Did you mean to give this such a high score, matt? I only ask because what you said about it doesn't seem very positive. Or is 7 about average for you?
A little about my rating system. 5/10 means I break even, that it was worth watching. This film could have been an 8, maybe even higher, but because of the flaws I saw, it got a 7. I remember giving "Still Alice" a 6/10, so I use a lot of films as context. Good question - thanks for the interest

Batman Begins -

Still holds up alright as far as origin-story films go. The fighting's a bit rough but there are some good actors involved. Planning on re-watching the other two films as well so we'll see how well this one stacks up.

Did you watch The Letter on a DVD?
No, I caught it on TCM. I might spring for the DVD one day. I really enjoyed it.

The General (1926)

First viewing of this silent classic and it lives up to everything I thought it would be. Buster Keaton is Johnnie Gray, the engineer of the locomotive called The General. When the Civil War breaks out, Johnnie is turned down for enlistment because the officers think he'll be better needed at the controls of his train. When his train is stolen, he takes off after it and wild and crazy adventures follow. Keaton shows his limberness and ability to pull off great stunts with seemingly little effort. Great movie.

Hands of the Ripper (1971)

Good Hammer Films flick with the late, lovely Angharad Rees as the daughter of the infamous Jack the Ripper who was traumatized seeing her mother murdered at the hands of her evil father. Now, when certain stimuli occurs around her, she goes bonkers and grabs the nearest sharp object and slashes away! Rees is excellent as the "troubled" young lady and Eric Porter is superb as the psychiatrist who takes her in and tries to help her. This is a very well-done and nicely-crafted horror/slasher movie and a great entry into the Hammer canon.

The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936)

Classic Errol Flynn adventure based on the Alfred Lord Tennyson epic poem which was based on the actual charge of British light cavalry against Russian forces during the Crimean War in 1854. Of course the filmmakers play fast-and-loose with the facts, and even have a large disclaimer at the beginning essentially saying so. Quite nice of them. Anyway, Flynn is a Major who is in love with Olivia De Havilland's character who is the daughter of his commanding officer. Unknown to him, she is secretly in love with his brother, a Captain in the same regiment as Flynn. This romantic angle wasn't all that necessary in my opinion, but they did use it later in the film. There is a sequence where men, women, and children are slaughtered by a character named Surat Khan, an Indian bad guy, and his men. Later Khan just happens to show up with the Russians at the finale, giving the cavalry their shot at revenge. And Flynn has to do the noble thing and keep his kid brother away from the final battle. There is plenty of adventure and action in the movie and the slaughter of all the people at the barracks is pretty strong stuff. But the best is saved for last with the charge of the title and of history. It's very exciting and alone worth watching the movie for, but you get more out of it by watching the whole picture. One of Flynn's best.

Not sure if I'm going to have to rewrite my old review that gave this a

L'Argent (1983)

Really disappointed with this one, maybe my expectations were too high but I found the whole thing forgettable. Storyline was good but I thought it got very messy plus some of the acting really put me off. I did give it a higher mark due to the ending which I did enjoy but overall I wasn't impressed.

I think Bresson is an acquired taste, I watched Pickpocket and whilst I enjoyed certain aspects I was not blown away. Then I watched Au hasard Balthazar and the acting style and framing felt much more effective and powerful, I thought that was a masterpiece. I've heard that A Man Escaped is his best film in terms of mixture of content and style.

The Gift (Joel Edgerton, 2015)

Pretty standard thriller that will be enjoyable for some but does not really say or do much cinematically. A few scary moments, but some really weak scenes too, despite the twists I began to lose interest the longer it went on. It's also difficult to forget Michael Bluth when Jason Bateman tries to act serious.

Youth (Paolo Sorrentino, 2015)

I can see why someone would hate this too, but for me this is a beautiful little film. I sat back and relaxed, taking in the images and sounds. Some fantastic performances, I found the film to be a sometimes poignant look at life, and sometimes a hilarious one. I loved the sense of humour of the whole thing, and I don't think I've laughed out loud as much in a while. I don't think there will be another film that manages to include Paloma Faith and Diego Maradona so brilliantly.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Minions (2015)

It's painfully obvious that they knew the merchandise would sell no matter what so they didn't even try.

Fatal Attraction - 5.8/10. The movie gets more dull every time i see it.

Becket - 7.8/10. Brilliant! Peter O' Toole and Richard Burton were amazing.

The Raid 2: Berandal (2014)
rewatch

This is how action is done

You know that place in movies where it reaches its climax and then slowly fades out? Well, The Raid 2 doesn't have that. Once this film reaches its climax, it doesn't fade out nor does it stay there. It keeps on introducing its audience to new highs, building layers taller and taller with dead bodies and broken bones. This film just doesn't have a stop button or an emergency break, there is no limit and nothing that is too much.

The good thing is, though, that this film is so well made and only gets better as it goes along, which ensures that it never gets boring or tiring. You think there is only so-so many times people can beat each other up, but you'll be surprised by how inventive and impressive this film moves itself along and creates a flow in motion and a flow of blood. And with a simple but effective story to tie things together this film creates what can only be called an epic piece of action filmmaking. I like the spark of emotional core from our main hero, oh, and even better, this is a hero that actually bleeds, suffers, gets injured. That's how it's done.

Is this movie perfect in every area? No. Does it try to be? No. The film has characters named Baseball Bat Man and Hammer Girl, do you really think it cares for story? No, but it delivers one anyway and I think it works great, though the actual action is obviously what truly holds it together.

Pretty much a perfect film for what it tries to do, which is why I give it a...

Minions (Pierre Cofin and Kyle Balda, 2015)

This was boring... A movie completely based on the Minions supposed cuteness (which worked way better on the Despicable Me films)...
I was expecting some funny jokes but didn't find any! Some musical and film references are ok and the intro promised a decent watching but it ended bieng a really underwhelming film.

K-On is better animated cutesy pornography.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
So you think if this thread was placed in "Games & Tabs" where "Movie Tab II" is, everybody's rep would shrink? And yes, they are the very same thing.
