I get it's becoming a trend for franchises to make sequels where they ignore all the dirt spots and only acknowledge the ones people fondly remember. I personally like Terminator 3, but I know it does...

After we're introduced to this Corey storyline, the second act does bring back Michael Myers, and does end the story of Laurie and Michael in a very definitive way (at least for this continuity timeline).

If anything, sidestepping to his character is an admission by David Gordon Green and Danny McBride that deconstructing Michael Myers is a futile exercise, but its a lesson they learned two movies ago in the 2018 Halloween, and that movie was at least well paced.
