Need recommendations

Tools

Now that I've finally got some income I have tons of money to rent with.

I would like some recommendations for good sci-fi and horror films.

Sci-fi is my fave genre and horror is where I lack the most in viewing.

Obviously I can't say what I've seen or not so just recommend everything that is really good (since I believe that everything deserves at least one viewing).

I rented that yesterday because I'm a HUGE Carpenter fan. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed in the least. This film is top notch entertainment. Spooky as hell too!

I now need to find it on dvd.

Yeah, Carpenters movies are great, his older ones are better than his new ones though.

Funny, most people seem to hate this movie. I saw it in the theater and soon discovered that it is my second favorite Carpenter movie, a league behind The Thing.

My favorite Carpenter always has and probably will forever be Big Trouble in Little China . I love the chinese mythology and kung-fu.

Horror

Dawn of the Dead
Evil Dead
An American Werewolf In London
The Shining
Salem's Lot
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween
Dead and Buried
Day of the Dead
Night of the Living Dead
Zombie
The Other
Frankenstein: The True Story
The Exorcist
The Sentinel
Freaks
Blair Witch Project
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
Phantasm

If you want the best combination of sci-fi and horror, then look no further than John Carpenter's The Thing. A timeless classic.

Follow the White Rabbit ...
Well you've already got quite a list there, but I'm sure I can make some small contribution ^_^

... Of which I'd recommend picking up the Nosferatu DVD. I have the British Film Institute's release of this disc, and am not sure of the exact differences between it and the standard US release (however I believe it's a superior version). The new restored print is very impressive, replicating the tints and tones (blue and brown mainly) of the nitrate original. James Bernard (of many of the classic Hammer horror movies) has also added a much improved new orchestral score (stereo). Extras aren't huge, but substantial enough (in terms of extra's the US two-disc set has the upper hand).

Now if you're talking sci-fi DVD's, if you wait a few weeks you'll be able to purchase the two-disc special edition of Metropolis.
