Set in Harlem in 1987, Claireece "Precious" Jones is a 16-year-old African American girl born into a life no one would want. School is chaotic and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and a secret--she can't read.

The film is about a 16-year-old child whose only concept of self-worth is what she can do for her abusive mother who is actually the better half of her parents since her father is an incestuous serial-rapist who impregnates her with two children.

Precious wants a better life too, evidenced in some sweet fantasy sequences, and she deserves it, but the character I saw in this movie wanted that better life handed to her and didn't really want to do any of the work involved in getting a better life.

The one character it follows is Precious, an overweight illiterate teenage girl who is pregnant with her second child from her biological father.
