This one of the films that simply entertains, with fascinating ideas and strong performances. Not a monumental superhero film, but a massively entertaining movie.

59. 2001: A Space Odyssey

A visual masterpiece, I used to consider this to be Kubrick's finest film. Of course, it isn't anymore, but there still is a lot to love about 2001. Absolutely stunning.

58. Kill Bill

This is generally considered to be QT's most violent, action infused film to date. And why not? A fine performance from Uma Thurman, entertaining dialogue and explosive action make this more than worthwhile.

57. Batman Begins

Thanks to Christopher Nolan's direction, brilliant visuals and a solid lead performance from Christian Bale, Batman is finally back into the role of the lead character.

56. Akira

The best Anime film I've ever seen, and I'm not a big fan of the genre.

A haunting, hypnotic war film, full of stunning photography and music, with fine actors delivering strong performances. But ultimately, it's the man at the helm who makes this what it is.

54. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Not a disappointment in my eyes, but rather a fun piece of entertainment that recalls the type of storytelling conveyed in the original Star Wars. Liam Neeson does a solid job in the lead role, and the final lightsaber battle is spectacular.

53. Full Metal Jacket

Kubrick's third best film to date, with a very funny opening 40 minutes that descends into a dramtic finale. Scathing humour and excellent writing are highlights.

52. American Psycho

What could be considered one of the greatest black comedies ever committed to film. Mary Harron's direction and the sharp screenplay are both solid in their own right, but it's Christian Bale's magnificent lead performance as the superficial Patrick Bateman that resonates.

51. JFK

Conspiracy thrillers don't get much better than this, with Kevin Costner and the rest of the cast on fine form and a very interesting storyline, complete with detailed information about the shots heard around the world.

Tarantino's WW2 masterpiece basically re-writes history, as Brad Pitt at his most hilarious leads a team of Jewish American soldiers through France to kill Nazies. A very well-written screenplay and rich performances are definite strong points.

Johnny Depp's performance alone secures this a place in this list.

Excellent camerawork, visual styler and great work from the cast make this much more than a GoodFellas copy. My sixth favourite film from my all time favourite director.

My favourite Bruce Willis actioner has plenty of charisma from it's two leads, some very humourous and foul mouthed dialogue and a great opening song.

I love so many things about this film, from the extraordinary direction and script from Orson Welles, to the brilliant black and white cinematography.

However, it's Welles utterly perfect performance that I love most about this film. Classic.

Scorsese's finest film since Casino, The Departed features outstanding work from it's cast and director and a show stopping ending, but it's Leonardo DiCaprio's career best performance that upstages Jack Nicholson that's most impressive.

44. Twelve Monkeys



Terry Gilliam's sci-fi masterpiece showcases a pair of brilliant performances from Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, my two favourite actors at the moment, and impressive writing and visuals.

43. Superman II



More action-packed than the first, and delves more into the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane. Not to mention three certain Kryptonian supervillians.

42. The Fighter



I used to think his Christian Bale's performance in American Psycho would always be considered his greatest. I was sooooooooo wrong, as Christian Bale delivers the best performance of 2010, and the rest of the cast give their best effort in this remarkable true story.

41. Life Is Beautiful



One of the most beautiful films of all time. Featuring a wonderful performance from Roberto Begnini and superb visuals, Life Is Beautiful is proof that foreign films aren't just fast-talking and subtitles.

This counts for the entire original trilogy. I am a big Star Wars fan, mainly because it captured my attention at a young age and I always wanted to be Han Solo.

My favourite is defintely the dark and compelling The Empire Strikes Back, but the entire original trilogy consists of masterpieces of sci-fi cinema.

38. Reservoir Dogs

This was for a while, my favourite Tarantino film and a fixture in my top ten. Times have changed, but my appreciation for it hasn't lessened. Tarantino's screenplay of mouth watering dialogue is performed perfectly by a great cast, a mesmerising Michael Madsen in particular.

37. Forrest Gump



Tom Hanks' likeable lead performance isn't the only thing to like about this warm, touching film. Some wonderful supporting performances (especially Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan), good pacing and a strong emotional finale. Not sure if it deserved it's Best Picture Oscar, though.

36. The Truman Show



Not fully a comedy, and not quite a drama, The Truman Show still makes for an engrossing watch, if only for the brilliant and unexpected performance from Jim Carrey.

35. Jurassic Park



Eye-popping visuals aren't the only good thing about this film. Spielberg fills the screen with magic and tense direction, as the cast have fun with their performances and the iconic moments keep appearing.

The greatest moment of the film? I cried when the Brachiasaurus was first seen, accompanied by John William's wonderful score. It's definitely in my top 10 favourite scenes of all time.

34. Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom



My favourite Indy film and my second favourite Spielberg film. It has a terrific opening and some great action moments.

33. Schindler's List



Excellent performances and visuals accompany some of Spielberg's most well-directed moments. Brutal and unforgettable.

32. Taxi Driver



Another Scorsese film to make the list. De Niro's most intense performance as Travis Bickle is the finest thing about this NYC odyssey.

31. Magnolia



Paul Thomas Anderson's near masterpiece, with fine performances from his cast, especially Tom Cruise and superb writing, but the most memorable thing about the film for me was the fact it was never boring in it's 181 minute running time.

I felt most sympathetic for the character of Stanley Spector, who never fails to generate emotion from me whenever I hear that line "Dad, you need to be nicer to me".

30. Apocalypse Now



Flawed, but unquestionably deep masterwork from one of America's finest directors. Intense performances spark this odyssey.

29. Chinatown



Marvellously structured film with arguably Jack Nicholson's finest screen performance. This is my second favourite film of the noir genre.

28. Unbreakable



Burce Willis is currently my favourite actor, and this is his greatest performance. Masterfully using restraint and emotion to create a very affecting character, this is Bruce Willis at his finest.

M. Night is a superb storyteller, and next to his other masterpiece, Unbreakable stands as an excellent take on the superhero story.

Both of these films don't come close to their magnificent predecessor, but they are still great in their own right. Well crafted characters and performances and epic battle sequences are the highlights of these two sequels.

Brian De Palma's gangster epic contains one of the greatest shootouts of all time and features Al Pacino's greatest performance.
