Freddy Vs. Jason - a review by "Monkeypunch"
Talk about the ultimate in 1980's nostalgia.
Freddy Kruger, the star of 7 Nightmare on Elm Street films, and Jason Vorhees, star of 10 Friday the 13th films, go head to head in a ridiculous fight to the death in easily the best made film either one has ever been in.
Lets get one thing straight. Freddy Vs. Jason is a stupid movie. This did not take away ANY of my enjoyment of it, however. I really liked it. It has all the hallmarks of both series': Gratuitous nudity, grisly murder, gallows humor, and endless amounts of fake blood. But this one has something that the other films did not, it is aware that nobody takes these films seriously, and as such, has endless fun tweaking it's genre and it's stars, as well as offering up a few cheap scares. Director Ronny Yu has a real affection for the old 1980's "slasher" genre, and it shows.
The plot is simple. Freddy Kruger has lost his power to scare, and he resurrects Jason to murder some kids on Elm Street so that the town will think he's back, people will have nightmares again, and he can go on a killing spree just like old times. Only, Jason is a mindless juggernaut, he won't stop killing people even after he's served his purpose. There's also a plot about some teenage kids trying to stop both of them, but that is really unimportant. The big attraction is the Freddy/Jason smackdown, and the film delivers on that big time.
Freddy Vs. Jason is not in any way a cinematic masterpiece, it is like the American equivalent to a japanese monster movie. Two monsters fight, one wins, the end. But the film is fun as all hell, with Robert Englund giving a manic performance as the undead Freddy Krueger, and some nice supporting work fom a bunch of unknowns as the "Spam" (A horror movie term for people who are only in the film to be killed.).
I would give Freddy Vs. Jason *** (3 Stars out of a possible 5)
(some day, I will revie a NON horror title, but right now, I am in a horror movie phase....
)
