The People's Republic of Clogher
I'll paste my list that I put up on another MB (some of these weren't released in '04, but I saw them last year).

Best -

Zatoichi - Kitano's best since Sonatine for me.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Simply delightful.

Spartan - Mamet does twisty, noiry stuff (again). Not for everyone but I loved it.

Capturing The Friedmans - Amazing documentary which I'm still thinking about.

Open Range - Back to basics for Costner with a superb western.

Monster - Charleze Theron, deserved Oscar, intriuging film.

Shaolin Soccer - Great fun (including the subtitle translation) which set my mind thinking about a future Shaolin Snooker. ;-)

Shaun of the Dead - Perfectly pitched RomZomCom.

Touching the Void - Wonderful drama-documentary detailing one man's fortitude (with some of the year's best swearing thrown in).

Worst -

The Day After Tomorrow - I believe the phrase is 'Who's the daddy?'

Cabin Fever - Nasty little movie with no redeeming qualities from the so-called 'new king of horror'.

Secret Window - Oh dear. Good cast + hack director + Steven King = Horrible mess.

Something's Gotta Give - Nancy Meyers should be banned from going near a studio, sooo sweet I had to visit the dentist afterwards.

The Missing - A Ron Howard western (need I say more?)

Gothika - Hilariously bad, with a twist my 6 year old could have spotted 20 minutes in.

The Butterfly Effect - Darko-lite. Maybe if I was a teenager I could have enjoyed it - I'm not, so I didn't.

Godsend - De Niro looks painfully embarassed all the way through this TV-Moviesque nonsense.

The Village - Tripe."

Revision no. 1:

1. The Aviator
2. Shaun of the Dead
3. The Incredibles
4. Hotel Rwanda
5. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
6. House of Flying Daggers
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Still waiting on Silver City, Steam Boy, 2046, and a few others.

I still need to see Million Dollar Baby and Bad Education. I think both'll be here in the next couple weeks. But I can tell you I'm pretty sure Van Helsing won't be on my list.

Well, that's just a crying shame.

I'm yet to see a whole heap, of course, but as a blogger, I felt obligated to write a tentative list at least.

Bad Education gets here soon as well. I can't wait.

There are a few others I just won't get to see in time for my list, stuff I either missed from earlier in the year or that hasn't opened here or whatever: Vera Drake, Being Julia and The Assassination of Richard Nixon are three I haven't seen I wish I had. And I haven't seen Kinsey, even though it's been around.

Scoff if you must but I genuinely liked that movie. I thought it was a pretty competant alternative to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen adaptation... which is something I've been jonesing for ever since LXG sucked.

Anyhow, it's an pretty good blockbuster, but it probably won't make my final list either. To give you an idea of what I mean, here's what it beat out so far:
Alien vs. Predator; The Bourne Supremacy; The Butterfly Effect; Cutie Honey; I, Robot; Kill Bill: Vol. 2; Napoleon Dynamite; Spiderman 2; Starsky & Hutch.

edit~ Darn, and I was hoping you, or someone else here with decent taste would give me a quick review of Bad Education.
