My review
So this was banned by the East German censors as it depicted the drudgery of life behind the Iron Curtain in the 1960s. That in itself is kind of fascinating. Everything is bland from the buildings to the music (no British Invasion it seems), the cars and so on. There's a scene where a group of tourists (I assume from West Germany) stops and takes pictures. I think they were perplexed at the life they were seeing and treated East Germany like a museum full of old artifacts. I can see why the censors didn't like.
The plot around the young couple going through a divorce is kind of secondary. In fact, not much happens. There is absolutely no passion in this relationship and I guess this was meant to represent the society as a whole?? The most interesting scene is when the young man's bosses questions him about his failing marriage because they are required to. The Stasi was never far away in East Germany.
It bothered me that they kept referring to the young, attractive wife as old and past her prime. Both actors and characters were in their mid 20s. Not sure if this was meant to have a bigger meaning?
Not much of a love story but a good, unintentional peak behind the Iron Curtain. 6.5/10
