What car do you drive / would you like to drive

Tools

Simple enough topic:
  • What car do you drive right now (lease, own, rent...)? Advantages / disadvantages?
  • What car would you like to drive (unlimited budget, what would you buy?)
  • What's the best car you ever had?
I currently drive a black Insignia 2.0 Cosmo edition from work. I've had it for 2 months now and am really pleased with it. It runs very smoothly on the highway. I can adapt the ride to my personal preference, as there's a 'Touring' mode and a 'Sport' model. Fuel consumption is ok; I'm between 10-11 l. right now, which can be expected when driving a 2.0. Very comfortable interior as well, which I really needed because of the long rides I make. One thing that bothers me is that there's literally dozens of buttons in the car, that to me could've been incorporated in the inboard computer. Overall though: good car.

Nice thread. Might be an old one but people change often enough that a new one makes sense every few years.

I drive a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. I bought it used two and a half years ago, just a couple of months before my wedding. Paid for the whole thing in cash upfront, so I've owned it outright from the beginning. I've only owned a few cars, and the other two were ancient, so this is definitely the best.

One of the nice things about used cards is that it sometimes allows you to get something a little tricked out. It's an LX/luxury model, which I'd never buy new, but for a car that's 5 years old and a decent deal otherwise, why not? I almost bought a Honda Accord, but it was older, cost a little more, and the dealer was less willing to come down on price, whereas the guy I brought it from extended the default warranty and knocked off 10%.

I really like it; smooth, comfortable, and most importantly, no major problems in the couple of years I've been driving it. And that's really all I was after, given that my previous car was literally 20 years old (!) by the time I got rid of it, and I'd had a lot of trouble keeping it on the road. True story: when I finally had to ditch the last one, it was because I took it into the mechanic (for the umpteenth time) and he said, among other things: "You can't drive that" and "That car is so messed up." Those are literal quotes.

The mileage on the Sonata is a few MPG below what you'd expect for a 2005 car, but I don't drive a ton, and reliability is far more important to me than almost everything else. It had just 65,000 miles on it, too, which was a big selling point.

If it were a couple of years newer, it'd have an Aux-in, but I can live with a CD player for now. I figure I'll drive it for a few more years and then see where things are, at which point we'll either sell it, or decide to roll with it to something approximating the bitter end. The latter if it stays reliable, most likely.

As for what I'd like to drive...well, I guess if money were no object I'd probably drive an Audi or something. I wouldn't want a crazy sports car or anything. Maybe a BMW or a Jaguar; something really well-built and comfortable. Those have plenty of power, as far as I'm concerned. The moments where I want to really take off are few and far between.

All you really need to know about me and my taste in cars is encapsulated in a micro-story about my friend Adam. He bought a car (a Chevy Cobalt), and it was just two doors, even though he'd ostensibly be driving more than two people around a fair bit. I asked him why he didn't get the four door. To save money, right? He said no, this model cost more, because it had the spoiler and everything on it. I asked him why he would pay more for fewer doors and a spoiler. He said "because it looks sportier." I stared at him like he'd just grown a second head.

Now I drive this Crap because of my injury and I have to do EEG's every year just to drive..

I use to drive

Oh absolutely. The car I had before the Insignia, was a Mercedes B which I bought from their 'Nearly New Car' stock. Cost € 9,000 less than had I bought it new and was a bloody excellent car. No drama, smooth drive, zero technical issues, LOTS of space (more than I have in my current car). My girlfriend drives it now and is loving it too.

I was kinda sad to give it up, because I like it that much. But you know, when the company you work basically says: you can get a company car = car + full insurance + zero costs when in comes to fuel and maintenance. You just can't decline that offer.

A Hilux? Those things are indestructible. Crash it into a tree, reverse and you're on your way again like nothing happened.

It was good for work that's for sure. As some Building sites, the terrain isn't great.

Hey guys,

This is my 1996 EL Fairmont.

I've only owned it 2 months, but I love it.

I know it's getting on in years, but it's something I couldn't have afforded new, and it's got features I've never had before.

It's got Cruise Control, Climate Control, Air Con (that works), and it's just a really nice car to drive.

Before this I drove a:
1984 Holden Commodore VK Berlina (Sedan - Auto)
1981 Maza 626 (Sedan - Manual)
2006 Holden Barina TK (Sedan - Manual)
1996 Ford Fairmont EL (Sedan - Auto)

You could have some fun in the Barina, but it was a very poorly built car. My current is my favorite, and wouldn't trade it for any of the other cars I've had.

Just another movie Guru
MAN I AM A BALLER!

I usually drive an 02 Escort ZX2, or my 2011 Yamaha Stryker. I'd prefer to be on my motorcycle than my car anyday.

