But the unexpected return of Sam, after years of absence, deeply disturbs the life of the odd couple.

A convoluted romantic triangle is at the center of a noir-ish melodrama from 1946 called The Strange Loves of Martha Ivers that is best known today as the official film debut of a young actor named Kirk Douglas.

It sets up a love story within a more toxic love story for Sam, for it's not long before he finds out that Martha ended up marrying Walter O'Neil Jnr (Kirk Douglas, in his feature film debut), and that the latter ended up becoming Iverstown's district attorney.
