The two of them cultivate an excellent dynamic of a family unit with some "us against the world" instincts, but at the same time a dynamic in which Tom is beginning to have a more autonomous view of how she wants to live her life.

Will chooses to live in the woods out of determination while Tom has lived there her first thirteen years just because that's how things simply were.

Living outside is all Tom (his daughter) has really ever known, so we also see how she adjusts and what she thinks about the average way of living in the U.S.
