Police Officer In Helicopter Takes Atomic Bomb Out To Sea To Explode

Hi All:

There was a film that was a drama, possibly made in the 1960's, that ended with a police officer flying a helicopter that had a nuclear bomb in tow. He presumably sacrifices his life by flying the bomb out to sea (I would imagine that bomb had a timing device and was set to explode.)

I remember seeing this film as a kid and it scared the wits out of me. Would anyone know what film this was?
