The claustrophobia we feel in the classroom and the apartment juxtaposed with the freedom we feel when Antoine is in the wide open spaces of Paris, or even how big his friends apartment feels when he is away from his parents.

Traffaut's pacing in this film I think jumps between slow- and often too long or pointless- cuts, to quick, snappy scenes.

The 400 Blows part of the French New Wave film movement that transformed the way movie stories were portrayed on the screen.
