he visually establishes the central conflict in the very first scene, mom and frank on one side of the court against dad and walt on the other in a competitive game of tennis, and the interplay in this scene sets up all the character dynamics we'll see play out throughout the film.

It's Brooklyn 1986 where we are introduced to Bernard and Joan Berkman, a college professor and writer and his wife, also a writer, who are the parents of moody high schooler Walt and the hypersensitive pre-teen Frank.
Holden Pike
There is a palpable "us against them" feeling in the family, between Bernard & Walt on one hand and Joan & Frank on the other.
