The film starts off promisingly with a self-aware tone (complemented by Forest Whitaker as the matter-of-fact narrator whose intonations lend this potentially gritty film a vibe more becoming of your average Wes Anderson film) but as time wears on the film sinks deeper and deeper into being the kind....

Proper film structure would tell you that you should have side characters have small effects on plot for the duration of the movie, because it feels cheap when the main problem is fixed up by some guy who the audience doesn't even know exists until he saves the day.

Director and screenwriter Rick Famuyiwa has mounted an intelligent and winning story that is based on reality but the reality of Malcolm's predicament is only the blueprint for a truly unconventional cinematic trip that makes jarring and unexpected jumps from fantasy to reality and based them around....
