Let the night air cool you off
Great job, Daniel. I appreciate all the time and work you put into this.

I am happy with the way the list turned out. It's missing several movies that I really love, but at least the top two turned out perfectly.

My list:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968; Stanley Kubrick)
2. The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer (1961; Masaki Kobayashi)
3. Psycho (1960; Alfred Hitchcock)
4. Yojimbo (1961; Akira Kurosawa)
5. The Exterminating Angel (1962; Luis Bunuel)
6. The Great Silence (1968; Sergio Corbucci)
7. Breathless (1960; Jean-Luc Godard)
8. Persona (1966; Ingmar Bergman)
9. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964; Jacques Demy)
10. Le Samourai (1967; Jean-Pierre Melville)
11. Peeping Tom (1960; Michael Powell)
12. The Apartment (1960; Billy Wilder)
13. Blind Beast (1969; Yasuzo Masumura)
14. X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963; Roger Corman)
15. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962; Tony Richardson)
16. The Bad Sleep Well (1960; Akira Kurosawa)

Well done Daniel. You handled this list very well. Any regrets that it is over?
Daniel will most likely suffer from rep withdrawal - that will be his regret.

Here's the video I had prepared for my EXCITING WIN:

And this was the video I had prepared in case Camo won:

is thouroughly embarrassed of this old username.
01. Pierrot le fou (#41)
13. Contempt (#65)
16. Dr. Strangelove (#4)
17. Woman in the Dunes (#19)
18. 2001: A Space Odyssey (#1)
21. Breathless (#59) -> rewatched this recently and I should have put it waaay higher
25. Onibaba (#62)

man, my picks didn't do so well :P

SEXY STRIKES AGAIN!

I voted for both. 2001 was my number 9 and Psycho my number 18. Psycho is great but I much prefer Vertigo. 2001 is a visual wonder. I got to see it on the big screen a few months ago in sold out theater. One of the best theatrical experiences I ever had. Turns out my prediction of this film was half right. 2001 did get the most #1 votes, but it took the top spot too. Glad to see that it did.
If I had done my list a couple of years ago then 2001: A Space Odyssey would have probably been closer to the bottom of of my list than the top, I have always thought it to be a great film, but at that point I would have only seen it once, on my computer, and I would have ranked more personal favourites above it.

Last year the BFI showed it in a load of cinemas across the UK, and I noticed that it was showing in Cardiff, where I live whilst I attend university. I booked tickets on the first day, right in the middle of the cinema, along with buying a ticket for my brother to come with me. Good job I booked in advance as it sold out and they had to open two screens for it. My brother had never seen it before, so I had no problems with buying him a ticket and making sure his first time viewing would be a fantastic one.

We both absolutely loved it. The first ten minutes is mainly a black screen, but the music alone gives you goosebumps, its was magnificent. The whole film was breathtaking and moving. By far the best experience I've had in the cinema.

There were a couple of other great moments that I remember too. When they had the intermission I overheard a group of people, a mix of young and old, talking about whether they had an intermission back when they saw it in '68, it was great to see a cinema with such a mixed audience, those who had already seen it and those youngsters seeing it for the first time. Also at the end of the film pretty much everyone in the cinema stood up and clapped, something I've never experienced for any other film.

So yeah, it was my number one pick. Based on this experience alone. Psycho was my number four. For my brother it was the same, but he had Psycho one place higher, so overall our votes didn't do much to effect the voting.

In fact (and I'll do a full check later) I would bet that almost all the lists that had 2001 on them also had Psycho on them. It's not surprising given how Kubrick and Hitchcock are two real favourites on this site.

Psycho was winning the countdown until the final few days I believe. No matter how high people ranked 2001, they were also including Psycho in their lists. The sheer popularity of it meant that it always managed to stay ahead of its competitor. Then towards the end 2001 finally overtook it, and managed to just hang on to seal the victory

I had both on my list. Psycho was my number 1, because, well it is the best movie of the 60's regardless of the vote tally. Hitchcock is the man. I think Rear Window and Vertigo will have chances to be a threat for the fifties countdown, but it will be hard to beat Psycho's number 2 spot.

