Just for curiosity, can I please have a list of previous HoF nominations so I don't nominate one of those?

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Thanks Sean.
|
I was almost tempted to nominate the same movie I nominated in the first one, Farewell My Concubine, but I'm going to hold off for awhile longer. I love that movie, so much. I don't know why it's not more popular around here.
I'm really torn. Part of me wants to nominate this one movie that I think is tragically under seen and that I instantly fell in love with but another part of me wants to nominate a movie that really absolutely should be in the HoF and means a lot to me but I want to wait until the right time to nominate it. Hmmm |

I'm not at all sure what to nominate. Last time I joined so that I could make people watch a certain underseen movie and went in knowing exactly what I would nominate.
This time I'm going to have to ruminate on it a bit before I decide. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Do you reveal the noms next week Sean? Is it always like that?

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I can't make up my mind on a nominee. I'll send it by Tuesday though.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I dont think i will join this time around. I have a lot of life stuff to attend to, but it was really fun to be a part of the 5th Hall of Fame! Hopefully i will have more time for the 7th Hall of Fame :)

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I love Farewell My Concubine too.
Still undecided what to nominate so far. |

Nomination sent.

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Okay, I'm in as well. I haven't decided what to nominate yet though. I can't decide if I should go with a whore nomination or with an under seen gem, or something in between.
|
In between whore nomination and under seen gem would be:
Showgirls |

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I liked it too! I seen it at the theater when it came out. If memory serves me Roger Ebert gave it Thumbs Up. However Gene Siskel gave it Thumbs Down.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
OK, sent my nom in. Can't wait to find out what else we'll be watching.

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Finally settled on a nomination! This time I am not going to play it safe... at least I don't think I am ;)
If MovieGal is joining, she should be happy with this nomination! Anyways, I think I'll give it a rewatch tonight so I got the film fresh in my thoughts. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I can't decide. This is the first time I've done one of these general HoF. Does it have to be something worthy or can you choose something more lightweight that people might enjoy but not count amongst the greatest films of all time. I'm a bit put off by the fame aspect!
|
Go big or go home is my vote Christine.;) I don't think there is an exact answer to that, everyone plays it different. I pick a favorite that I think has a good chance of being broadly enjoyed. A lot of people go obscure though.

I've been trying to decide what movie to choose for this, and I still have no idea what to nominate. The only things I've decided is that: 1) I think it should be something that most people probably haven't seen yet, rather than something common that everyone already has an opinion about so they might not re-watch it. And 2) I think it should be something thought-provoking so people can discuss it after watching it, rather than just giving an opinion, and quickly moving on to the next movie. |

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I will join this! :) I just need to figure out my nomination! It's not going to be easy!
|
I submitted my nomination. Hopefully everyone will like it. :)
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I haven't bumped this because it seems like everyone that wants to be in has seen it. You have till 6EST tomorrow to get in your nominations. I have 14 not including mine. I have already watched two, one of the benefits of being host. :D
|
Your nominations are up along with the dead line in the first post. We may have one more. Neiba sent a nomination but I had to ask him to send another because his nomination had just been nominated last round.
If you sent a write up, have no fear, I will put it in the first post of the individual threads I will be creating. Yoda gave us the okay for that. They will be in the ongoing tournaments section. The reason I decided to put your write ups there is because not everybody sent one, hope that is okay with everyone. Hang tight for the threads. I have to go off line for a bit but will get them up tomorrow at the latest. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I give Woman in the Dunes my blessing
|
I've seen three of the nominated films, including my own - All Quiet On The Western Front (but I'll need to rewatch it as it's been awhile), Brokeback Mountain, and A Perfect World.
|
You can watch All Quiet here up until the ninth. You'll have to do some signing up though.
|
All Quiet (my nomination) is the only film I have seen.
Oh god, Rushmore? I have to watch another Wes Anderson film after hating Grand Budapest Hotel? Ugh.... Maybe I'll like, maybe I'll hate it even more than GBH. (That'll be hard as I gave it ) |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
A good pull this time. I've seen a good number of these, my favorites being Late Spring (obviously one of the greatest movies ever made), Ten (one of Kiarostami's greatest and most poilitical films), Sonatine (a very strange and relaxed gangster movie), and A Perfect World (one of Eastwood's best)
I won't be joining you with this whole school + living in a different country thing taking up too much of my time, but I'll be around for discussions of the films I've seen |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Whoa, I thought for sure you had seen Woman in the Dunes, bluedeed.
|

