The movie has some elements similar to Lorenzo's Oil or Miracles from Heaven, but it's not those.
Details I remember:
The boy has a mystery illness for which he is taking many medications, but they aren't really helping and he is slowly getting worse. The mom hears of an experimental medical program, but it is across the country and they would have to fly there. By this time the boy is in the hospital, and the hospital won't release the boy unless they can get someone else who is a medical doctor to fly with him in the plane.
The mom finds a family friend (or maybe someone in their church) who is no longer a practicing doctor, but still has his license, who agrees to fly with the boy, and the hospital releases the boy into his care, and they make the trip. Once they get to the doctor with the experimental program, there are other obstacles. E.g. the doctor tells them the program is full. But eventually through some semi-miraculous circumstances, he gets into the program after all, and it cures his illness.
