swimming pool gateway movie?

trying to remember a movie that was around late 80s early 90s. basically a horror sci fi involving a man's swimming pool. i say swimming pool because i remember him coming out of his swimming pool at the end when he finally got back home. possibly another scene is him in a desolate "alternate reality" where he meets a western style old man who has a six legged creature like a small dog. the old man gives this creature alcohol in a bowl. i know its not twilight zone and it was in color. just cant remember much other than that. not even sure if those scenes go with each other but willing to wade through movies until i find the swimming pool movie. ty for any help offered

House (1986)

The horror movie House (not that House) has several portals connected to one another through different parts of the house. The portal pool effect comes into play when Roger explores the abyss behind the bathroom mirror, and ends up falling into a black ocean that leads down into a river in his Vietnam-based Mental World. Diving into the river again causes him to surface in the swimming pool behind the house, which was the same Portal Pool that his son got lost in several years before.

It's been a while but I think you've got a lot of House in your description and a little House 2 in their as well, pretty sure the "western style old man" was in House 2.
