Benn served as the housekeeper at Darlington Hall in the 1930s, and her and Stevens employer was the Earl of Darlington, better known as Lord Darlington, who supported Nazi Germany and died after the war.

Stevens is anticipating a reunion with Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), the housekeeper he worked with during his tenure at the manor under the former owner, Lord Darlington, a suspected Nazi sympathizer.
