I voted for Tom Hanks, but I have to say I also LOVED Hopkins in The Remains of the Day. I just saw Falling Down and I would have nominated him instead of Laurence Fishburne.

The best performance of 1993 was Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List, but my favorite performance of 1993 was Harrison Ford as Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive. (Tommy Lee Jones was better as Deputy Samuel Gerard, but his role was considered a supporting role, not a leading role.)
