Movies that make you feel "hip" because you like them.

I got for good luck my black tooth.
This thread is dedicated to films of many different types. Films that give you that, dare I say, elitist feeling. Films that are not acessible to the common person and only people like you can appreciate. Films which you feel cool being able to share with others and wow them with your amazing taste. Even films that just have the X-factor: they are undeniably cool and you can't put your finger on why. Get the idea? List 'em and discuss 'em.

Reservoir Dogs

The Royal Tenenbaums

Dogville

Tampopo - my sushi chef was thrilled when I said "arigato" for the meal, after seeing this film. Scored major points with him.

Fallen Angels - Kar Wei Wong is more widely known for In the Mood for Love and this year's 2046, but back in 1995, he released this tale of hipsters that is a very fun watch.

Le Passion de Jeanne d'Arc - made in 1929, features one of the founders of a major theatrical movement (Artaud) and is a brilliantly acted, historically important film. Also, it's just damn cool.

Trainspotting-My mom's friends are so impressed when I talk to them about this movie that revolves around heroin, Scottish people, and Iggy Pop music
City of God-Just knowing I watched this movie about life in the slums of Rio De Janeiro makes me feel superior to the people around me

What is it about Get Shorty that people like so much. I thought it was fun at times, but at others there was nothing much about it that interests me. I also find the movie references a too self congratulatory and yet too few. If they were going to make a movie about a movie lover and other movies in general they should have committed to that aspect and made it chock full of references or not done them at all. They just didn't seem to commit to their idea IMO. Plus I just can't buy Travolta as a gangster. Not that I have anything against you and the others who love the film Lance, I'm just trying to get some discussion going.

What about Pulp Fiction?
Another movie that makes me feel hip thanks to the dynamite dialogue and Samuel L. Jackson's awesome performance.

Great movie but Travolta seems to be trying too hard to me. When I watch him, I always think of him as a person and not his character and I could never imagine him as a gangster. Though I agree with you about Sammy J's performance. My favorite movie character ever.

I think we have two definitions of 'hip' going here:
Film Geek Hip - when you're in the know on seldom-seen films
Generally Hip - when you see something that makes you want to wear a beret and call everyone "Daddy-O".

Lola rennt
I’ll be honest. I’m a movie snob of sorts. Sometimes I literally look at people with contempt because they like a certain movie. Other times I’ll catch myself thinking that way and chastise myself until I stop. I do and do not like being snobbish, though it does have its share of benefits. The main benefit is this: I get to see lots of really great flicks all the time. Because I’m an elitist, I don’t waste my time with the Deuce Bigalows and The Brothers…four of them or not. Because I’m not spending hard earned cash on crap like that, I have more dough and time to see really cool films like Lola rennt. Not only is this one of my favorite German films, but it’s also one of the hippest, coolest, and smartest thrillers I’ve ever seen. I feel ‘hip’ when I turn somebody else on to this gem of a flick. I feel ‘cool’ when I can open somebody else’s eyes to something with more panache…more style, than the stool softener usually offered to us by Hollywood anymore. Basically, I feel cool turning people on to great movies they had never heard of before...and feel like a loser when I'm part of the herd pushing my way to the front row to see...

Hip has so many definitions and no definition at the same time. It would be cool to explore all of those definitions and non-definitions in this thread. Maybe after a while we can even make a list of the hippest movies of all time.

Gee...How did I ever guess which film Se7en would choose?

...and it's a great choice too.

Randomly visiting for now
Snob Hip: Dogville, Lawrence of Arabia
Cool Hip: Fight Club, Donnie Darko (extreme and awesome).

Only feel slightly superior when I discuss movies like Dogville rather than movies like Raise Your Voice (Hillary Duff), I pity the fool who does that *superiority complex rising

I am having a nervous breakdance
Stalker

Drop that title to any common man and all his prejudice about film snobs will be confirmed. It's questionable if it will make you feel hip though. Oh, let's just say it will...

now they were out - they were wild with freedom. They weren't thinking about the slavery of poverty. Or the slavery of welfare and food stamps. The rest of us would be all right until the poor learned how to make atom bombs in their basements.

The People's Republic of Clogher

'Cos I'm the only person I know who owns it and it's probably my most 'lent out' film right now - once people have seen Dead Man's Shoes.

Snob Hip~ The 400 Blows, because everyone who hasn't heard of it thinks it's porn, and you can give them that exasperated eyeroll and explain it's French New Wave.

Let them think it's porn, then tell them it's about a boy. Wait to see their reaction then.

"Oh, hell. French child porn is not only acceptable, it's heralded as landmark cinema!"