2001 also made my list at number 25. I have a lot of respect for it, so it had to be on my list. I'm really looking forward to seeing it again too, something I can't say about Strangelove.

Congrats Daniel, hell of a list.

Well done Daniel. You handled this list very well. Any regrets that it is over?
Not at all. It's an experience I'd recommend to anyone, but definitely be prepared to put in the time and effort. There were stages in the first fifty where the process was quite tiring, days where I was tired, or days where I was busy and it felt like a chore to come on and post the two films, but that soon disappeared, maybe I should have prepared all the graphics ahead of time to make things easier for myself I am quite proud of myself that I never missed a day, or never posted late, that I only made one small mistake with a film, and apart from that there seems to have been no problems.

It was great to watch everyone's predictions, to see people dismiss films when I knew that they would be coming up soon. I think overall the list has a great balance of films on it, and it's been fantastic to host. I'm glad to see that everyone has enjoyed it so much

I totally guessed the order right because of that poster/banner in the first post of this thread, because see:

Starting from the bottom left, 2001 is #1.

Then going up, next is Psycho at #2.

Then The Good, the Bad and the Ugly at #3.

Going across the ocean, starting at the top right, you have a James Bond thing representing #4 and #5. This is where I had to just blindly guess where Dr. Strangelove and where Once Upon a Time in the West would be. But I got it right.

Below that, at #6, is The Graduate.

And if only I had known -- I would have got #7 right -- but this is what helped clue me in -- it's Lawrence of Arabia.

I have NO IDEA if this was done intentionally by Daniel, but that's exactly how I made my guesses.

Haha, nice theory. I made that banner for the original thread though before I had even received any lists. Weird how it turned out though.
It must be one of those -- what Rodent and I talk about -- synchronicities.

I think 6 should be my lucky number now.

Anyway, Psycho was my #1 movie.

2001 was my #5 movie.

Well put your feet up and enjoy yourself today dude. Ya earned it.

2001: A Space Odyssey was my #5

2001: A Space Odyssey is pure and raw beauty. There aren't any condiments added to makes things faster or add suspense. There is only music, a background of shining lights made by distant stars, and a spaceship spinning in a circular, meditative motion...

And that's when I realized I was watching a landmark in film history. Since then I (many years ago) I have loved this film.

2001 can be about a lot of things. It could be an allegory to evolution, the warning of machine taking over man, and many more. But I simply see it as art but into screen; into a three dimensional form, which is practically impossible. If you think Kubrick isn't a genius after seeing this film, you are brain dead. Even if you end up hating it, admitting that Kubrick is thy greatest man who ever looked through a camera is inevitable. With no CGI, almost zero plot, no sense of time or area,. It's the space version of Playtime.

While Playtime can end up only being clever, every moment in 2001 sends chills down your spine. The scene where a monkey discovering how to use a tool and using it to destroy an animal's bones already gives you multiple orgasms. Afterwards that same bone goes into space and holy sh*t a matching shot turns it into a spaceship!!!!

Yeah I think I might end up going to far with my write-up, so I'll calm down and write about HAL, who is such a great villain. He packs more personality than Joker and Lex Luther combined in my opinion. Easily the best aspect of this film, tied with surreal, psychedelic imagery. You want him to open a pod bay door? No can do, because he's HAL 9000 for extremely-intelligent-artificial-intelligence's sake!

The last 30 minutes of the film, the highlight, should be on Youtube, but it isn't. And even if I do find a video, it usually shows either 5 minutes of the journey to another dimensions or the bathroom with monolith scene. Obviously people don't get that 2001 is a film that is complete when connected as a whole. Never is a moment where the film stops to take a break or explain what's happening. It's too great for petty things like that.

