What does the "x" in the title mean?

vs.? censored? "crosses"? unknown integer (as in algebra)? parted from (as in "ex")? a single kiss? "times" (as in multiplication)? unknown factor? "together with"? one third alcohol (wherein "xxx" = alcohol)? inappropriate for people under age 18? half a set of human chromosomes? location of buried treasure? in error? accomplished (as in "crossed" or "checked" off the list)? "by" (as in measurements: 8" x 11")? "sign here"? ten (Roman numeral)? death of (as in an x over each eye)? bizarre woke newspeak (like in "Latinx" or "Womxn")?

"The “x” confirms what the synopsis has already hinted at, which is that the sequel won’t be a rematch. An “x” between two names signifies a collaboration, meaning that the new movie is pairing them together instead putting them in conflict with each other."

So basically this is a buddy movie. Got it.

So it's the "together with" definition.
Strange that "x" can represent together, while the phonetic "ex" means apart.

Boldly going.
I'm not interested in seeing this movie at all. I thought Godzilla vs. Kong was bad, with the only good thing going for it being the battle in the sea. By the trailer, The New Empire looks CGI-heavy, cartoonish and outlandish. This franchise belongs in the same category as Jurassic World and Transformers: fluff that's fun for kids, and that's about it.

Well, it's really ironic - since this movie is being heavily hyped for being in IMAX - that it actually won't be playing on most IMAX screens (at least in my area) because all of the local IMAX theaters will still be showing Dune 2.

I guess that just goes to show that even WB didn't expect the Dune sequel to do so well - now a WB title is keeping another WB title off of IMAX theaters.

They're not just smashing famous monuments

Some movie stars don’t lose their luster. A 90-year-old ape and a 69-year-old reptile are taking over domestic charts this weekend, as Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment‘s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” scored $37 million from 3,861 venues across opening day and preview screenings. It’s an impressive debut that puts the monster-mash well ahead of the pace that was projected earlier this week, which had pegged an opening just north of $50 million.

“The New Empire” cost a substantial sum of $135 million to produce, but it’s getting off on the right, gigantic foot. Reviews have been mediocre — a notch down from the fairly positively received “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021 and way below the euphoric praise that the Japanese production “Godzilla Minus One” earned just three months ago. Nonetheless, audiences aren’t being swayed. The kaiju team-up seems to be playing well to crowds, after earning an “A-” grade from research firm Cinema Score.

Adam Wingard returns to direct “The New Empire” after helming “Godzilla vs. Kong,” with returning cast members including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle alongside franchise newcomers Dan Stevens and Fala Chen. These puny human scientists and fanatics are hopping around the globe as the two eponymous monsters hop out of the Hollow Earth and form a reluctant partnership to take on some equally gigantic, humanity-threatening foes.

Went to see it. It was meh. The last two Legendary Godzillas were better.

The New Empire looks CGI-heavy, cartoonish and outlandish.
I wish it was more cartoonish and outlandish. And of course it's CG-heavy, it's a kaiju movie. CG is the main thing these movies have over the laughable monster suits of yesteryear.
