush - Subdivisions

John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John - Summer Nights vs. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Going Through the Motions

Lloyd Banks - On Fire vs. Linkin Park - Somewhere I Belong

Linda Ronstadt - You're No Good vs. Cheap Trick - Hello There

Public Enemy - He Got Game (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. Metallica - Ride the Lightning

Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun vs. Jessie J - Price Tag

Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow
If that's not Citizen Rules' song, I think it may be Captain Spaulding's, because Captain gave me rep for my votes, which must mean I voted for one of his songs.... and only that one strikes me as a possible Captain Spaulding song. But I don't know for sure.

Although WAIT A MINUTE................................................

Wait Wait Wait Wait WAIT A MINUTE.

......................................................................................

........................................................................................

........................................................................................

What if Captain Spaulding nominated the Weird Al song?

Most of Captain's songs have been goofy, silly songs..........

And Captain has been described as looking like Weird Al Yankovic because of his long, curly hair.

.......................................................................................

I bet it was Captain.

Although I'm not sure why he chose a song about Ebay, but, I'm sure he'll have an explanation.

(Yes, I'm guilty again this time too. )
Don't worry, you're doing great I think the pace for this tournament is good, for my sake it could even be slower.

I'm sure Sexy disagres with me

No...... Weird Al song was probably GBG. Citizen Rules seemed so sure of it, and they're close friends.

Captain Spaulding is probably Stereophonics. I guess.

I'd give her a HA! and a HI-YA! Then I'd kick her.

Thanks. It's hard to keep so many people happy with the pace, but I'm trying.
