Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America: The First Avenger
Directed By: Joe Johnston

The Story
I first seen this movie back when it was released in the cinema, and to be honest i hated it. I'm not quite sure why, but i hated everything about it. I hated the story, the character, the cast, there was just nothing i liked about this movie at all. Anyway, fast forward 5 years and to my suprise i actually enjoyed it a little more. Maybe having seen all the other Marvel movies made me appreciate it more. Or maybe back in 2011 i was just expecting something entirely different than what Captain America was all about (the war). Now for me Captain America was a movie of two halves. The first half was great. It was interesting, it felt like it was going somewhere, it was getting exciting. Then in the second half the movie falls flat on it's face. The movie never reachers that WOW moment, and compared to some of the other Marvel movies the action feels mediocre.

The Cast
The cast and characters are okay. I enjoyed Chris Evans alot more this time around as Captain America, but thats probably because he's grown on me over the years. Hayley Atwell is great as Peggy Carter, tho i felt like her relationship with Captain America was cut short rather stupidly. I also thought Hugo Weaving was great up untill he took his face off, then the character looked ridiculous. He looked very cartoony, and it completley killed the character off.
Movie Trivia: Chris Evans declined the role three times before accepting the part - not out of dislike for the role, but because he feared what the effects of the sudden increase of fame would be on his private life. Then Robert Downey Jr.. convinced him to take the part and thus gain the freedom to sign on any other role he'd want to after. After that, he had a meeting with the director and the producers who convinced him to take the role.

Originally cameo appearances were planned in the film for James "Logan" Howlett (Wolverine) and Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto), who were present during World War II (Logan was a soldier and Lehnsherr was a prisoner of war). These cameos were scrapped due to rights issues.

Hayley Atwell surprisingly touching Chris Evans' chest as he emerged from the pod upon turning into Captain America was very much improvised, and the surprise on her face is genuine, as she admitted in interviews she was very taken by Chris' physique and nearly broke character and ruined the take that made it into the film as a result.

At the Expo, Howard Stark demonstrates his semi-functional "Reversion" technology. It's an obvious precursor to Tony Stark's "Repulsors", perfected for his Iron Man armor. They both even have an orange glow when functioning.
Marvel Ties
I think this movie ties in quite well with the rest of The Marvel movies. First off we got to meet Bucky, who we all know becomes the Winter Soldier. Then we also got to meet Howard Stark, who is of course Tony Stark's father. Here we find out Howard Stark has worked on various goverment projects during WWII, and that he also designed Captain America's shield, which was pretty cool. And of course we also see a cameo from Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) at the end of the movie, which is the set up for The Avengers.

Verdict
Overall Captain America The First Avenger is a pretty good movie. Don't get me wrong it's not great, but it's not bad either. The first half of the movie is very strong, but the second half is a little flat. I certainly enjoyed it alot more with this re-watch tho.
