O' Neal is the getaway driver working for the highest bidder. Dern is a cop with no scrupls and is so crazy he uses baseball satistics to help him work out who's working for him and who's working against him, while trying to catch O' Neal any way he can.
The Driver plays like an old low budget 40's and 50's B movie film noir complete with bad dialogue. It also go's to show no madder how good the two main characters are if the script is not so swift the film lack in areas but is made up for in it's fast paced car chases accompened by director Hill's visual style and Philip Lathrop Cinematography When the movie stops to take a breather the dialogue between actors becomes corny & cheese but when the film is all over the cheese lines don't become so important anymore you just think that this action movie kick some seroius butt.

For those who love there car stunts at actual speed and want to smell the rubber coming off the screen this is the film.

Deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Bullitt, The french Connection. Gone In 60 Seconds (original), Vanishing Point (original) and Ronin. This one is helmed by the man Walter Hill. (The Warriors, Extreme Predjudice)

The testosterone driven tale features Ryan O Neal doing his best Steve McQueen impersonation as the best getaway driver a round. A pro all the way this guy never gets caught and can do anything with a car. Bruce Dern is blood hound like cop with morality issues on his tail.

Sure the script could have been polished but the action scenes make you forget all about it.

Noyt for everyone but those who dig the modern incarmnations of the genre should see how rev head wet dreams should really look.

A high ranking guilty pleasure all the way.

NB* The game of the same name was based on this film and several scenes from teh film feature in the original Driver game.