I haven't seen many of these.
Das Boot, 3 times, last watch about 15 years ago. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, 3 times, last watch about a year ago. Foreign Correspondent, once almost 20 years ago. Woman in the Dunes, once in December. A Perfect World, once about 20 years ago. The Sweet Hereafter, once about 10 years ago. |
I've seen 9 of those and like them all - but The Sweet Hereafter, Das Boot and Woman in the Dunes (along with my own nomination) are the ones I love.
Looking forward to seeing Ten the most of the others and it is a timely nomination because it will be 10th Kiarostami film :) |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I've seen Foreign Correspondent, Raise the Red Lantern, and Rushmore out of these. I watched Foreign Correspondent recently and enjoyed it, and the other two were both movies I was planning on rewatching because i don't think I got as much out of them as I could have the first time around.
I'm especially excited for Ten, because the four other Kiarostami films I've seen were masterpieces. Also am looking forward to Late Spring, A Perfect World, Sonatine, and The Sweet Hereafter. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Alright I have added all the threads. Yoda was nice enough to let us do that so lets make use of them. I hope it gets people to check in and read what others are saying more frequently.
Inmate joined us and I added his nomination to the first post. If Neiba sends a nomination tomorrow I will add it and extend the due date. I know goodies provided a you tube link for her nomination. I have also found Ten, Woman In The Dunes, and Late Spring on you tube. If you have trouble finding anything else let me know. I won't be able to find it for you, but know how to find someone who will. :D Off to bed. Later MoFo. |
Blue Car, Sonatine, and Raise the Red Lantern are all on Netflix streaming.
I just watched Pierrot Le Fou in January so I'll probably wait a couple months to rewatch that and Woman in the Dunes. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Oh no. You mean I have to watch Brokeback?!?!?
|
I had originally planned to nominate Onibaba, but changed my mind after Gbgoodies and Raul watched it, and didn't care for it.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
You should have done that cricket, it's high on my watchlist. Damn you! :D
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Still, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead is a dope nomination. That's a really good movie.
|
Onibaba is on Hulu, Swan.

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Neiba sent his nomination. It is Fail Safe, a Lumet movie from 1964. Add it to your list. I extended the dead line. That is all, we are officially closed for business.
Citizen pointed out I should have said who nominated the films in the individual threads. I will take care of that soon. Should have done it in the first place. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I had about 8 films in contention and cut it down to a final 3. The Grapes of Wrath and Good Morning Vietnam rounded out my top 3 for my choices this time.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I didn't like Grapes Of Wrath that much. If it ever gets nominated I would definitely rewatch though.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I just rewatched it a couple days ago. Love it but feared it wouldn't do great.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Its been a couple years so I am reluctant to comment. One of those that just left my mind. Sometimes things just don't hit you right. If I basically completely forget it, it needs a rewatch though. I don't remember lines or scenes great, I usually remember story arcs though. That film has all but left me.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
The Grapes of Wrath was one of the first old films that I seen. I loved it at the time. Now that I watch movies with a more critical eye, I'm not sure what I would think of it.

Unfortunately the fact that my dad holds it in such high regard isn't a good sign. He and I agree on very little when it comes to movies. But we'll see how this goes. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
This time dad's right:D It's an awesome film.
|
I had Fail Safe on my 1964 list, but it's been a few years so I'm looking forward to watching it again.

I wish you had nominated Good Morning Vietnam. I've always wanted to watch it, but I've never gotten around to it. This HoF would have been a good excuse to see it. |

It's one of the few movies nominated that I've already seen, and there's a great chance that it will land high on my list. |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Raise the Red Lantern is youtube too, but only use it as a last resort as the quality isn't great and part of this film is it's use of colour
very much looking forward to this , there's a few I've not seen and a few it's been a while. Got to set out and find them now! |

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Ive found some of the older ones on youtube - All Quiet on the Western Front, Foreign Correspondance, Late Spring, Woman in the Dunes.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
everything's available in illegal ways :)
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I too thought about nominating Grapes of Wrath! It made a big impression on me the first time I saw it some weeks ago!
And I'm happy Fail-Safe is receiving so much love! I feel it's a bit in the shadow of Dr. Strangelove because it's from the same year and has a similar theme, that's why I chose it! I only watched Woman in the Dunes and The Man from Earth and they will both need a rewatch, for different reasons! Das Boot has been on my watchlist for ages so this will be a chance to finally watch it! It looks a very solid list overall! :) |
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I've only seen 3 nominees, and one of them was yesterday (Sonatine). I have quite a ways to go and I would like to rewatch the other two I've seen.
|
Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
I've seen six of these already, so have quite a few to watch. I'd like to rewatch the ones I have seen as well.
Brokeback Mountain, Das Boot and Sonatine are all excellent films. All Quiet on the Western Front is interesting. I wasn't keen on The Sweet Hereafter or Rushmore, but I'm going to watch them again. I'm looking forward to the others. Some of them I've been meaning to watch for a while, while some others I've never even heard of. |

Exactly, Sane! I feel so much more from a film when the director allows us to do that. I felt like The Sweet Hereafter seeped into my pores. It wasn't a movie I could shake very easily. The character kept popping into my head long after.
I have a huge problem with directors (Nolan in particular) that need to lead you by the nose and make sure you get exactly what they are putting down. It's why I find his films hard to rewatch. You've gotten every thing you need to by the first viewing. I've seen The Sweet Hereafter several times now and I still find a new way of looking at certain characters or discover a new way of looking at grief and it's effects. |
I wanna nominate one too!
I has been a couple of months since I watched a live action film. Joining will push on me to watch more stuff. |

Re: The 6th Hall Of Fame
Now I have some nice live action films to watch. It's been some time since I watched a good live action film, in fact, nearly a year.
I never watched this Brokeback mountain film, though I have watched all the Japanese films nominated more than once. I also nominated a hardcore otaku animated film. I was thinking of nominating Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's but I decided to be a little more conservative and nominate something more interesting since that movie is not really special in any way (well, it's moe action). Edit: I sent a rather long text detailing why I nominated it because I do not regard it as a specially "well crafted" movie. |
