The Orphanage was scary as hell... (no spoilers)

I just got back from watching "The Orphanage"

You want to talk about some ****ed up stuff....this movie made me pee a little. And I'm the kind of guy who thinks horror flicks are cheesy and lame. (the only movies that ever scared me to the bone were The Shining, and The Ring. Aside from those movies even the exorcists makes me laugh.)

Anyways, the only reason I decided to see this movie was because of its relation to Pan's Labrynth. Well, The Orphanage definitely delivered on its promise to mess with my head. I never want to see kids ever again.

If you're in the mood for a movie thats scary AND good at the same time, go see this movie. You will pee a little too because the things in this movie build up so much stress, you start begging for a jump scene which in this movie, is not a main source of creepiness.

Goodnight.

Does anyone know what this films specific relationship to Pan's Labyrinth is? If it's Del Toro I'll definitely see it. The Devil's Backbone is a great film as is Pan's Labyrinth. I didn't even register the subtitles after about 5 minutes in either of those films... they just became part of the experience and not a hindrance at all.

Will your system be alright, when you dream of home tonight?

Del Torro has worked on both,

Um, isn't it a Spanish movie..with like...subtitles...and stuff?

Haha. I almost thought about warning any lurking rednecks to stay away from this movie if you "dont know how to read good."
After 5 minutes of reading subtitles you won't even know you're doing so.

EDIT: exactly like sir toose said.

Del toro is the link between this film and Pan's Labrynth. Also, like PL it contains very eerie and well choreographed shots. Very powerful. I can't even begin to tell you about all the little things that are embedded in this movie. Seriously, go see it.

Lets put a smile on that block
I’m really surprised there isn’t more recent buzz about this film on the forum. Has anyone else seen it yet? If not, I honestly could not recommend it enough.

I managed to catch it on DVD this weekend and I really have to say, I was gobsmacked. The story focuses on a couple and their son who move into a beautiful old building that used to be an Orphanage that the mother grew up in. She has happy memories from it, and decides she wants to open a care home for mentally handicapped children. Her son, also adopted has a thing about imaginary friends. I know this is nothing knew here, creepy kids, speaking to thin air. Its all been done before, but thankfully, they don’t stick to this format for long. After a walk along the beach, the little boy and his mother explore a nearby cave, where the boy meets a new imaginary friend who he invites back to the house. And so begins the horror. All manner of terrifying noises and strangeness begin to occur, very similar along the lines of The Others and The Sixth Sense. And then her son disappears. I won’t go on because the plot is so intense it would be hard to follow if I wrote it up. Plus I would not want to spoil what turns out to be a fascinating, terrifying and amazing story that leads to a highly emotional ending. Truly original storytelling here which leans far more towards classic, creeping horror than the torture porn and shock tactics we are now so used to. Juan Antonio Bayona does an amazing job in his first theatrical release, and Belén Rueda is superb as our main protagonist Laura, searching for her lost kid, you really get caught up in all the emotion, confusion and sadness as she hunts for her child. Awesome acting here. The film itself looks beautiful with fantastic cinematography highlighting the beauty of the orphanage, the utter spookyness of children hiding in the shadows and just how terrifying CCTV footage can be.

I read Marks review of it in his thread and I have to agree, the script and plot is so tight, you find yourself watching as it goes along, trying to figure out the mystery, shouting at the screen what you thinks going on, and generally shouting in horror at certain points. (Every part with that horrid old woman in made me squirm big time. Especially the bit after the accident…*shudder*)

Del Torro is a friend of Bayona, and when Bayona was having trouble getting funding for the script, Del Torror read it, loved it immediately and offered to produce. By the end of the film, you can easily pick up on similarities between Pans Labyrinthine and other Del Torro features…

Anyway, in case you cant tell, I really loved this. And highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

Yes,
I saw it at the cinema and loved it, best chiller since 'The Others' in my opinion. Plus I didn't see the twist coming, great stuff

\m/ Fade To Black \m/
It sounds like a awsome film, I love chillers like this so I cant wait to see it.

Saw it on it's premiere day here in the Netherlands. Pretty good movie indeed, but it did not really scare me. That was actually the only thing that dissapointed a bit, there wasn't a moment that I was truly biting my nails/looking away and when the movie was over I did not have the feeling I just saw a scary movie. Ofcourse there's the sudden unsuspected loud noise that catches you, but apart from that nothing was truly scary to me. It is, however, put together very well, the story does indeed keep you guessing right up until the end, the movie is shot in a very beautiful way and the acting is solid. Definately a very enjoyable watch.