I am soooo glad that 2001 made it to #1. This has officially restored some lack of trust among y'all MoFos. Lastly, thanks to Daniel for running a list for such a wonderful decade.

Here are my films that didn't make the cut and then my numbers 26-30. Sad that one more spot would have put the Grinch on the list.

13. Cleopatra

Probably just me and one other person had this on our lists, but I really liked it. I'm a sucker for epics that blow me away with their production. Even though this was considered a bomb, it really worked for me. I really liked the performances.

14. How to Steal a Million

Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn were both great in this film. I doubt this garnered many points either, but again, it was an interesting concept for a film for me. But of course I'm always a sucker for Hepburn.

21. One, Two, Three

While I wouldn't consider this one of Wilder's best films, it still adds to his impressive resume. And I just think that it is a funny film. James Cagney was the perfect choice for the lead in this film. While many think Hitchcock and Kurosawa will dominate the fifties countdown (and they will) I hope that Wilder will be a contender for a lot of votes too.

23. Dr. No

My third favorite Bond from the sixties, but that didn't stop me from putting it on this list. Sixties Bond is just the bomb. Plus it features the most iconic Bond girl to this date.

24. Barbarella

Hey I know Nostro voted for it! So don't make fun of me! It's a super fun film that will be fun to watch again.

And then these were my last 5 cuts:
26. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
27. Faces
28. Through a Glass Darkly
29. The Sound of Music
30. The Odd Couple

It’s A Classic Rope-A-Dope
My List:
1. The Apartment (8)
2. Once Upon A Time In The West (5) Words can't express how much I love this new favorite. That is not hyperbole, I have been trying to write my thoughts for three weeks.
3. The Birds (18) Pleasantly surprised this made top 20.
4. Lawrence Of Arabia (7) If movies can indeed be looked at objectively. This has a legitimate claim for greatest ever.
5. A Man For All Seasons- A shame this isn't thought more of, amazing script.
6. Becket- See above and add two great performances.
7. Play Time (31) My biggest surprise of 60's watching. Really tremendous.
8. The Graduate (6) Glad I rewatched this, didn't even have it on my preliminary list.
9. Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf (29) Mark put this one way higher on my radar then it was. Has a chance to be an all time favorite for sure. Amazing script and performances.
10. Psycho (2) My sixth favorite Hitchcock is #10 on my 60's list. The man was a boss.
11. Breakfast At Tiffany's (39) My Favorite Hepburn despite one cringe worthy character. Besides that I find it delightful.
12. Midnight Cowboy (10)
13. Elmer Gentry (48) Thanks Mark for introducing me to this, already looking forward to a second watch.
14. Lolita (56)
15. Cleopatra -Gets an undeserved bad rep. Pretty great epic. Looks amazing, and I am not just talking about Taylor.
16. Days Of Wine And Roses- Mildly surprised this didn't make a list of 100.
17. Through A Glass Darkly (81)
18. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (3) I need to see this again, been a long time.
19. Cool Hand Luke (12)
20. Dr. Strangelove (4)
21. Belle Du Jour (70)
22. Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (21)
23. Persona (11)
24. The Hustler (26)
25. The Grass Is Greener- 1 pointer, another great 60's script that people don't seem to appreciate.

20/25 made the list. Not too surprising. I estimate that I have only seen about 100 movies from the 60's.

54/100 seen. There are a handful here I really wanted to get to. Might be a year though as I start to concentrate on docs and 50's films now.

Thanks Daniel. You did a tremendous job. even if you couldn't stop the snooze fest from taking the top prize.

The thing isolated becomes incomprehensible
Mofos, I am proud you! We beat the anti-Kubrick army and elevated the most magnificent masterpiece ever to its deserved place.

When I am back from these glorious beaches in South of Spain (I know, I'm awesome) I'll write about my picks that made the top 10 and the ones which didn't make the countdown.