I have a 1999 Fiat Seicento Young

Advantages:
- It's cheap to run, doesn't burn much fuel, spare parts are dirt cheap (if you compare them to spare parts of other cars that is)
- It's a pretty car. Not astonishingly beautiful, but pretty nonetheless.
- It was built in polish factories only, which means that it's at least polish in some way even though the company is italian.
- it's very easy to park and as you go along you get the great bonus of being able to laugh at the guys in their huge and expensive SUV's because you can drive in easily where they just won't fit.
- It has a nice engine sound.

Disadvantages:
- It's not exactly the most reliable car in the world (but it will never leave you in the middle of the road with smoke coming from under the bonnet. Usually the biggest problems you get with this car, if you don't drive it like a yobo, are brakes getting rusty and therefore not working well)
- The pedals are just a tiny bit too high up which you're gonna feel after a longer drive.
- It's a bit slow (but still enough for your daily town runs, for which the car was designed)
- It doesn't have an aircon (there was a version with one but it was built in later years)

Things that don't really fit on either list:

- It may not be reliable but that's why it has a soul! It makes a slightly different noise every day, depending on the weather and the time of year. I love that about it.
- It's a very happy car. It only has a tiny engine with 42 BHP (or at least it had 42 when it was new in 1999) but when you put your foot down in the first three gears, the acceleration is quite decent and you can just feel that it wants to be driven, it wants to get you to your destination and put a smile on your face.
- It doesn't have power steering (again, later models came with power steering but I have the first version of the car. Which is also the poorest as far as equipment goes) which I didn't put on the disadvantages list because I actually prefer it that way. It gives me a better "feel" of the car I just didn't get in the Clio I was learning to drive in (which did have power steering). Also it's one thing less to go wrong in a few years.

I have absolutely no idea what I would buy if I had unlimited budget. Probably a Noble because Nobles are simple, fast and have a certain charm that super-advanced supercars just don't have. Or maybe a hot hatchback... I'm yet to find out what I like the most when I get to drive some more cars. The Fiat is my first car so far.

If I had an unlimited budget, I'd probably go for one of these:

The Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake

Ridiculous car, very extravagant in the way it looks, but an epic tourer if I'm to believe my Merc dealer. Very powerful, spacious, very comfortable, lots and lots of options, great ride.

The Maserati Quattroporte

Absolutely the best looking car Maserati has ever made; maybe even the best looking car I've ever seen. The interior is also a great example of less being more. It's incredibly elegant and classy. A restaurant keeper I know leases one of these and told me it's a great car, but fuel consumption is murderous.

Range Rover

Honestly, not just the best 4x4, it's just the best car in the world I reckon. A stunning vehicule, in terms of technicalities, comfort, space, looks. I'd probably get this one over the aforementioned 2.

If only If had the money I would buy this beauty.
Dodge Charger 1970

You ready? You look ready.
My newly purchased used car is a 1990 Toyota Camry, and I love it. Fuel efficiency, baby! My little go-mobile, and it's very bland, which is good if you wanna avoid the popo.

If money was no option I'd get a Cadillac CTS-V Coupe. Soooo sexy.

Never should have traded that Camry to the dealer (they gave me $500). I was just mad that things broke three months in a row, and that’s what got me at the dealership buying a ****ing FRS 2 months after a bankruptcy: ‘Merica

And then going from the FRS to the B2300. Holy shit, that was jarring. Now that I’m back in a vehicle with power steering I feel like I can conquer the world.

The drive home in the Mazda 3 was fantastic. Solid acceleration, the clutch feels amazing, but the shifter is ass. Redlines around 6k but I barely got over 4k, and it still kept a decent pace riding the tailwind of a Si.

You ready? You look ready.
So right now I’m looking at needing to replace struts/shocks (hoping just the rears, but will probably replace them all), dash lights are ****ed so I can’t see my speed at night, AC system either needs a recharge or the compressor is shot, and gotta figure out why it is running lean but that could be any of half a dozen things (bad O2 sensor, bad MAF sensor, vacuum leak, intake issue, or fuel system). Of course, I don’t know **** all about any of it, so I’ve gotta enlist some friends. Otherwise labor alone is gonna bankrupt me.

So expect more photos when we start cranking wrenches.

Thankfully, the clutch feels brand new, and the transmission is smooth, so small blessings. But I really need to upgrade the shifter assembly.

You ready? You look ready.
so i’ve cracked under the stress of undertaking a transmission swap in the B2300. i was finding i needed more tools than i had on hand and doing it without power tools was gonna suck.

and whoever designed the mazda 3 hated mechanics. i’m going to save a lot of money in labor doing it myself but holy ****. the hours.

68 Mustang or any mustang from the 60's but, more practical and realistic, i hope to get an hyundai ioniq as it looks like a modern day back to the future car.

That elusive hide-and-seek cow is at it again
*cough-cough*
So much DUST on this thread!

I drive a 2010 Ford F150. I would love to drive a Jeep Rubicon Unlimited. Probably that v8 engine would be neat.
